[IMG] One of a bunch of singles I grabbed last time I was at the liquor store. Only thing in the fridge that qualifies for this thread. It won't be the last beer I drink today.

Over 760 beer reviews and I'm just now getting to this. A classic skunk bomb. I swear to the beer gods I will never buy a green bottled beer again.

Ah, yes. I forgot to mention the reason why I wanted to have these side by side. It was not to compare them as similar beers because they are quite different from one another. The only similarity they might have is the 11% ABV and the fact that they are brewed by Deschutes. You are right on the barreling aspect, as far as I am concerned Black Butte XXIV did not spend time in any type of barrel. These are two of my all time favorite seasonal releases, and they happen to come from the same brewery, so the reason I wanted to compare these is to see which of these aged better according to my palate. I remember what they taste like fresh as well as aged but I wanted to see which I would enjoy more with a couple of years of age on it. I often crack open an abyss and think, wow, what an awesome beer, same with a BB. I had multiple 2012 bottles of Abyss as well as two bottles of BB XXIV left so I decided to compare and see which I preferred. I wanted nothing to muddle my taste buds so I drank about 8 good OZ's of these beers before I lit up my cigar. I wanted to see how they paired with it. I got into cigars about 5 years before I got into craft beer. Before discovering good beer my best Cigar beer paring was a Negra Modelo and an Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story, the cigar is not a photo prop. Throughout my experience of drinking these beers I found BB XXIV to be the better beer. It was overall very well rounded!! One thing I did notice was that the Abyss felt a lot older than it was. They were both released in 2012 and I am sure that BB was brewed way before abyss but it tasted a lot more fresh than Abyss. Perhaps I got a bottle that was not very good, perhaps it had a bad cap. I am not sure. I am just glad I had these side by side and I look forward to comparing other vintages in the future.
    Cheers.

Robinson's Old Tom. Great beer I've not had for a while. Stuff like this is kind of the British version of a German doppelbock.
