Now if someone would produce a study that showed that bacon was good for you...

Thanks to @draheim! I did some volunteer work today at a fund-raiser for a local charity http://www.maxhigbee.org/ that supplies recreational opportunities for developmentally challenged teens and adults today. Yup, I worked the beer garden at at Baconfest. Yes, I had a Scotch Ale that was infused with bourbon-soaked bacon, and served through a Randall filled with Centennial hops and full strips of bacon. I hearby dare anybody to refute the powers of bacon and beer. Especially when combined.

I'm impressed. In your second sentence, you almost made it sound like you're a good person.

Alcohol is a solvent. Solvents clean things. By the transitive property, alcohol keeps yer guts clean.

Much e-ink has been spilled over this. http://www.beeradvocate.com/communi...ng-boosts-health-and-reduces-diseases.179921/ and some other threads I can no longer find.

That said, this psmag article is by a large margin the worst piece of writing I've ever seen on the topic. Dear god this makes my blood boil:
This is ludicrous. Teetotalism doesn't cause heart disease any more than abstinence from coffee causes diabetes. Add to it that all of the researchers who've studied this universally conclude that the impact is not yet well understood enough to actually recommend teetotalers should start drinking. Who cares what they think, right? Clearly this author understands their work better than they do!

Weeee, let's free associate causation and causality. Do Liberians drink as much as we do? Maybe teetotalism causes ebola.
    Hooray for anecdata!
Let's be very clear about what binge drinking is. Binge drinking is not 10 drinks. Binge drinking is drinking to the point of drunkenness. If you are drunk, the alcohol is doing more harm to you than good.

There was a thread a couple months ago about a study that shows moderate alcohol consumption increases your HDL levels.

I'd love to believe this were true but this article's tone doesn't do much to instill confidence. The tone seems less scientific and more indignant.

Alcohol kills germs. It cleanses. It's natural and it's wholsome and it often tastes damn good.

I have always thought it was ok as long as you did not do it to excess. I mean a couple of beers sure makes you feel happy and that 's the part that is good for you. Plus you will be more social and when you are happy with other people you feel calm and secure.

the bottom line is that anything in excess is bad for you. Moderate daily consumption (of anything) is better than gorging once a week.

The other take-away from this article, which should be obvious to anyone with a functional brain, is that the USA's attitude to alcohol is driven by politics and leftover lies from Prohibition rather than science. But why should alcohol be different from any other subject, right

I read an article in Mens Health, moderate consumption is good for you, it lowers your LDL's bad cholesterol and improves your overall HDL/LDL ratio. Moderate for that study averaged about 2 beers a day.

Well then, were all even luckier than we though. We get to enjoy good beer and stay healthy because of it :sunglasses:
