I have learned to embrace this new rating system and have thus rated my first beer with more than just a number. I used words. oh you devil dancer.

I'm on the fence about whether I will continue to post reviews to BA or not. This move was extremely disappointing. Even more disappointing when we were not notified of this change well in advance so we could record our category scores separately.

This idea that has obviously popped up several times at least in this thread seems like such a sensical middle ground, and I think if THIS had been the beef of the update instead of (arbitrarily, imo) REMOVING the old version in favour of this new slimmed down quick fix version, I think most people would be fine with it. The ship's already sailed on having ticks be incorporated with the 'hads,' so why not just introduce a 'note' feature to that instead of forcing everyone into the simpler model?

Basically, I don't have anything super new to add to the quoted ideas, just wanted to lend my voice to the chorus promoting reasonable compromise.

This may be the single greatest thing to ever come from this website.

My advice, is ALWAYS use the "Precise" score when you start to do a review. Then the review box shows up BEFORE the review is posted. Then as you taste and type, you can CHANGE your number to something you like better. Then you click on the REVIEW button and see what you've done.

I don't personally think I can survive this change with any passion as for reviews. Over 6 years there have been changes in weight and changes in words. I prefer continuity albeit in an everchanging realm I understand these adaptations. I saw the addition of 'ratings' as a devaluation of the concept but at least I could opt out of viewing them, even if they were part of the overall score. This change is crippling and will shortly end thoughtful reviews in lieu of a multitude of ticks. I won't be playing that game as I am obviously no longer the target audience.

Not much to add other than putting a tick in the disappointed column.

Thank you for taking the comments into consideration. I am glad you are at least re-enabling the beer review categories.

Since you did not mention a planned reversal to the minimum 5 character review length: could you please at least state a standard for what these "short reviews" should or should not contain in order to be deemed appropriate / inappropriate? Thanks.

Good point, however, we'll need to clarify this in general. "Short" reviews shouldn't be targeted. I'll add it to our list.

Agreed that reviews of any length should meet the same standard.

I agree with @rudzud as well- we greatly appreciate your consideration of user feedback. Points 2-4 are especially important to me.

Excellent. I think keeping the stuff we want as optional while foregrounding the changes you found necessary should make almost everyone happy. At least I'm 100% satisfied with it.

As long as we can post and display old style reviews, I don't care if the pages fill up with "ratings". Great compromise :grinning: thanks

I hope that the reviews that some of us have done since the new rating system was implemented won't be lost with the reintegration of the categories and whatnot down the road.

Yes, those numbers weren't removed from the database.
I'm not sure where you got this idea, but there's no reason to worry about that.

Thanks Todd as this will ease big time a lot of folks
    but I have to ask

what is your reply to so many folks who don't want to see the word count dropped to near zero in a review
anyone who writes a review on your site only wants to see reviews, real reviews, I know you understand this
now however you've allowed hads with a trivial amount of letters to become equal to reviews in that I can't filter them out
up/down voting is zero cure, the true reviews will be buried in noise
if there is a business reason that makes this an improvement, I hope you can tell me
as mentioned above, a comment option for hads solves everything
    cheers

Simply put: The site is much bigger than it was years ago. We need to cater to most vs some. And I think the new rating system + updates based on feedback will create an incredibly flexible system that achieves that. (Of course we'll never please everyone, but we can do our best to please most.) And the voting system is in its infancy. The more people use it, and the more we improve it, the more powerful it'll become.

Very happy to see categories coming back! I am probably not alone when I say that their elimination virtually eliminated much of my enthusiasm for reviewing. Thank you for listening.

I agree that including many optional fields is the right way to move forward. With the wide variety of users on BA, the more options people have, the better. I can be as detailed as I want while someone else as efficient as they want and we're both happy to come back the next day.

    Cheers,
    Jeff
