We're going to try Stu Stuart's Bamberg tour once again in June. http://bambergbeerme.com/ While I can plan a trip on my own, my wife and I think doing the Bierkellers with a small group would be more fun than with just us. Anyone want to join us?

    Current itinerary is:

June 3 - Arrive Frankfort - See below
    June 4-11 Bamberg Tour
    June 11 - Ausfeß
June 12-14 (or 15) Regensburg - Anybody want to meet for a bier or two?
    June 14-17 Salzburg
    June 18 - Depart München

We have 5 nights between Regensburg/Salzburg. We just have to decide how to split them up.

June 3 - We're trying to figure out what to do on June 3 (besides a good nap). Originally, we were going to fly into Nürnberg and spend the night there, but that's out although spending the night there is still a possibility. Another possibility is going back to Miltenberg but something must be going on there that day because hotel rooms are limited. I thought about Düsseldorf, but the train ride from there to Bamberg is a bit longer than I want to do June 4. We could just go to Bamberg early and bike out to Hummel.

Anyhow, I'm looking for suggestions for the afternoon/evening of June 3. I'd like it to be 3 hours or less from Bamberg by train and accessible from Frankfort by train. Any ideas?

    Danke.

You'll be in FFM, so go to Braustil with me for a few hours, then you can be on your way.

Can you do that on a Wednesday afternoon?

Almost a year from now? I think I can clear my schedule that far out in advance. I'll make a point of doing it. My question is... won't y'all be too tired after the flight to do anything but crash on the day of your arrival? Arriving at 8 or 10 am is a killer for us always... usually need a 3 hour nap just to make it through the day. Melatonin helps, but that first day is hard.

Don't forget some yummy Apfelwein. I always took guests to Wagner in Sachsenhausen. I know it's touristy, but there are still lots of local hanging out there too. Otherwise, Kanonensteppel & Germania were my standard go-to.

I wasn't actually asking for a commitment, just if you're generally available on a Wednesday afternoon. Although I would like to meet up with you (and Lucky) if it works out.

Yeah, we'll probably be tired. That's why I mentioned a good nap. The last time we made it through lunch before we could nap. I can't expect to be able to check into a hotel before 3 so we just have to press on.. After that long trip, we'll probably be ready for a beer.

You can do Regensburg proper in one day. It's "only" 5 places that brew here.
For a second day I'd head out North-West (82 km round trip) for Prösselbräu Adlersberg + Schloßbrauerei Eichhofen + Brauerei Goß (Deuerling) + Brauerei Plank (Laaber) + Brauerei Luber (Kallmünz). http://goo.gl/maps/YsHnz
3rd day I'd head out South-West (87 km round trip) into nearby Kelheim county where Brauerei Riemhofer and the Riedenburger Brauhaus beckon. Make your way back through the Altmühl Valley and hit Schneider Essing, Frischeisen Affecking and Oberndorf. http://goo.gl/maps/ZB6PV
I also have similar routes for 3 more days without ever leaving a 30 mile circle around Regensburg and without repeating a single brewery.

Thanks for the suggestions. I wasn't planning on renting a car while we were in Regensburg but it's an option. We've pretty much tried to avoid drinking and driving while in Germany.

Are there any close enough that we could visit several by bicycle on a 30km or so trip?

Frankfurt Hbf to Miltenberg is about 1:30 with one change. Miltenberg to Bamberg is right around 3:00, although that includes two exchanges of about 14 minutes each. But if you could hook up with Boddhitree in Frankfurt then that's my recommendation.

Miltenberg is probably our first choice right now, if I can find a suitable room.

I was just wondering if there were options a tourist wouldn't normally be aware of.

Bikers... Oh dear oh dear... :stuck_out_tongue:

In that case Day 1 (= Downtown Regensburg) remains the same while for day 2 you skip Brauerei Luber in Kallmünz (which is too far out to be conveniently reached by public transportation) and take the Agilis train out to Laaber. You can take your bikes on the train for 5 EUR and since the regular ticket already costs 4.60 EUR that's basically nothing. Then, you bike back along this route http://goo.gl/maps/SMk0u and still get to hit Plank, Goß, Eichhofen and Adlersberg.

For day 3 I'd take the same Agilis train out to Abensberg (Kuchlbauer, Ottenbräu and Hofbräu), then bike to Weltenburg, take the ship to Kelheim, then go by the Frischeisen in Affecking. If you're up to it, bike down the Donau valley to Bad Abbach and then hit the Bergkammer in Oberndorf, otherwise you can hop back on the Agilis train in Saal and take that to Poikam which is across the Donau from Bad Abbach and Oberndorf (location of Bergkammer). From there you can either bike back into Regensburg or hop on the train again in Poikam. Those train tickets are day tickets so you already paid for it on your first ride. The ride on the ship one way from Weltenburg back to Kelheim will cost you 5.40 EUR plus an additional 2.50 for the bike per person. Your route would be like this: http://goo.gl/maps/CXV8o

    Happy now ?

    Miltenberg hotel recommendation:

    Schmuckkästchen
    http://www.hotel-schmuckkaestchen.de

Cool place, best location, delishious breakfast (make sure to include it). We usually book the big suite with the turret window sitting room, but the regular rooms are great also.

We usually book thru Hotels.com or Booking.com which ever has the best rates.

I use Hotels.com for Euro hotels, too. We found some great B&Bs that weren't on the list of any hotel chains with that site... and after 10 night stays, you get a free night. I used that free night in Mü. for BrauKunstLive earlier this spring. It was a 4+ star hotel, too. Hotels.com has a phone number to a Berlin site where I was able to change bookings seamlessly.

https://www.bedandbreakfast.eu is a site that looks interesting, though haven't used it, yet.

Also... for anyone else looking to book a room in a Private Gasthof/Brewery, here is the site:
http://www.braugasthoefe.de/en/ Some of which are near Regensburg, such as Prösselbrau in Adlersburg.

Since @Stahlsturm gave such a great itinerary for the Regensburg area, I thought I'd add use this thread to give more tourie info.

Also, in Miltenberg, you can stay at zum Riesen, the oldest Gasthaus in all of Germany. Here's the thread where we discussed it.

    Thanks for the great information.

The advantage to bikes is we burn more calories so we can drink more beer!

They were listed on Booking.com and wanted €999! Just a bit out of our price range! But thanks anyway for the recommendation.

I will contact zum Riesen to see if they have anything available.

The last time we were there, we stayed at the Hopfgarten, which had a great breakfast with many local items. Unfortunately, they are sold out for that night.

That's really bizarre - we spent less than 130€/night back in Apr.

As I mentioned, there must be something going on that week. Only two places that are actually in Miltenberg even show up on Booking.com or Hotels.com.

One more question (for now ), I'm coming up with 7 breweries in Regensburg. Kneitinger, Spital, Bischofshof, Weizenbrauhaus, Fürstliches, Albrecht and Thurn und Taxis. Are a two of these closed?

    Danke.

Not Weizen but Weisses = former Joh. Albrecht. Fürstliches = Thurn und Taxis.
