I'm sure this has been hashed over numerous times, but I wanted to comment on something I saw today that ticked me off.

A local shop sent out an email today that they received 12 bottles each of Stone 18th Anniversary and Stone Mocha Stout.

This place will hold beers, so I emailed back and asked them to hold 1 of each for me. I went after work to pick them up and saw behind the counter that one guy had reserved 10 bottles of the Mocha Stout and 5 of the 18th!

I think there are two problems here. One, the shop apparently doesn't have a bottle limit policy. Two, the jerk who hogs a huge portion of the beer for himself.

I know there are people that will say he's "entitled" since there was no limit but I'm of the opinion that this is just greedy and prevents a lot of other people for having the chance to try the beer.

As far as I'm concerned, it's not in the spirit of craft beer.

    Thoughts?

Just rude behavior by hoarders and bad management by store to reserve majority of limited bottles forgone person, especially after they sent out an email.

The shop should say no when somebody asks them to hold most of their supply. The guy is greedy.

Is this at a Hyvee? I can understand holding a few bottles, but 10 of something is ridiculous if it's a more limited item. If it was TG stuff, they'd get their account dropped. Unfortunately, Stone is way bigger so not sure how much they'd care or not, idk.

And you have stone Mocha stout already where you're at? I think Des Moines area is getting it next week. I know distro times vary in the state depending on the distributor.

Yes, it's a HyVee. Eastern Iowa. Other HyVee's in town seem to enforce bottle limits for limited releases, but this location doesn't seem to do that. I emailed the wine and spirits manager and politely gave him my opinion on the matter.

I think the bottle shop should limit the sale of these types of beers. Not so sure I can put a lot of blame on the guy who asks for a bunch of beer.

I guess I can blame the guy. If you know there are only 12 of a beer available and you take 10 of them, how can you think this is the right thing to do? Just because someone allows it, should you? Perhaps I'm too "Iowa Nice" but it's a crap move as far as I'm concerned.

It's definitely a crap move. Kind of sounds like he just reserved every bottle that wasn't spoken for.

I'm going to give the guy the benefit of the doubt and assume he just got excited and called the store and asked to reserve as many as he could and the store proceeded to reserve their entire allotment for him. A better store would have told the guy, "we only have 12 of each, I'll hold 1 of each for you."

But the guy should know he's being greedy

Store owners/ operators don't always realize the demand or rarity of theses beers. They probably don't want to turn away gauranteed business. When a store owner needs to pay bills it's hard to turn down $$$ especially when there's technically no guarantee that the bottles won't sit on the shelves. Probably a byproduct of the recession.

When a store owner knows enough to send out emails about his rare beer, it's safe to assume he knows what he has

At my store, I send out a weekly email of all new beer and limit them to one each according to first to respond. If there are still some left over then I go back through the list from the beginning. There are all sorts of different ways to do it, but I think this is the most fair and it rewards those that are loyal to our store.

I didn't like the "limit" when i experienced it at first, but now I appreciate how it does really help spread the love to others. I'm all for it now.

I suspected so, I've heard of a couple Hyvees in Eastern Iowa that don't use bottle limits. I think you did the right thing in emailing the wine and spirits manager. All the ones here in Des Moines area (that I know at least) are great people and value their customer's input.

Yeah for sure, the craft store I go to puts their rarer more sought after beers arrival on Facebook. If more people show up than bottles at the time of stocking then they do a lottery. They got 12 Stickee monkees, and sold out in 30 min. 1 bottle limit.

Store owners get limited allotments, and should treat them as such. I live in a busy city with limited availability of rarities due to ABV caps. It's a free for all on release days. Every store around me enforces some type of limit.
