I thought this was a great release, putting peoples' names on a list to keep a one bottle limit allowed more people to get it. I live an hour away and I found out about it rather late. Wasn't sure if I'd get there in time and if I didn't, I drink fresh Sue on tap.

You can't so they don't listen to the fans opinions. They have really been trying to get things right with the limited releases this year.

Just like with any limited release beer (or any limited product for that matter) people are going to bitch. Can't make everybody happy. Time to move on. Its only beer and there are probably 100 other great options sitting on the shelves of your local shop

I like the way it was done personally, even though I wasn't able to go get any.

Naw, I was just teasing. I've got no skin in the game, I just noticed a few Iowans liking the fact that some really good beer stayed in their state. Kind of like how we here in Minnesota will stand behind any Surly distribution model that does not involve Darkness being delivered to Chicago. Or something like that.
For the record, I like the idea of bottling the beer and putting it on the shelf better than having a carnival around it.

Chicago is paying for that fancy new brewery you're getting.

Hmmm...I think the $20 million from J Bros would help personally.

I don't see myself just happening to travel to TG on a release day, or spending $200+ on some cellar selling site or trade several large limited bottles for one 12 oz... so I have accepted the fact I'll have to get lucky at a bottle share someday and receive a 3/4 oz pour.

Was in Georgia all week and my Aunt who lives in Des Moines randomly texts me and asks "Hey we're in Decorah, where is that Toppling Goliath place you're always telling us to go to?" So I tell her and ask what they have, two hours later I see her response and that there are KB bottles. Her and my uncle who have never ever been to TG just happened to go when it was released and just happened to get the last two bottles. I think I better make a trip to their place and convince them to share a pour with their favorite nephew.

The trades and auctions for KBBS are so disappointing. One of those could have gone into the hands of regular TG supporters that have difficulty getting anything. Heck, I have yet to have managed to get any of the special releases. Hopefully someday I'll get to try KBBS/MD/King/Assassin.

Regardless though, a silent release eliminates all the other nonsense that surrounds a ticketed or advance announcement release. Now all you have are people that didn't get anything which you're going to have anyway. Main argument about a silent release is they need advance notice to travel to Decorah. And it's not even a good one since it indirectly is saying the locals and frequent visitors are being rewarded.

The problem with living in iowa is that it's hard to find beer to trade that other people are actually looking for. We get a few releases seasonally from breweries outside of iowa that can trade but TG is always guaranteed to be sought after. Unfortunately, there isn't as much supply (yet) as there is demand from people buying to drink for themselves or to trade. I'd imagine if trading didn't exist, there wouldn't be needs for limits, truck chasers, whatever. I'd imagine other areas have the same situation, like I am guessing people wouldn't buy cases at a time of Heady and causing it to sell out quickly as well. So iowa traders are left with little choices for beer, and couple that with people offering absurd amounts of beer for a 12oz bottle that US IOWANS create the hype for, that's how it gets to the hands of someone who may not necessary be a "local supporter." It sucks, yes but what can ya do?

What exists is a segmented beer community leaning more towards the lion head mounted on the wall and not the meat on the bone. Hunt the beer with perceived cunning tactics, snap photos quickly to feather the cap and show dominance, sell to the highest bidder to complete the transaction. The enjoyment is in the catch and then mirrored by the pay up from a not so avid hunter. Cabbage Patch Dolls that someone will eventually catch a buzz off of. We are no longer tasters of pleasure, but purchasers of blood diamonds that grew naturally with good intentions until we got our stinking greedy human hands on it.

I've said this a million times. I've landed mid level whales $4$ countless times. If you want to go baller and land white whales, open your damn checkbook and go to the auction sites. Trading for them is just silly.

That will fade. 'The hunt' can be addicting when you first get into craft beer. But eventually you learn there is more enjoyment from the drinking and sharing of it in good company. I believe you are seeing this when guys post 'cellar cleaning', trading and selling off all those bottles that only a few years ago they worked so hard to get. I've seen more than a few die-hards burn out recently. So pace yourselves, young BA's.
