Hey everyone, this is a weird first post, but I wanted to ask about this. I was enjoying a Bell's Java Stout when I noticed something floating at the top. I pulled it out and it appeared to be a long, thick mucus-like substance. Like a slug. It looked like a tan slug, made out of stout. Needless to say, I threw up in my mouth a little. Currently the tulip glass of Bell's is perched next to the sink as I can't quite bring myself to pour it out.

Anyone know what that was? I heard it was just yeast but I want to be sure.

    Thanks!

Seriously, have we really come full circle with this, and now completely rehashing old threads on purpose. Just substituting one brewery for another?

I concur. But we'll indulge the OP. Most likely these are just coagulated proteins--completely harmless and quite common.

Please do a search if you want to know more. I believe the last time we discussed this issue, it was about Founder's Old Curmudgeon.

It happens occasionally. It's not a slug unless you let the beer sit out open and where the slugs could be attracted to it and crawl in and drown. Fish it out with a spoon and throw it away. Looks worse than it is and it's safe to drink the beer. Remember there's germ killing alcohol in there.

Yeah, proteins are what I was thinking as well, but I forgot about the Founder's thread. I was thinking about the Sierra Nevada thread from several years back

Or buy Lupulin Maximus by O'So Brewing Company. Worst thing you get there is a hop cone.

Drank an 11 big sound the other day and there was a lot of this stuff. Poured it off and enjoyed the hell out of what remained.

I was served a Bells Two Hearted Ale a few years ago, that had a white cloudy thingy floating in it, looked like someone jizzed in the beer. I asked for another and the bartender just shrugged and tossed it. Never seen anything like it before or since.

You have a beer that is unfiltered and proud of it. Do the math.

Arrghhhh...I too thought it was a slug and so I ate mine. (In bottle food pairing examples?) Now I find out it's nasty yeast coagulation? That's nasty. Damn!

swirl the beer before you pour. its like yeast and proteins, etc. if the cap is tight, pour it in the dark and drink faster. lol:grinning::grinning::grimacing:

You know we get new members every now and again, new to craft drinking, who can't be bothered to spend 20 minutes to search the entire database before making a new post (and shouldn't be expected to), right?

Maybe Bell's recently hired a former tequila maker who was confused? Drink the worm!

Not to mention that if I used the search function to try to find information about this, I can about guarantee I would fail to find the relavent post. Not bashing on the search function - I just would have no idea what search terms to use.

I used the search function and its hit or miss, works great on finding beer, sucks if your not an expert in the BA web site search secrets. meaning I can find beer, but I was searching for porter posts by Ron @patto1ro (expert on Porter bar none) to loop the same old porter vs stout question but I failed.
