Don't worry, it's not one of those "how could anyone not like IPAs?" or "why don't I like IPAs?" threads. This is much more specific. Maybe you BAs will be able to help me out.

True, I am no IPA lover, but there are definitely several that I like. I've had most of what would be considered the best IPAs in the world, and there are some that I really like and others that I really don't. I was hoping that if I listed the ones I liked and the ones I didn't like, that you would be able to recommend which others I should try and which I should avoid, and what the ones I like/don't like have in common. My palate may have changed a bit over the past couple of years, so there might be an inconsistency or two, but I did my best. Thanks!

Looks like you like Citra hops but not Simcoe hops.

I'm jealous since I have not had a chance to try out many of those you've listed.

Have you tried Sixpoint Resin or CCB Jai Alai, and if so, did you enjoy them or not? I only ask to help with recommendations.

Maine Lunch tastes incredibly similar to Heady Topper in my opinion.

also.. I have not tried these but they have been heavily recommended to me on multiple occasions and are more local to you than me. I'll have to wait until Oct to try these.

Other Half Brewing - All Green Everything, Hop Showers, Green Diamonds.

Yeah, I had a feeling about that, but I wasn't sure. I'm still not able to identify the different hops. At this point I'm still like "this is hoppy," or "this is not hoppy."

Yes, I've had both several times. Both are closer to "like" than not.

I just had All Green Everything for the first time last week. It was good. Not on the level of the ones I mentioned, but definitely good.

Is there a way to get a list of the all- or mostly-Citra hopped IPAs?

I'm so glad you posted this Craftfan as I've wondered the same thing about my tastes, which sometimes seem disturbingly random. And thanks to the people who singled out a potential hop difference, which is what I assumed is largely behind my preferences but isn't always the easiest variable to research and isolate across individual beers.

If I could piggyback on your question, I tend to like citrus/tropical hop flavors better than piney/resiny ones. Is there a clear cut hop distinction regarding those profiles? Or are those flavors more the result of various combinations of hops and not so much from singular contributions?

As for a rec, at least based on your "like" list I'd second Jai Alai.

I don't really have a list, but if you like citra, you should seek out PseudoSue. There is no better citra beer in my opinion.

Citra has been gaining in popularity as well. Kern River Citra is probably the best I have ever had. Hoping they will be at the SF Beer Week Double IPA fest again.

I could recommend Two IPAs off the top of my head, that you might like. White Rajah and Maine's Another One.

    All of them!

Edit: Even the Earthy/Onion/Garlic hops also apply.

Had them both. I thought they were alright.

ISO? Been trying to work a trade for Assassin and/or KBBS, but the asking prices have been on a different planet. Thought I had the ammunition this time around, but boy was I wrong. I figure if I could trade for those then adding on the Sues of the world would be the next step.

I'll be sure to check these out.

    Yes, ISO.

Interesting with the Double Sunshine which is widely believed to only use Citra hops.

I didn't "hate" Double Sunshine, but it definitely didn't live up to the hype for me. I certainly don't know the recipe, but it wasn't the hop flavors I found disagreeable. I just found it to be very spicy; I prefer my IPAs cleaner like Pliny or Sucks.

A lot of the beers he has on his "liked" list use Simcoe hops, and not many of them use Citra.

Thanks for the links Azorie, though those mostly line up with my existing level of knowledge or lack thereof (and I should have specified that I was specifically referring to differences within IPAs. I'm pretty clear on my malty vs. hoppy beer preferences). Looking at those sorts of hop lists generally just makes me feel more confused since half of the descriptions seem a a bit contradictory (X is a citrusy with grapefruit notes and pine, Y is piney with citrus notes and grapefruit).

I guess in my ideal fantasy world what I'd want to see is some sort of spreadsheet of which hops are used in which IPAs, so you could dig in and determine the degree to which the presence of certain hops or combinations thereof correlate with one's preferences. I suppose that brewers are understandably not always that interested in being completely transparent about what's in their recipe though.
