When shopping, I sometimes quantify a value bypassing taste and smell. Here is my formula...

    price / (oz * abv)

This gives me a price per alcohol unit. Now...I've read that 2, 12oz bottles of 5% beer do not actually equal 1, 12oz 10% bottle, but this is the closest I can come to quantify value per alcohol unit. So...some real world examples:

    • 1, Case of Stone IPA = $26.99 (Costco) / ( (24*12) * 6.9) = 1.4 cents per alcohol unit
    • 1, Case of SN Pale Ale = $23.99 (Costco) / ( (24*12) * 5.6) = 1.5 cents per alcohol unit
    • 1, bomber of Hop Stoopid = $3.74 (Costco) / (22oz * 8.0) = 2.1 cents per AU
    • 1, bomber of Stone Enjoy By = $5.75 (Costco) / (22oz * 9.4abv) = 2.8 cents per AU
    • 1, 750ml of Alesmith Speedway Stout = $10.99 / (25.3 * 12.0) = 3.6 cents per AU
    • 1, 500ml of Pliney The Elder = $6.50 / (16.9 * 8.0) = 4.4 cents per AU
    • 1, Growler of local IPA = $20 / (64 * 6.8) = 4.6 cents per AU
    • 1, 750ml of Black Tuesday = $30 / (25.3 * 19.0) = 6.2 cents per AU

The cheapest I've calculated thus far is a case of Stone IPA from Costco at 1.4 cents per alcohol unit. With that being said, I would have no problem buying a case of Hop Stoopid bombers from Costco either because 2.1 cents per AU is really good. I don't think I can come to grips on buying a case of Enjoy By though.

Again, this formula is strictly based on monetary value. I'd much rather drink Enjoy By more that Stone IPA, but that would get expensive.

So what are some of the best beer values you guys get using my formula?

Torpedo probably trumps most in this category...also tastes so bomb for the price

It might be interesting to make this calculation relative to the BA score. In terms of value I'd put more weight on taste, smell, and even appearance than ABV. The same notion exist though, as there are beers that offer more per dollar than others.

I'd rather figure out a way to get drinking pleasure per cents/ounce than abv.

For my $$ it's Bell's Two Hearted. If my math is correct according to your formula it's 1.7 cents per alcohol unit. Four pack of 16 oz. cans go for $8 here.

I think you'd have to figure it with price vs. BA rating. That would get you a quality value.

This is probably true, but I've never seen any of the local Costcos in Orange County selling Torpedo. I'm guessing it would fall right in the area of 1.2 cents per AU.

I don't get that involved with it but I can get a case of (24) 12 ounce bottles of Bells Two Hearted for about $43 at Binny's v a case of (24) 16 ounce cans for about $46. So for a mere $3 additional I can have 96 ounces more, the equivalent of 8 12 ounce servings.

I think your formula is broken.

That would be nice. You take a quiz of 20 questions to map your flavor profile, then the service takes the BA scores and descriptions and finds the one with the highest matches according to your profile. Then divide by $ per oz.

Maybe my math is not right but this seems like a good value:
    4 pack Sierra Nevada Hoptimum @ $9.99 / (48 * 10.4) = 2 cents per AU.

    Check my math:
    15 pk of 12oz cans of All Day @ 4.7 ABV @ $15.99 = 1.89 cents per AU???
