Upon arriving at my destination for the week, my first order of business was walking down to a nearby beer store and getting something to drink while I caught up on some football. After scanning the selection, I decided that some Anderson Valley Hop Ottin' sounded good, so I picked up the familiar purple six pack and went to the register.

Upon returning to the hotel, I put five in the fridge and cracked one open. Poured it out. Looked good. Smelled...woah. What? Taste it...horrible. Oh dear god, what is wrong with this beer?

Oh. Turns out they now make a Gose that comes in an extremely similar purple can.

Thankfully, I have a friend in town who will take this off my hands, because I did not like that beer at all. Nothing against Anderson Valley - I've just never tried a beer in that category that I've enjoyed, and this one didn't buck the trend.

But this whole thing got me thinking...has anyone else had a brain fart and picked up a beer that they didn't mean to? If you have, did it end up being disappointing? Or did you find a new gem that you might have otherwise overlooked?

I can't tell you how many times I grabbed a brew off the shelf in excitement, and then got home and found it was past expiration cause I didn't check... ooops....

Never. And I must be an alcoholic because I would have drank the shit out of whatever I bought anyway.

I really like Anderson Valley's Gose.

Don't think I have ever bought the wrong beer, definitely bought expired beer several times.

Just this past August, while shopping for a rafting trip, I had Westbrook One Claw on the brain but bought the White Thai instead. I didn't realize until it was too late to do anything about it. Other than the color, those cans all seem to look the same .

It was all for the best because the weather was sunny and beautiful, and the White Thai provided really nice refreshment anyway.

As a die-hard ticker, I have occasionally bought beer that I have already ticked. Usually save them for when friends drop by.

I've bought Victory Hop Devil when trying to buy Festbier. The packages are extremely similar.

One time my Dad bought Anchor Liberty Ale when he meant to buy Anchor Steam instead. He gave most of them to me because he doesn't really like "hoppy" beers. Quotation marks because I haven't had that beer in over 5 years and it probably wouldn't seem hoppy to me or most people reading this now.

I'm pretty sure I would make that mistake too. That's kind of a lame move on Victory's part. I mean, it's clear that they have a theme going - but that's a pretty easy mistake to make if you're not paying close attention and they're right next to each other.

Also: sad to think that Victory costs more in its own state than elsewhere. One thing I don't really miss about living there.

I once meant to buy a Fruh kolsch and I grabbed the lone Reissdorf that was mistakenly mixed in with them... I was rushing.
Very similar bottles, and I probably couldn't pick out one bottled version vs the other blind. I still went back to the store for the Fruh.

I keep buying Wild Blue thinking it's a Flying Dog beer.

When I was first getting into beer I was looking for a St. Bernardus Wit. I thought I picked up a 750ml but instead I picked up an Abt 12 which I had never had before. It was one of the best mistakes I've ever made.

Have you ever tried a second hand Gose before?

That must be one of PA's lovely independent piece of shit bottle shops who feel they can charge ridiculous prices for the privilege of buying a six pack instead of an entire case. It would be much cheaper at a Wegmans/Whole Foods/Giant Eagle or any place that doesn't try to **** you.

No. My comment was sarcastic yet very real. Look, I "enjoy" everything from Old Mikwaukee to Pliny. I've never had "infected" beers either. I don't believe in drain pours. That shit pisses me off. I'm quite sure I could struggle through a second hand Gose.

I bought Pizza Port Chronic Ale because I thought it would be good. Shoulda gone with Ponto SIPA or Swami's.

    Does that count?

Struggle you will! That style is either beneath my taste, or a million miles beyond. All I know is that I recently had an Italian Gose which shitted on the Westbrook version of a Gose. People hate on Bud Light Chelada Clamato because it's salty. Yet Salinity is one of the ingredients in a Gose. Other than it being Sour. So you get Sour/Salty beer. If not done right...it taste like you're drinking your own vomit. Get the picture now?

Not really. The closest Wegmans to me was asking $11 for Torpedo. Back home in NY, it was going for $8-8.50.
