Well, Thanks to everyone on BA, my stubborn ass is finally stepping away from the IPA/DIPA world for at least one bomber. Saw a 2011 "Great Divide Yeti" at one of my lq stores, and figured today was as good a day as any to pop my RIS cherry. Here goes nothing!

Next year, go to Darkness Day at Surly. Holy Fucking A. its so roasty and thick, yet still bitter (like every good RIS should be). Im finishing my first bottle right now, and damn.

BTW welcome to the wide world of glorious beers!

Forgot to mention others to try:
Chocolate Yeti (sweet and roasty), Great Lakes Blackout, Siberian Night, and Old Raspy!

Yeti is a good place to start. A good amount of balance and have great variants you can find (Oak, Espresso, Chocolate, Belgo). Nice choice

Try New Holland Night Tripper. Super good RIS.

    Cheers!

Best type of glass? Cold out of the fridge? Room Temp? Let it breathe a bit or drink asap after opening? Any tips, tricks, rituals?

Yeti is a great place to start. Easily my favorite "easy to obtain" RIS. All of the yeti variations are worth a shot. I usually let it sit at room temp for ten minutes after the fridge and usually drink out of a tulip.

Personally room temp is a must. I like drinking mine from a snifter as well personally.

A RCH (precise measurement) colder than room temperature for me. I haven't tried them all by any means, but Dark Horse Plead the Fifth is head of the pack so far for me, with Ten Fidy 1 length back.

Plead the 5th is spectacular, but impossible to find outside of K-zoo Michigan this time of year. Any stout from Founders is tops as well. Founders porter is great and was probably my fave until I had an Anchor Porter... WOW! The flavor profile was amazing!

Well the verdict is in...... Great Beer! It isnt anything I could see myself enjoying on a daily basis, but the depth and complexities of flavor in the RIS brews leave me wondering what else is out there. I cant put my finger on it, but my first taste I get resembles grape soda, and when the beer begins to get "too bitter" for me, some warm sweet flavor comes in and mellows everything out. Also, a bomber of this stuff is just too much for 1 guy!
