Why don't we call ourselves beer connoisseurs?

Because we use spreadsheets to keep track of our beer.

Idk, I would deem the term "advocate" or "enthusiast" more fitting. I'm not much into any kind of "fanboying" or anything of the like.

Either because we don't want to succumb to the middle-class inclination (ultimately based in social insecurity) of trying to smarten up our diction by adding extra syllables, or because we're all poor spellers.

We'll leave it to the wine geeks to call themselves oenophiles, and zymurgophile just sounds silly.

Geek/nerd sounds a bit more self-deprecating, when I'm trying to tell someone just how deep into beer I am.

Don't know if I could say "I'm a beer connoisseur" with a straight face, and keep my self-esteem, and not get a deserved punch.

I don't think I'm a geek/nerd, I'm just really into good beer. Other than liking videogames there's nothing nerdy about me.

When talking to people, I like to say "I'm really into beer."

Then, to elaborate, I usually mention that "I collect it and cellar it"

That way, i can avoid labels

didn't know the two were mutually exclusive. i may consider myself a connoisseur, but i refer to myself as a beer snob/ geek because those are better then sounding like a pretentious douche IMHO. (but in truth i consider myself a beer geek more then anything else, let the scotch& wine fanatics call themselves connoisseurs)

I don't. I am a beer advocate (best term), beer aficionado or beer connoisseur, or just that I really like craft beer. I am not any kind of "nerd' or "geek" When I was growing up those words were insults, and they still have that connotation for me. That's why I am science fiction fan, not a "nerd".

I like beer geek/nerd. It fits me. I wear glasses, have unbridled enthusiasm for beer, look up styles and hunt down beer I want to buy, photograph and write reviews. Beer geek is good.
