I helped bury my 95 year-old grandmother yesterday. She was an incredible lady, really taking care of her whole family, and even just a few weeks ago she was still on the floor on her hands and knees with her great-grandchildren, including my own 2 kids. I will never forget her.

After speaking at her funeral and serving as a pall-bearer, I wanted to honor her at home by opening up something special. As per my new rule, I don't post anything from last night, but I wanted to ackowledge that I opened Perennial Abraxas in her honor.

Anyway, Ginger Man NYC has an unbelievable Bruery event starting today, so I helped myself to a liquid lunch. Many of these have never been seen in NY, and likely will never be again. Here was the menu:

I'll note that I have bottles of some of the big boys (BT, CR, GM, Melange 3, Wanderer, BW12) so I wanted to try some other things. In consumption order:

Sour in the Rye with Kumquats. Love the regular. This one was at least as good:

Next up was Tart of Darkness w/ Cherries & Vanilla. Maybe the best aroma on any beer I've ever had:

Topped it off (at 16.2%, which was probably a bad idea, inasmuch as I was heading back to the office aftewards) with Smokey and the Bois - a blend of BT, Smoking Wood, and Bois. This was one of the most complex beers I've ever had. Not one of the best, but definitely an experience.

    Cheers, Grandma!

Schönramer Pils (I know, I know - no adequate glassware, the last one broke so this had to do)
Either way, pretty much the best Pils I've tried so far. Far less obnoxious carbonation than all the Fernsehbiere and the hop aroma is better. To me, also a lot more "süffig" than generic ones.

Edit: Is it just me or does that picture not really show?

Had my first Mikkeller beer last night. A bit on the roasty side of an oatmeal stout, in my opinion, but definitely a solid beer.

First time having this, and I'm impressed. I've passed it up at my local Whole Foods plenty of times. I may never pass it up again. Not too badly priced either.
