For some, I imagine, it's the thrill of the hunt more than the taste of the beer.

This puts my group's recent whale tasting to absolute shame. I'm just green with jealous rage.

So they didn't teleport directly into heaven? Maybe I need to rethink this whole spending all my money chasing beer thing.

I'm sure the Dos Equis / Most Interesting Man in the World guy was invited to the VIP Denver basement sampling session. Flew in from Monte Carlo just for that event.

I'm sure that the five or six people involved with this tasting have no problem with you drinking beer because you like the taste. Not sure why you seem to have a problem with them and their reasons for putting this even together.

I'm just glad that people finally drank these beers and that we all got to read about it. I have always been interested in history in general, and getting a glimpse of the story behind some of these rare beers was probably more interesting to me than actually being able to taste them. Besides, I'm not a huge lambic fan.

That's what everyone without that kind of money always says....until they have that kind of money to toss around :grinning: (I speak only from my own hypothetical mind, not actual experience.....yet!)

Some people collect comic books, classic cars, stamps, etc.
I don't think anyone is expecting these to be the greatest beers in the world, but it's more about the thrill of getting them and actually getting to taste a little bit of history. I think it's kind of neat...and no, I'm not one of the people in the article.

I got this far and stopped reading:

"Big words, big statements, but these guys had what it took to put it together: deep pockets, strong connections and an almost maniacal obsession with hunting rare beers."

...only because it's not my jam (I realize that sounded a little surly). If all of that tickles their pickle, then go forth and ghost whale away. I have a very "beer for the people" approach to beer drinking, what can I say.

You never know until you get there I guess , I still believe it's about the beer , sure status and rep comes with being able to purchase high dollar bottles like this , but on the other hand he could be spending the money on other things but he chooses to spend it on beer , glorious beer

I'm surprised no one has documented the Fantome "Ghost Tastings" that I've seen pictures of online. I'd read that article and start a BA thread about it.

I feel like paying for/chasing ghost whales will prove to be very similar to eating a ghost pepper.

You get an immediate feeling of satisfaction but much regret(in place of the burning sensation) the next morning when you realize your piss is worth about $1000 per pint.

Fat rich guy likes lambics. Gets other rich guys to share theirs in a private white whale sausage fest.
I'll sip my BCBS as that is the "whalest" of beers I care to hunt for.
