I was a little annoyed by the "Profiles & Features" article about The Birch in Norfolk, Virginia, specifically the assertion that The Birch is the reason that "all the restaurants and bars in the area take their beer list seriously." Not only is that a gross exaggeration, it's an arrogant slap in the face to the fine establishments that have been serving quality beers for years. The Bier Garden, for example, just a couple of miles down the road from The Birch, has been open since 1997 and boasts a list of literally hundreds of beers! And I can remember a local restaurant with at least 100 beers from my college days in Norfolk 20 years ago.

I'm not saying that The Birch isn't a fine bar -- their eclectic selection of beers from around the world has brought me back several times -- but when profiling a trendy new bar, don't put down the pioneers of the local craft beer scene, who were cultivating a taste for fine beers before it became fashionable, thus laying the groundwork for the recent explosion of craft beer's popularity.

To provide some context, BA mag didn't state this. It's a quote from Malia Paasch of The Birch, as she praised her local beer scene from her own perspective.

You are correct, it was the bar's owner who said that.
But I stand by my assertion that there's unwarranted arrogance in her suggestion that her work and The Birch's influence have caused the local beer scene to develop a lot in the past 3 years. Craft beer lovers are fortunate to have The Birch in town, but it's just the latest bar to join the growing number of establishments that have been serving high quality, (previously) difficult-to-find beers, some of whom have been doing so for decades (and who I have to thank for turning me on to good beer 20+ years ago, while my college classmates were quaffing crappy beer from Solo cups!)
But I'll stop there - The Birch is a great place to try new beers, even if the owner has a chip on her shoulder.

How does the owner have a "chip on her shoulder"? Malia, as well as her staff, do everything possible to bring solid beer to the area and provide events that no one else hosts. I think that Malia is in a tough spot as one of the only female owners in the area. Of course, Ben had some input in the molding of what The Birch is, but I don't see his new bar making any impact on the craft beer scene, while Malia is set to host Zwanze Day for the second straight year. I would say it's more confidence than arrogance. But this is just my opinion. I don't have a horse in the race. While I love The Beir Garden (and have known Kevin for some time and love the food), I'd much rather go to The Birch as it is a place that I feel is a bit more personable and have met some awesome BA's that have become great friends.

I'm in Va Beach, and we finally seem to have a bit of beer scene happening now.

I will say that Ghent has started improving its game, but I think that's more the establishments springing up in Va Beach, traditionally a beer scene desert. And as far as I've heard, Ben can't directly compete for a while. Its not like anyone else in ghent is doing high quality imports, everyone else thus far is scrambling for well curated high quality american taps. Nobody in Ghent is doing Gueze

Plenty of other places in that area that serve quality brews for waaaaaay less. Anything good at birch is served in a 5 oz goblet for $12. Met the owners at lynnhaven pub, they were...........arrogant for sure.

Go back and read the article I referenced in "Beer Advocate Magazine" when I started the thread. The way that article came across, Malia was taking credit for the appearance of quality beers in the area's restaurants.
I wasn't disputing the fact that The Birch has a fantastic beer selection, just saying that they weren't the first (and for her to say they were is to put down those who came before her - so yeah, kind of putting a chip on her shoulder).

For one thing, her assertion is just not true: NOT all restaurants in the area take their beer lists seriously. There are still plenty of places where you are lucky if you get a Boston Lager. While I call the Birch the "Graduate School of Beer", it is far from the only excellent beer place in the area. You got Cogan's, Public House, YNOT, etc. And these all pre-date the Birch.

Thanks for mentioning Public House! They were good when they first opened, and were even better the last time I went. (I need to go back and review them again...) And while Cogan's beer list isn't quite as eclectic as The Birch's, nobody would say it's not "serious."

This, so much. I love the idea of the Birch but man, tell me what size pour I'm getting with my $9 beer please. At least they have an actual happy hour now instead of that silly 3-5 mess.

Non-beer comment incoming: you have to get a pizza from Chelsea Bakery right next door if you haven't. Good stuff.
