I just had some on tap last week as well. This and Red Racer (or Red Betty) are what got me into craft beer.

Excellent beer. My second favorite porter (after Edmund Fitz.)

What got me into porters. Used to be my favorite of the style but has since handed that throne over to Founders Porter and Odells Cutthroat Porter. (Not a knock on Black Butte by any means, more a testament to how much I love those other two)

It's definitely a good beer but I was a bit let down when I tried my first. Still prefer Founders, Bells, and Great Lakes iterations.

No argument. Founders and GR are far and away superior , however if Nebbie was a single fellow, I wouldn't kick Black Butte out of bed for eating crackers!

Black Butte Porter is in my top 5 of favorites along with Hill Farmstead Everett, Founders Porter, Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald and Bell’s Porter.

    Cheers to tasty Porters!

Deschutes is the Budweiser of Oregon. We offer much better

I hear that often. In Colorado it's just so easy to get Deschutes. Can you tell me a few Oregon breweries I should look for? I like all styles, so that's not important.

I used to drink it all the time before I got into craft beer. And almost everytime I was already wrecked on tequila. Now that I might actually appreciate it, I live somewhere where I can't get it.

Disagree strongly. Different palates I guess. I can get those 2 whenever I want in NC but don't. I get Black Butte rarely, but it's just so damn tasty and complex for a 5.5% Porter. So good

I'll stick with Eddie Fitz and Founders Porter after recently going through my first 6-pack of Black Butte.

I was actually underwhelmed, but still thought it was good.. Deschutes just started distributing in Ohio in January, so I've gone years hearing about how great it was.. maybe my expectations were just too high, but I don't put in anywhere near Founders Porter and Eddy Fitz.. but I don't think Black Butte is bad or anything..

Black Butte is very solid but for the same price for a 6 pack I'll buy Obsidian Stout over it 9 times out of 10.

I like it, too. Probably take it over Founders (I find Founders to be a bit overhyped). Ed Fitz is top caliber. But the all-time king, IMO, is Sammy Smith Tadcaster. Either that or Anchor.

But for those in WI, I just discovered Door County Brewing's Polka King, and holy god, it is the real deal! An excellent porter that can stand with anything mentioned in this thread. I attribute its abysmally low BA rating to the fact that a) it isn't hoppy enough for most BAs, nor does it have brettanomyces in it and b) it's not barrel aged enough. But for your standard 5.5% (or thereabouts) porter, it is damn near perfect.
