Second new beer of the day, a tasty red IPA from Sierra Nevada to go along with dinner!
Pours a deep mahogany red with a finger and 1/2 worth of head.
Smells of some piney hops and some of those "red" roasted malts.
Red/Amber Ales/IPA's are another one of my favorite styles and this one is tasty, but what else would you expect from Sierra Nevada?
It's got that bitterness and then a smoky maltiness on the back end. Really tasty.
Paired it with a jalapeno, Sriracha, Swiss and Provolone cheese burger and hot dog.

    Cheers!

Greetings NBS! It's been several weeks since I've posted in this thread, and I have certainly missed it! I just returned from an overcast, yet relaxing weekend up in the lakes region of New Hampshire. Yesterday, I got in a nice round of golf and visited a tiny little brewery called Lone Wolfe Brewing. If you every get up to Wolfeboro, I recommend checking it out, as the man behind the operation is awesome and makes some solid brews. Pictured below is my flight, I highly recommend the Imperial IPA (my brother and law and I took home a growler of that one) and the Saison:

Today, we hit the beautiful new Smuttynose brewery in Hampton, NH on our way home. I've always been a big Smutty fan, and I managed to try two new brews. Their Tripel and special release Smuttlabs Oak-Aged Tripel (pictured below)

The Tripel was great, brewed well to style with yeasty, fruity and sweet notes with a nice body and smooth finish. The Oak Aged one was delicious, as the Chardonnay barrels added great oaky tones and fruity flavors I don't often get in a Tripel. I am glad I got a bottle to take home! I actually just added this one to BA, and my review is linked below for those inclined to read

I think this is it for new beers for me today, though I do have Smutty's Scotch Ale calling my name from the fridge...

    Cheers all!

Referring to the update about like you said about reviewing on this site. I don't know why they took it down, but I'm glad they brought it back.

I recently had an '07 and thought it was good, but definitely prefer it fresh. However, it felt kinda cool drinking a beer bottled when I was 16!

From my recent trip to North Carolina; been saving it for NBS:

Poured copper-brown with a foamy head that lingered very well; smell was that of caramel and just a hint of chocolate or cocoa. Mouthfeel rather thin for the style. The taste was more bitter than I had expected, and rather flat; I wonder if perhaps this bottle was past it's prime (I couldn't find an "enjoy by" date). Since I can't get Duck-Rabbit in my state, it may be a while before I try this one again, but I'll definitely give it a go with a sample that's known to be fresh.

This is an outstanding stout that only gets better with age. I have a couple 2012s left. So creamy and smooth.

    f

This beer is solid. Lagunitas just keeps on keeping on. Can't give them enough credit - especially when it comes to pricing.

#4 for today is a beauty. Enjoying this for dessert after having a brat and some steamed broccoli for dinner.

Siberian Night is rich and decadent, sublime and mellow. The roasted malts in the stout have big cocoa, chocolate, and waves of gooey caramel flavor. The barrel presence is divine with vanilla, bourbon, and marshmallow. A soft, full, velvety body make this a terrific treat for tonight. All around fantastic BA stout.

Happy (500th?!) New Beer Sunday, everyone. This is my favorite recurring thread on the site, and I'm glad to participate in a milestone iteration.

I cracked into a Supplication today. Some brewer named "Russian River." A perfect beer on a warm fall New England afternoon.

In brief, just a wonderful beer. Cherry, lemon, wine, oak, and bretty funk.

That's all I'll write for now -- more beer to enjoy. Have a great week, everyone.

A second beer is in order here. I just found out my 18 year old baby sister is engaged. Fortunately I have had time to turn my reaction into something a bit more tactful before I congratulate her! (Nonononononostupidstupidstupid!->"That certainly is news! Congratulations!"
    So anyway about the beer!
Looks beautiful. I am really loving the color and clarity on this one. Both smell and taste are giving me pears, wheat bread, white grape skin and a wee bit of hay. Slightly malty but still dry and subtle.
    I like it.
    PS:
Also worth noting if you look closely to the right of the bottle neck in the photo our fish have had some news of their own. That's right, it's a baby platy fish!)
...and because I couldn't resist some Billy Idol!

What a fantastic NBS milestone! Ill admit I didn't open anything special for the day, just grabbed a NEW beer out of the fridge that I felt like drinking today... and that's what it's all(ways) about
    [IMG]
This is one of those beers that looks and smells great but unfortunately the taste doesn't quite deliver. No huge flaws, just a bit sweet even for the style and lacks any hop influence whatsoever which I feel would be a positive addition. Still worth a try; FWIW I think Atom Smasher would be a great name for an IPA but doesn't remind me much of fall/Oktoberfest

2 New Beers at Carton Brewery – One a Pale Ale for the national stage, Hoppun, (4.5) and the other, a rare seasonal based on Butternut Squash that beats almost any Pumpkin Ale, Rav Gourd 6. (4)

    Hoppun- Carton Brewing Company
    4.46/5 rDev +8.5%look: 4.25 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.5

I've enjoyed this 3x at the Brewery. In dress beta in late July, on 8/1/14 cold draft *thank you Brian!, and on 8/2/14 on cask, thank you Kelsie! Wow!

Augie Carton said he would wait to experiment with his talented team before brewing Carton's own APA, and wait until their anniversary they did. The team has nailed a national best beer. You must try it.

As the brewer wrote: "We push around experimental hops 06300 and HBC342 with Super Galena and Mosaic, soften the edges with a traditional pale malt bill and then tie it all together with the fruity esters of British yeast." and recorded:

My go-to beers are hoppy APAs (e.g. Dales, Stone, Sierra Nevada).
A: Darker than expected, a brooding apricot, dense looking, with ample retention and lacing.
S: A big nose packed full of complex berry, grass, hay, summer, and piney hops. Nuanced and wine-like.
The blueberry is easy to pick out.
T: Amply hoppy but well balanced, and this regard it maybe beats an IPA. Wine like long finish. Plenty of malt and sweet yeast make this almost a Euro-influenced beer. Complex like a Belgian.
MF: light to med bodied, fresh, and a long finish in the good way carton knows how to do it.

Overall. An APA ready for national stage.

Rav Gourd Ale (#6) - Carton Brewing Company

    4.08/5 rDev 0%look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

This is work in progress, or I think it might earn a higher rating.
Move over pumpkin ale, make way for butternut squash, which if you think about it, or taste it, may be a better gourd match for beer. But Rav doesnt stop there, it goes on to add fennel, sage, butter, and crushed biscotti - all local. All cuisine inspired.

A When she sticks more lace she's gonna go 4+, but for now the highlight is the COLOR which is more golden amber like the flesh of a butternut squash.
S; while hard to pick out all the ingredients from the cupboard in the smell, they definitely contribute and are fun to pick out on the tongue. Still solid malt base spread with butter nut squash butter.
T: Follows the smell but offers more! A great sweet - to - pepper arc. Appetizing. If you focus you can detect the sage and fennel, not at all cloying. yet sweet. The right balance for a fruit beer.
MF: still a bit thin, but great finish.
Look forward to seeing Rav 6 graduate into production. I'd take this over ANY pumpkin ale.

Decided to reach into the cellar for NBS #500, and pulled out a bottle of Stickee Monkee. I had fairly high hopes for this one, and it certainly delivered. Lots of wonderful bourbon and vanilla aroma, and nice toffee and dark fruit flavors. If I had been served this blind, I might have considered it an English Barleywine rather than a Quad, but semantics...

Hopefully, I can find another bottle one day. So far for me, anything barrel aged from Firestone Walker has been a winner.

    New Saison/Farmhouse Ale Sunday!

    Hello all!

Glad that NBS has gone into its 500th week! Time sure does fly! May it be around for many more!

Chilly but sunny day here in the Milwaukee area. A couple days ago I bought the fall variety pack from Sam Adams. I've had the lager and the o-fest plenty of times (both solid brews). I tried the Pumpkin yesterday - not bad and today I had the saison. I wouldn't say it's near the "best of style", but it was nice enough. Overall, it was a worthy purchase!

Yikes, I remember being engaged at 18. Shudder. I am soooooooooo glad I came to our senses. I'm sure lots of people in our lives offered a hearty, " con(nostupidstupiddon'tdoitfercryinoutloud)gratulations!"

On the other hand I know several lovely couples who got married very young, it can work. All the best to them, cheers!
