So it looks like Boulevard will be doing a barrel aged version of their Imperial Stout to be released in 2015. The barrels will be from Heaven Hill. I assume this will be part of the Smokestack Series.

I don't think they ever do fully barrel-aged releases -- past Imp stouts have been blends of BA and non-BA stout, and Rye-on-Rye is only partly BA as well.

Isn't their Imperial Stout already partially barrel-aged?

"To add extra complexity and depth, this Imperial Stout is made up of a blend of freshly brewed beer and several barrel-aged beers, carefully balanced."

Hmmmm, I didn't realize(or just plain forgot?) the Imperial Stout was normally partially barrel aged. I wonder if this means that the normal December release date is getting pushed back a few months into 2015 or if these will get blended for the December 2015 release.

Is the base beer for this Dark Truth?
Drank a bottle of the 2013 Imperial Stout last week. 40% barrel aged/60% fresh. it was really good.

I'm excited to see how this turns out, it seems like slightly new territory for them but i truly enjoy their work.....especially Tank 7.

Correct. Dark Truth uses a belgian yeast strain, whereas the Imperial Stout uses brewer's yeast, I believe.

We've released this beer annually over the past few years typically around December or January. As in past years, a portion of the beer will be aged in used whiskey/bourbon barrels and a portion will be fresh beer blended in for the purpose of balancing the whiskey notes and adding body to the beer. As you know, barrel aged beers tend to lose a bit of body.

The base beer is very similar to Dark Truth's malt bill, but is a bit bigger as far as body and ABV goes.

This is incorrect. Dark Truth and Imperial Stout are both fermented with our house Belgian yeast strain.

Thanks for the response and insight. I pulled my 2013 bottle out to check it just before you replied. I can't believe I forgot that it was partially barrel aged.

Shows what I know. Both outstanding brews either way. Wish I could get these locally. Was hoping that Duvel Moortgat would expand distro.

I believe the distro footprint is slowly growing, as Boulevard has entered SEPA recently...

Huh, I've had people in New York request that I not send Boulevard before since they said they could get it locally. Hmmmm

I guess it depends where you are. Like if you live in the Albany area it's just a quick drive over the border into MA, where you can get Boulevard aplenty. Here in the city it's at least a few hour drive to get to anywhere in Boulevard's distro footprint. Luckily, my in-laws live in Baltimore and my wife's Aunt and Uncle live in KC, so I can get it whenever I want. Still waiting to crack open my Love Child No. 4.

I definitely hear you about the requests to not send things though. In a recent trade I received some extras (about which I will not complain, because a. they were extras, and b. they were expensive and delicious) that I could easily have gotten (and have before) just by taking a 15 minute car-ride into New Jersey.

Ahhh that's it. Dude did live near Albany, actually. I bet you'll like that LC#4, more wine barrel tartness this time around.
That's a complicated situation with extras, though! What can you do?
