Wicked Weed Amorous barrel aged dry hopped sour IPA. Definitely different. Not a bit sour fan but had to try. Very sour even in the aroma. A big hit to the sides of the tongue, dry finish and could not taste the hops. Overall a very unique beer just not my style. Cheers. see if the pic works

[IMG] A first for me. I'm sure most of you have sampled this. My brother @lonewolfcry tell's me he's drank a "shit ton" of it. Being one who prefers dark beers, I wasn't actually looking forward to trying it so much. Truth is though I like it. For what I paid for it, I will probably not buy it again. Not a bad beer, just not what I look for in a beer. Cheers.

To the congregation of the church of NBS, I send my märzens of good will and light roasty flavor. It is once again time for one of my never knock-off NBS reviews. This Sunday’s offering?

    Boulder’s Dragonhösen: Imperial Oktoberfest

Bomber poured vigorously into a .5L Staatsbrauerei Rothhaus glass. Beer **** to follow.

    http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/b513/jmshoemaker1512/NBS502_zps38abdac4.jpg

Sight: Clear and rosy amber when held up to natural light. Head is an off-white nature and very delicate though tall. Settles down after a while to a quarter-inch foam, leaves thick lacing.

Aroma: Gentle biscuit, caramel, bread. Slight earth, slight hops. I’d use the word delicate to give an overall adjective, typical of most märzens.

Taste: Wow! The taste mimics the aroma, with just a hint of smoke. Though the abv clocks in at 9%, the booze is well-masked; easier to detect as it warms up. Drinks like something half its size.

Mouthfeel: Medium, with small but never-ending bubbles. It provides a pleasant coating on the tongue and goes down smoothly.

Overall: Fantastic steroid version of the traditional märzen.

And now, another mix of traditional Deutsch and steroids:

Another New Jackie O's Beer Sunday

Mucho problemos (yeah, I took German in high school) with the website this week. Don't mean to sound like a jerk, but in all seriousness, they should consider a new host. Anyway, I decided to post a few "What beers was I drinking" pics from the past week. Really enjoyed the Doppel. Was disappointed by Black Butte. Too sweet.

As for today, this 36 degree morning inspired me to crack open a stout (like I needed inspiration). This is the latest barrel aged offering from Athens, Ohio. Some people may make "that face" or roll your eyes when you read this, but I think that their barrel aged line of brews will hold their own against anyones in the country (yes, even Firestone). Obviously, there are many breweries offerings that I have not had the chance to try yet (Central Waters), but so far, blown away by such a small operation doing what they are.

Like regular Oil, it pours an opaque black. Has a small mocha head that does have a little ring that survives all the way down the snifter. Smell is very strong aroma of rum. Very sweet, similar to a Captain and Coke, with vanilla, carmel, and toffee. Also slight cocoa and roasted aromas as it warms, but the rum overshadows everything else. The taste has the rum right up front. Sweet, with a little burn. Toward the back of my tongue, I get the slightly chared, roasted malt and chocolate, with a nutty aftertaste. The walnut aspect is what sets this stout apart both with the regular version, and this one. This may sound stupid, but my biggest critisim would be the rum. While quite enjoyable, it takes the spotlight and doesn't share well. It also seems to have thinned the body of this beer. not as viscous and oily as the original. The balance does seems to improve the more it warms. I think Oil of Aphrodite is an outstanding beer. I also think this version is outstanding, just different. The barrel does not take it to world class status. Only offers a new spin. Another outstanding brew from Jackie O's though. Here is the lowdown http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1432/63210/?ba=WesMantooth#navigation 4.24

** For those who don't like pumpkin, you may want to look the other way. Have to try not to be drunk before the Bengals game tonight since "Pumpkinfest" awaits. Going to make a pumpkin draft and sample a few new ones. Here is my share since I am hosting. Other than Cigar City Good Gourd and Rumpkin, I have tried or acquired all of the ones on my list. Always open to new suggestions.

    New Double IPA Sunday
Greetings fellow NBS faithful! This one is sure to warm the spirit on a chilly fall day in Central OH.

I hope you all have a fine American Ale in your snifter, flute, or teku today.

    Cheers!

    Brooklyn Blast

Aroma: Pungent combination of lemon zest and pine tar up front. Light honey notes and orange blossom floral notes abound. Clean fermentation character. A caramel base asserts as the beer warms and is agitated.

Appearance: Very cloudy amber pour with hazy golden edging. Moderate off white head that retains well. Effervescence noted in the glass.

Flavor: Firm pine-like bitterness up front. A honey malt character is noted and well-knit with lemon and pine hop flavors. A crystal malt presence is noted but it dries quickly and is beat back by the pine and earthy bitterness. Balance is firmly bitter. Finish is dry. Aftertaste is long with a powdery resin-like hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with medium high carbonation. A slight warming alcohol presence noted. No hop astringency. No oiliness or creaminess noted.

Overall impression: A well-crafted double IPA. A bit heavy handed on the malt which blurs the line between American Barleywine or American Strong Ale but it’s firmly in range of a double IPA. A nice change but not sure I’d put this in my regular rotation.

Btw, I used the word "delicate" several times during my review. I waited too long to change it. And next time? Imgur links over photobucket.

Happy to hear the brew is not just a gimmick, and they produced a quality offering. Speaking of quality- FANTASTIC comedy duo. I prefer 7 into 28 13 times, or even the craps routine, but those guys had something that 99.9% of comedians today lack.

Greetings fellow NBSers! A semi-cloudy morning is giving way to a sunny mid-day here in the Fourth Corner, which is nice because next Saturday is the second Saturday of October, when it traditionally starts raining here, which continues until the 5th of July. Here in the PNW we are smack dab in the middle of Fresh Hop season, and the Yakima Fresh Hop fest was this weekend. I couldn't go (damn paycheck drops Tuesday!), although last year was a blast. I'll be getting a report from my friends who made the trip later today. In that spirit is my first NBS entry, from Astoria, OR: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/16077/138347/

This past Friday was Oct 3, birthday of 2 of my favorite musicians, both of whom are no longer with us.

Something I'd never do, but I understand your sentiment. I bought my father their complete set of movies with all their classic routines in them for Christmas a while back. I also liked the "show episodes" and remember watching a recorded VHS version of the shows on Comedy Central (when they showed funny stuff 15+ years ago) in which there was pre-episode commentary with Larry David, Larry Charles and Jerry Seinfeld. You learned quite a bit about the bits and the actors from the trio's moderation, so to speak. Great stuff.

Well happy Sunday to all NBS'ers
Another week closer to retiring(20 more years though) started out fairly chilly in southeast CT this morning, filled my morning with some neighborly love putting brake lines in for my neighbor( I hate being a mechanic) o well got some ribs in the smoker and some beef jerky in the dehydrator. BEER TIME!!! To start with today I'm having this guy. Well done 4.25/5 reminds me of Kbs with a little more roast bite to it?
Damn pics messed up again sorry here's a link. http://i777.photobucket.com/albums/yy59/koncept_0/2014-08/4DE940C7-B848-4DFB-B976-3AA37A564D3F.jpg

So glad I got to see Stevie. He opened for Moody Blues 1981(?), before Double Trouble, did a set of all Hendrix, and played behind his head and with his teeth, just like the master had. It was as close to hearing Jimi play as it was possible to do. What a genius Mr. Vaughan was, what a loss.

Good afternoon and morning across America! This morning my cats and dogs were antsy to get out and check the change of season; lots of creatures moving around in the 38 degree 6:30 AM. They were more eager for Sunday to begin than I was. Great coffee, a long walk with my lovely wife and dogs, and some great conversations with neighbors all helped Sunday begin very nicely indeed.
I had originally planned to comment on Flying Dog Raging Bitch AND an old Mikkeller Big Worse. I'll speak to Raging Bitch, but first the OLD Mikkeller. That may have been the nastiest beer that I've ever encountered. Granted that I found it in a box under my sons old bed- hidden for maybe 3 years- but still it smelled like Tootuncommons spiderwebbed backside dragged through silage. OK. I sneezed six times getting rid of that "essence". It's like the smell of rum when you're 17, drunk, wishing you were dead, swimming back to the living. I refused to take a picture of this disaster. Please thank me.
The Flying Dog Raging Bitch is not my favorite style, but I notice a good number of folks buying this one regularly, so I thought I'd give it a whirl. Well, this is very alcohol sweet with Belgian yeast written all over it. The hops do a good job of cleaning up the sweetness, but the rather cloying beginning remains back in the sensory statement, predominant. People like this one most likely because it's well made, and 8.3%. I'd rather just have a Merry Monks or Golden Monkey and not worry so much about the hops.
I first saw Bob Seger at the Atlanta Pop Fest in Byron, Georgia (1970). He stole the show amongst luminaries and legends. The announcer is a complete ass, I think.

I still haven't gotten to that one yet, but have to put it on the list. My brother texted me yesterday from a Beer Fest, saying how much he was enjoying it, so I guess the time may be right. Now if only I could remember where I saw it last...

I haven't been drinking many IPAs lately; just kind of burnt out on them. I'm glad I saved my palate for this one. It's a tour de force of Galaxy hops: big, hoppy aroma, with pepper, starfruit, lemon, and cat musk; complex and juicy flavor, mostly tropical fruit, with a bit of citrus up front, big oregano-like herbal notes, and a dank finish; and just enough of a pale malt body to very subtly make its presence known.

    Really, really nice beer.

    New Red IPA Sunday

Hey NBSers, hope everyone is having a great Sunday. I spent the better of this perfect autumn day painting the metal roof over the sun room. I look a bit like the tin woodsman right now. Anyway, my hard work earned me a red IPA courtesy of @beertunes. Thanks Terry!
