How important is the "buzz"?

For me its about 75% taste and 25% buzz. The wide variety of flavors and hobby aspect of getting limited beers is what its mostly about for me. For sure I like a moderate buzz, but when I really want to go all out with the buzz there is another herb that I prefer over hops.

That's because Coke is syrupy sweet and full of sugars, acids, and preservatives that rot your teeth and insides. Aside from a few good craft sodas, such as Bruce Cost ginger ales, most commercially available soda is too syrupy sweet and acidic in my opinion. I usually drink water or tea, with beer as a treat on my days off.

There's a wealth of evidence to support that ethanol is psychologically and physiologically addictive. Why did you START drinking beer? I doubt you had your first one and thought "this tastes great, what other beverages taste like this?".

Personally, the buzz is necessary. The buzz gets me into the supermarket to look for a beer. The taste and variety is what keeps me there looking for new beers to try.

Then you should be able to provide pointers to the research data/evidence that supports this claim.

I wonder if enjoying the taste of beer more would lead to better connectivity.

Like I said previously...judging by the vast majority of these comments I'm starting to wonder if I'm a member of a craft beer site. I was not condoning keg stands and pissing your pants in my previous comments but honestly what is going on in this thread?!?!? People drink alcohol for the buzz. If this weren't true then all the "big beers" on this site would have lower ratings and sales. Instead all of these high abv beers top the list and are so highly sought after that you have to offer your first born son as a trade offer. There is nothing wrong with enjoying the effects of alcohol and if you're so appalled by it then stop drinking it. The calories aren't worth it if the buzz isn't present. I could have a milkshake for the same amount of cals as two Imperial Stouts. If these stouts contained no alcohol then I would surely choose a milkshake every time. Based on the geriatric mentality of most the people posting maybe these breweries should start brewing/producing high quality sodas and juice.

I'm not sure that what is being said is "beer should be alcohol-free. Getting drunk is tantamount to sacrilege." I think the point of many of these posts is that beer is more than "just" a buzz. Sometimes the buzz limits the experience. Pretty much everyone likes the buzz. It's just sometimes the beer experience is AS important as the effects the alcohol itself.

And I could easily choose a milkshake over two horrible tasting high-ABV stouts in a heartbeat. Or to take it another direction, you'd rather have 10 Miller Lites than a milkshake?

That said, I would choose a 4% sour I like over all previously mentioned options. Although the discussion is fun, I am not sure the two "sides" are as polarizing as some people are making them.

No polarization. Just a fun way to think about beer. All points are as valid as all others. There can be no right or wrong way to love beer. Just different perspectives on an intriguing topic.

drinking for many people has become a ritualized behavior, and not a chemical dependancy behavior.
Not sure that Todd fully understands that. he "polled" people in a bar. That is like polling people at a democratic convention if they like Obama.

I absolutely do not desire the effects of alcohol one bit. I do not drink to get drunk, or even buzzed. For the past three nights, I have watched tv while drinking a single 5.3% beer. One beer, nursed over an hour. If my intention was to get buzzed, I would surely desire drinking more.

I am a connoisseur, I do not care about alcohol content. If I get a buzz, I get a buzz, I know its going to happen, occasionally. But really now, if that's all you're after then you should just drink Steel Reserve or cheap liqr like Vodka and save yourself all that money and calories.

Why is it so hard to believe to the point that you have to question whether or not this is a craft beer site? Seriously, a lot of people are moderate drinkers. Not everyone is a raging alcoholic that gets mad when they find out someone doesn't share their passion for getting drunk.

Besides that, sours are becoming VERY popular, people are paying top dollar for sours and they have relatively low ABV percentages. That should tell you something...

There are times that I would love to have a beer and not worry about the affects, and there are some strong beers that are so good that I wish they weren't quite so high in alcohol, but I'm not going to say I'd be as interested in drinking if it were alcohol free.

@beerwolf I'm afraid I must have accidentally signed up to Rootbeeradvocate as well. If you like a buzz or to be drunk and fun from time to time then just consider yourself an alcohol and check yourself in. Never thought I'd get advice from that on a beer lovers forum :stuck_out_tongue:

*advice like that. I must have had too many. Maybe you're all right and beer should be somewhere between 2% and NA so I could text better on my phone :slight_frown: Best believe I'm going straight to rehab in the AM

Im completely content with drinking 1 beer per night, no matter what the ABV. Dont get me wrong, i love a good buzz, but i dont really enjoy drinking beyond that. And if i do, i will make sure its a commercial beer simply because i find no need in wasting good craft beers once my judgement is already impaired. My senses are thrown off once im drunk, so there is just no need to go drinking something from the cellar, unless ive already had it and im trying to clear up some inventory lol

Trust me I don't waste my high priced/rare craft beer on a drunken excursion. Most the time I won't even drink two exceptionally rated beers in the same day. When I go to a normal bar I'm not gonna drink a beer or two and call it quits...nor am I going to wanna drink something that makes me look like I'm in my second trimester or pregnancy. Savoring your most sought after/beloved beers isn't the issue it's getting on a soap box on a beer forum and proclaiming you solely drink alcohol for taste and only drink a smidgen to avoid intoxication because it repulses you. Saying you'd prefer all beer to be 3% and under and acting like the majority of alcohol drinkers are doing it all wrong and should evaluate their lifestyles. The buzz is part of drinking alcohol I'm sorry...

You'd be surprised how many people really do drink for taste. Wine spit buckets are a good indication of this. and seriously, you can't drink Bourbon and Rum everyday to get drunk, you would just be destroying your liver. So yeah, even those people are drinking for taste as well.

That is very true. But it just seems like really expensive stuff for what is realistically just a mouthwash lol. I can see if your at a tasting event and trying a lot of them in a small period of time, but there are really people that would spend in excess of 100$ on a bottle just to spit it down the drain!? lol
