I moved to Washington State from Boston three months ago. I was reading an article from my old home town paper and was struck that beer is one reason among others that I'm happy to be here.

The bar owner being interviewed in the article remarks that it's often easier to get fresh beer from California than fresh local beer in Boston. That is so true. Distribution is much healthier here. It's not hard to find six and twelve packs with beer brewed in the past month. In Boston that happened about once every year for me.

Well done. I look forward to drinking more beer here.

It's even better when you buy a bomber that was bottled the day before.

I'm sure it is. What was the last one you had, and where did you buy it?

Welcome to the NW. If the releative freshness of the beer out here makes you happy, just wait till you see the prices.

I loved places like Armsby Abbey, and I thought the selection at Julio's was great, but my God, the prices people are accustomed to paying back there.

All y'all just hush now. Our beer is old, crappy, expensive and common, remember? We had that meeting.

I've spent a little bit of time in Boston over the past few years and the thing that I've come away with is that we have to work far less to get access to good beer here. There are some very good beer bars in Boston for sure. We have that here, along with a crazy amount of taprooms and brewpubs which, correct me if I'm wrong, are legally harder to open in MA.

As if that weren't enough there's good beer on tap at almost every restaurant or even dive bar here. Many times in Boston I had to resort to Harpoon IPA if I wanted a beer with dinner.

With that said, I didn't get to make it to Jack's Abby, or Trillium or Tree House ... but that goes right back to my point about access and all! Hoping to make it to all three when I visit in just over a week.

    Welcome to Seattle!

What you say is true. There is plenty of excellent beer available in Boston, including some labels that I miss a lot. But beer culture hasn't permeated the whole environment the way it has here.

The most frustrating thing about access in New England is the scarcity of the best Vermont beers, which really are among the best in the country. I used to make frequent, tightly scheduled trips to a town in Vermont within 60 miles of the Lawson's, Hill Farmstead and Alchemist breweries, and none of those great beers were available there. Heady is the worst - Alchemist has steadily increased production and decreased the distribution area until it's like a storm in the desert where the rain never hits the ground.

    ‘Rain’ is frequent here,
    Nourishing, available.
    No one else takes note.

    welcome!

This is prevalent in the wet hop thread over in talk. A few of us talked about the awesome fresh hops available out here in the PNW, and people just complained that we were bragging because they're so regionally based and hard to acquire. No one appeared even interested in trading for them...

That's... not the response... that you see when other regional, hard to acquire, beers are brought up...

We should consider ourselves lucky. Lack of national exposure and trade demand leaves more for locals to enjoy.
