I've been pretty quick and lazy with my reviews lately; I don't feel my palate is really up to it at the moment. (I've also been fighting off a cold; beer seems to be helping. :grinning:) But hearing that your own impression of the beer lines up with mine is simultaneously satisfying (justifying?) and humbling.

    Cheers!

Greetings and Happy NBS my friends! I hope this message finds you enjoying a fine American Ale in your flute, snifter, or nonic today!

Weather in Central OH is cool but sunny. The fall sun warms you up if you are out for a bit and the colors are majestic.

I hope I'm not being hateful today b/c Stone decided to build their eastern facility in Richmond, VA and not Columbus, OH. I have to give props to Stone for brewing a beer exclusively for OH. I just hope it has a little more going for it than the one in my glass today.

    Happy NBS my friends!!

    Stone Coffee Milk Stout

Aroma: Mild cocoa and baker's chocolate notes up front. Slightly woody hop notes in the background. No real discernible coffee notes despite what the bottle says. Slight creamed coffee character as the beer warms.

Appearance: Dense black pour with leather brown edging. Low tan head that doesn't retain well.

Flavor: Woody notes with a firm roasted coffee bean character up front. Earthy bitterness provides a nice counterpoint with a touch of fading creamer-like sweetness. Finish is clean and dry. Aftertaste is bitter. But coffee bitter. Not hop bitter.

Mouthfeel: Medium light bodied with high carbonation. Slightly astringent.

Overall impression: An average, thin stout. Misses the mark on multiple levels for me.

Are you referring to the brewery that Tully's moved into or the really old Rainier brewery across the street from Full Throttle and Jules Mae? The latter looked pretty much abandoned last time I was there (fall, 2012), so I'd expect the former, but isn't Emerald City there as well?

I have seen these creatures up close. For years I've camped on The Shackleford Banks, untouched by roads, and only accessible by boat. These ponies are shy, but friendly. They are truly beautiful and are a testament to survival. Fresh water on these barrier islands is a rare commodity and they work hard to survive. To consider that these are the ancestors of Spanish, Portuguese, and English shipwreck survivors is amazing, and I've touched them! Up by Duck N.C., they wander around astonished by tourists that have no clue.

Transient Artisan Ales Wayward 100% Brett Pale Ale hopped with Citra and Amarillo. Wonderful notes of mango, pineapple, grapefruit and orange candy, spicy floral, and a slight dank pine from the hops are extremely well balanced by the fruity, slightly tart, and funky brett. Perfect balance between hop and brett.

In terms of craft beer, Chicago pretty much has it all…except for a brewery that focuses and executes on sours. That brewery has finally come: Transient Artisan Ales. Although only a gypsy brewery at this point, the brewer Chris Betts really knows what he is doing. Keep an eye out for this brewery if you are in the Chicago area!

3 New beers this weekend. 2 Saisons and 1 Harvest.
    Carton Harvest 2014 Calypso 4.1
Freshly made beer featuring local harvested hop bounty is hard to beat even if it's a quick and spontaneous brew. A for freshness.

A: Light as a pilsener. A bit of dotty lacing. Light and sunny.
S: Orchard, earthy, fall tart fruit, mari-jane bouquet.
T: Salty, earthy, fall tart fruit, hooch, and squash.
F: A bit thin, finish not quite there yet. But fresh.

    Grisette 3.8

    look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

A - A nice pillow of bubbles the head in this one over a 1/2 inch. The color is a nice hazy bright yellow as expected for the style.
S - Smells of mild citrus hops, coriander spice, and mild lemon peel. Strong enough but not loaded like some beers.
T - A nice flavor it's sort of dry with the yeast giving you some fruit flavors and the citrus hop taste in the finish. Flavors of orange and lemon seem natural enough and balanced with the peel. Not bad.
M - Light to medium, rather crisp and carbonated. Easy enough to drink from the can.

Overall a pretty great Saison not the best but easy on the flavors and has a great ABV that will not knock you down. May get this again

Heavy Seas - Red Sky At Night (Saison Ale)
    3.85/5 rDev +4.9%
    look: 3 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 3 | overall: 4

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a very modest head that retains poorly and fails to lace

Smell: Immediate whiff of Belgian funk, with candi sugar, banana and melon aroma underneath

Taste: Starts with a rather biting fruity flavor with melon aspects - a bit like a watermelon jelly belly; after the swallow, the funk makes a brief appearance but is overwhelmed by the honey flavor of the candi sugar; the yeasty elements also come through to the finish

Mouthfeel: Light body with moderate carbonation; a bit hot, however

Drinkability: A tasty beer, but flawed, in my judgement; the carbonation and mouthfeel are clearly not Belgian and the flavor is more like a Belgian Strong Pale than a Saison; nevertheless, I am scoring it not to style but to my tastebuds and I enjoyed drinking this beer

Hey, my ratings are back! Here's my Smuttynose/Stone Cluster's Revenge review:

While I'm posting, I also had two other brand new beers this weekend: Founders Dark Penance and Grey Sail's Captain's Daughter.

I thought Dark Penance was exactly in line with what I want from a black IPA: smooth, creamy, hoppy (citrus and pine), with a nice cocoa malt backbone.

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1199/127483/?ba=Roguer

Captain's Daughter is a fantastic DIPA from a brewery known for decent but typically not exceptional brews. This one is exceptional (and therefore doubly so, if you please). It's a solid, hop-forward, juicy and peppery DIPA, but where it really shines is the mouthfeel; it's got the smoothest, creamiest feel I've had in a DIPA outside of Vermont.

Not really sure. Emerald City is (was? I haven't heard much from 'em lately) somewhere in the same complex. Not the Tullys part for sure. Elysian is in there, and I think another brewery too. 5800 block of Airport way, so it looks like the really old building. Cool spot.

    Happy New Brazillian Beer Sunday!

What a gorgeous day, too. We drove down from the Catskills today, and the foliage up there, especially as you approach Monticello, is really peaking right now. It has definitely put me in an autumnal mood, and I have a perfect beer for such a day- as cheery as it is soothing. Wals Sao Francisco- Dubbel brewed with raisins.

Not much carbonation or head here, but that's just fine- it has velvety mouthfeel to spare. The dark fruit character is front and center, and it's a pleasant surprise to me that it doesn't simply scream 'raisins'. Instead there seems to be some contributions from the yeast and malt as well in that direction, and it's all well woven together. Otherwise I'm getting glimpses of dark rum, vanilla, pumpernickel, warm yeasty spiciness, but that just serves to give just enough needed complexity; this is all about those dark fruits. Nothing is too heavy, either- it's all put together with a deft touch, right down to that perfect snap of bitterness to finish things off. What a delicious beer! A-

    Afternoon ya'll!
Just settling in after kicking butt all morning with the chores (grocery shopping, me cleaning the house/wife doing the weekly cooking) and some running around. Thought about hitting my bike up for a nice 30-40 miles ride but it's already about 90 degrees out, so eff that.
Sitting here watching the SD/Oak game on the tube (I'm a 9er fan so this is strictly because Rivers is my FFB QB), enjoying this beer for the first time (bottled 9/16) and waiting, impatiently so, for Game 2 of the NLCS.
While I usually go for the DIPA, Davey Jones, from Iron Springs, I saw this and it's low $4.49 price and said what the hell.
Glad I did! For a single IPA, the nose is a lot like a smooth DIPA. Great hop presence, nice citrus flavor on the mouth...may have found a new go-to, cheap bomber.
    Gotta love NorCal:
Great sports franchises (save the Raiders)
    Great weather
    Great beer!

[IMG] This Sunday I am assembling parts or props for my Halloween costume as a Feral Cat Trapper.
I don't think the trappers actually have "uniforms", it's a volunteer-led drive; but maybe it's an excuse to wear my first ever pair of coveralls I scored at a bargain.
Props obvs include toy cats. Preferring 2nd-hand thrift stores, this has been a disappointing quest; mainly because around here anyway, thrift shops avoid used plush toys or any toys for that matter anymore, there's too much risk with germs and/ or lead poisoning, a nuisance I guess to sanitize each & every plush dropped off.
So I've had to make-over toy dogs into cats, these plush dogs showed up at a few stores I visited.
Add a toy cage or two I had laying around and a makeshift net from a flyswatter w/ the middle cut out to add netting from those avocado packs, upper left -- and, well at the very least I'll spook people with my creepy cats in their Dr. Moreau-esque configurement. Right now I'm surgically altering w/ needle & pliers the third dog-->cat.
(I know the trappers don't "net" those wild cats. It's a prop! Srsly, the more I read about the complicated aspects of "catching cats" the more I respect their efforts.)
The beer label is blurry here: it's "Sabbath" by Devils' Backbone, a black IPA and I think I've had better, but I'm not complaining. Cheers~

I've had two feral cats choose me as their inferior sentient entity. They still have me, and I learn daily about my human failings. Honestly, the two cats that I have came up top me while we were walking dogs, and they walked home with us. These nuts are my real friends1

    New Mail Imperial Stout Sunday!

Today was a good day. Work day went by fast, weather was perfect. Now I'm at home drinking this new Imperial Stout courtesy of @SomethingClever this is the new brew.

Let me begin by describing this here beer. This brew pours accordingly to the style, Nice deep black body, khaki head and lacing. Alcohol legs are present. Looks pretty legit. Time to get the fumes. Dense roasted malts and some brown sugar sweetness. Deep inside is notes of vanilla bean, cocoa spice and booze tickles the nose hairs. Smells pretty par to the style. The flavor is just as great and intense. First waves of roasted malt goodness with residual sugars to help accent the roast. Nice chocolate flavors with a subtle vanilla cream flavor, tastes like an Oreo Cookie that was soaked in Rum and Coffee. This finishes dry, boozy with a lingering bitterness. Aftertaste is of Cookies and tobacco. The feel on this brew is full bodied, creamy smooth with soft carbonation.

Overall: I like this better than I thought I was going to. I really thought it was going to be like Vanilla Shake's ultimate end. Yet this is hella enjoyable. The booze is actually a part of the beer to make it balanced. It's not an out of place booze that leaves it too dry with alcohol burn. The bitterness is lingering which I'm ok with, yet one might say it's too abrasive. The rest of the flavors are very enjoyable each with a story to tell. This brew is recommended.

    Grade: A-

Thank You @SomethingClever for this brew.

    Cheers New Beer Sunday Crew!

What's up nbs nation. My new beer is yet another offering from Long Ireland brew co. Their wet hopped ipa.
This is a switch up from their previous wet hop release which was a pale ale. Again, the concept is pretty cool. Using fresh wet hops from a few of the local hop farms that have sprouted up here.

A deep amber pour with a slight nose of hops and malt. Hoppy burn on the start with lots of malts on the finish. There is to much malt or something and the hops really become muted. Seems to have a somewhat dirty mouth feel/taste to it. This is just flat out bad and I would give it low 3's or lower,
