Anybody ever have to file an insurance claim involving lost beer? I was broken into yesterday and the dude had quite a party with a lot of my beer. Although he poured most of it on the floor. Didn't steal anything, just drank/poured out a ton of beer and some bourbon. Made a pretty good mess.

I think any damage, cleanup etc to your residence would be covered by homeowners, but you'd have to hit the deductible. As to lost beer, you could try to present an inventory and approximate value, but I'm thinking the Ins Co would want some verification, like photos of labels to justify more than what a suitcase of Bud would retail for.

Damn, that situation sucks. I can't imagine what kind of motive that person would have. Sorry.

But yeah, sounds like homeowners would be your best bet if you have it, since it was a break-in.

Instead of in this forum, that is a question to ask your insurance agent since he/she knows what coverage your homeowner/renter policy has. As mentioned above, keep in mind that a deductible will probably apply, so if your estimate of the damage plus the loss of the beer does not exceed the deductible, then you are self-insuring your loss. (Sorry for your loss.)

Also to be considered: if there is any beer left, what is the chance that your culprit will return for more? If you are in a marginal neighborhood, then consider some extra protection like an alarm system before it happens again. If you are a renter, and it is a marginal neighborhood, I'd be putting more money into a higher rent at a better place than to be putting it into more beer.

My parents house got broken into, and among other things, they took a couple cases of wine. They had to put in a guess of how many bottles and an approximate value. Wouldn't think beer would be much different, though like others have said, take photos of the label and have a good store write a letter with prices, so they won't think it's a 30-rack.

I live in a decent neighborhood. It's a rental. This was a random homeless dude that was probably trying to get out of the rain. He probably walked in and thought he had hit the jackpot. He was still here when I got home and was totally fucked up on spray paint and good beer. I was super pissed, but ended up having pity on the guy. He's obviously had a much harder life than me. That being said, I will prosecute this to the full extent of the law. He's in jail now.

I've spoken to the insurance company and am currently itemizing everything that was lost as well as it's replacement value. Since I don't have receipts for anything that I had, I don't know what they'll do. I've got pictures of all the damage to include with my itemized list. Deductible is low and is less than what I estimate the value of everything lost to be. Nothing super whale-ish lost, but good enough beer to be a pain in my ass. Really just checking to see if anyone had had anything similar happen and what the end result was for them. Obviously I'd like to get a check to cover it all, but I know better than to expect that to be the reality.

This was in addition to getting rear ended on the way home from work that day.

Also the guy ate an entire jar of peanut butter I had recently bought.

    Thanks for the responses folks!

You are a better man than me! If someone trashed my house and I caught them, well I would not have dealt with it as calmly as you.

There would have certainly been some smack laid down before the Po-po got there. Most of the good stuff here I've had to trade for which as most here know is a process and a pain in the ass sometimes.

Today must have at least been a better day though, so there's some happy thoughts for ya.

Yes. Makes me wonder if this is a real scenario or a bit of cost-benefit reconnaissance.

Just messing. That's a shitty thing to come home to.

I'm not so sure the guy would have ever made it to jail had I walked in on this situation in my home. You mention he "walked in." Was the door not locked? More importantly, did he drink any whalez?

You are in a rental property and have renters insurance, good for you. Will the landlord allow a dog and/or an alarm system? If not, you need to better secure your valuables. A locked refrigerator and/or cellar might work.

To answer your question is simple YES its included in your current homeowners insurance most likely had about 5 grand worth of my cellar aswell as paintings and jewelry done off with about 3 years ago and i was able to file it all in the claim with bottle amounts and aprox. value per bottle etc.

I didn't catch them in the act though my friend. thats what my desert eagle at my hip is for brother MO FO wouldn't of walked out of my house he'd of been found 8 miles down river 2 years later with cement blocks tied to his feet MUWHAAHAHAHAH BEER FOREVER!

So, the front door was most definitely locked. The guy forced his way into the house. I considered introducing him to my fists for a second, but this guy was so much smaller than me, and so wasted, that I really think I may have killed him. Definitely getting an alarm put in. I wish I could get a dog, but between work and playing in a band I don't have the necessary time for a dog. Or at least as much time as I feel I would need. I don't have a family and I live by myself, if either of those were different, or if the guy were bigger and more sober then I probably would have gone after him before calling the police. Regardless, he's in jail now.

There were no whalez drank or poured out. Those are in a different location in the house. He still got into some decent stuff, but I have multiples of most of it, except for a couple things that I'm sure I could trade for if I wanted. Nothing too big.

Everything has been submitted to insurance now, so we'll see what happens.

That's awful. We had our house broken into a week before my wedding. Both my wife and I were sleeping upstairs and she uses a sound machine. I actually had the booze, wine and beer inside my house. Luckily they didn't think the alcohol or my collection was valuable... Although all my electronics, personal items, cash, and my change dish with the change in it were stolen. I really liked that dish too... I also lived in a decent area. Insurance covered most of everything with ease. It really was the mental issue of someone breaking your back door lock and entering your house that messes with you. Needless to say we had an alarm the next day.

I had my cellar robbed several years ago now. Some basic tips. Keep a fairly up to date list of what you have down there. If you can keep receipts great. Take pictures. Lots of pictures. Also let your insurance company know that you have a cellar. Make sure they list it on the policy. I got a nice payout from my insurance company. I gave them all the pricing and they accepted it all.

A semi-well known regional beer blogger/writer/industry person was having some remodeling done on her house a few years ago. While she and her husband were at heir jobs, the contractors had a hell of a party with her cellar. Really sucks.
