More for us who don't think a barrel is life's answer to good beer

Yup. I actually think that this years vintage that is aged in wine barrels is fantastic. The wine barrel really makes The Abyss taste the best that I have ever drank fresh. It think it will age exceptionally well also.

I agree with this. It's alway's at least a couple months plus old. I only drink it now if I see it on tap.

I recall that there used to be a lot of threads and talk about DirtWolf... Of course, hype can't remain when over 4,800 people have rated it on BA.

Just tried a sculpin ipa and it was delicious even though it was a 16 dollar 6 pack.

I agree with you. But Sculpin normally costs $14.99 in Chicago and for that reason it will sit. Plenty of other kinds of awesome for $5 less.

They drop it to ten or so and keep sending us cans...this will be my go to beer.

    And therein lies the rub.

If its just sitting on the shelves anyway (I can't drink it all solo) I'm not sure increased production will make a difference :slight_frown:

If you can trade some NG 750's (Belgian Red, Rasp Tart, Serendipity, Strawberry Rhubarb) for Westy, go for it. 3:1, 4:1 max. Those are all shelf beers- Westy is only a shelf beer if you live in an area where it gets distributed (not Wisconsin, usually).

One would assume that with increased production would come decreased price, if only because the cost of ingredients should go down when you increase your bulk purchase. Either BP's ingredients prices haven't come down or they just don't want to lower the price (which means it's selling at a rate acceptable to them and their distributors.)

I work for a local retailer in Chicago. After talking with their new Midwest Rep he said the price will not come down. It is simply too expensive of a beer to make to lower the price currently. The good news is we will star seeing regular shipments of grapefruit and habanero Scuplin.

Where I work we move five cases a week. The cases I get are just as fresh as any other west coast IPA.

Unfortunately down in Southern Illinois it doesn't seem to move as fast. I don't know if its the price or what

A $16 sixpack in $/oz equivalency comes out to a bomber that costs $4.89.

    Is it cheap? No.

Is it a much smaller travesty than the prices paid for some other beers? I believe so.

never had Westy 12, but definitely agree on Abyss. One of my all time favorites. Weird for me to see it mentioned, but I suppose thats because I'm still all about it come that time of year

This thread has made me want to pick up some Celebrator. I haven't had it in years, but I used to love that stuff(probably still would).

On the Sculpin point: I go to the store and there's Sculpin (a super tasty brew) @ $16
    Stone IPA $11
    Fresh Squeezed $10
Odell's IPA often on sale for $9
All of them super delicious, and it would probably take a blind taste test to find out which one I really like best, so Sculpin will usually get a pass from me.

We don't get Ballast Point here, but if we did I would feel the same way. You have to be a truly exceptional beer for me to want to pay that much a six. I might do it once to try the beer, but it could never be a go-to which I feel is the goal for most IPA's under 8%.

I think there is actually a lot of competition with beer. You have to really have something special to make me consider not just buying a 12 pack of Torpedo or another 4 of 16oz cans of Two-Hearted.
