We don't get too many from SD. Kind of a beer wasteland, esp. considering which part you may live (it is a big state). Anyway, welcome

OK, I need some help here. I just realized that the next beer I enter on Untappd is #1000. Thanks to @Kurmaraja, I've got options (and, I owe him some MFing beer!). The options are:

Bell's Batch 9000, which I have had before, so wouldn't count for NBS.

Hair of the Dog Doggie Claws, 2006. Which, IIRC (but, I drink, so...), I've had before, but haven't ever entered here or Untappd.

    Saint Arnold Divine '14.

I'm leaning towards St. Arnold, but, I'm gonna take some cheese and crackers, and a beer, on the porch for a bit. Y'all decide for me. Thanks!.

So, the best radio station ever, WXPN Philadelphia, uses the last little lick of that song as their "tag" during station ID's. Thanks for the post!

Drinking Local-ish this evening. Evolution is a Brewery I discovered very quickly after moving out to MD, and everything I have had has been pretty solid. My favorites thus far include their Lot No.3 & 6, Exile ESB, Lucky 7 Porter, and Rise Up Stout (Great Stuff!)...Tonight I'm enjoying their Pumpkin Ale.

The nose features the traditional pumpkin beer spices one comes to expect...cinnamon, clove, nutmeg...along with a nice sweet malt. Smells great, nothing overbearing. Taste follows suit but in a much subtler fashion. Nice pumpkin pie spices, malty sweetness and subtle earthy/spicy hop character on the finish.

A nice take on a Pumpkin Ale. Very subtle all around...and sometimes that a great thing for this style.

    Happy NBS!

    Happy New Lager Sunday!

It's time for me to end my whiz-bang busy weekend, and what better way than with a well-earned beer. We managed to juggle holdng a two-day yard sale with entertaining a close friend yesterday afternoon into the wee hours. Junk was sold, games were played, Oktoberfests were consumed, steaks were grilled, and sleep was lost; but in the end, there was success on all fronts.

I couldn't resist this one when I saw it- it's a Czech-brewed Imperial Pilsner, Craft-Boom by Explosion Brewing
    [IMG]

The nose starts with a generous hit of saaz hops, but that quickly gives way to noticeable butterscotch notes by the way of diacetyl. The body is full and soft, but that is undermined quickly by the harshness of the diacetyl melding with a lingering bitterness. The effect is jarring. Mid-palate brings dried apricots and Werthers Originals, while hay-like hop flavors come on late. Nothing is really working here- a lot of these flavors don't seem out of place in a Bo Pils, but the proportions are all wrong and what should be harmonious has become a series of clashes. I was really looking forward to this one, too...

I'm not enjoying it, and I'm not finishing it either. I'll go get a nice Spaten Oktoberfest to relax and close out the weekend. This one gets an overall C- (2.25), which isn't good enough for my needs right now.

You folks have a good one. Cheers!

Beautiful weekend in these parts. Spent yesterday in Tuscaloosa for the Bama vs A&M game with my Dad, and after some yard work this afternoon, I was ready for a new beer.

Tonight's choice is Old Numbskull from Alesmith. Barleywine's are one of my favorite styles, and I had heard good things about Alesmith so I had high hopes when I cracked this one open. Boy does it deliver. This is one of my favorite American style barleywines. Nice mix of sweet malts and a big hop punch. Reminds me in a lot of ways to Old Guardian.

    New Belgian Pumpkin

Wrapped up movie night and got the boys to bed.

A really solid pumpkin ale from the local Belgian style brewery. It really mixes the qualities of a sour and a pumpkin ale and makes for a very drinkable brew (usually pumpkin beer is a one and done).

    I'd go St. Arnold.

Not voting 9000 strictly because I've had it (think I still have 4 in the basement). Doggie Claws seems like something to crack post-Thanksgiving dinner or over the holidays. That leaves the St. Arnold. But...don't necessarily listen to me.

    New Style Sunday

Great week here. Managed to live another year. Enjoyed about a dozen new brews thanks to some brewery hopping Friday. Got to revisit Columbus Brewing Co. Bohdi DIPA. With my recently newfound love for the style, I can honestly say that it is just a hair behind Pliny. Also, finally got into my tree stand to do some bowhunting this weekend. (pic of the quickly fading colors below). Didn't have any new beers for today other than some big, expensive, high test bombers, but one of my brothers brought me a 4 pack, so I have a last minute entry. Before that, some more random pics.

First time with aging a can. It was fantastic. Actually enjoyed more. Have 1 left to try next year.

Definitely a different beer. Distinct flavor, sweet, some honey, citrus, flowery - but no hops, and a very acurately described dry wine-like finish. Not going to seek these out, but was not unenjoyable either. More details below

So I made a typo up top. It
s gruit not Fruit style beers we had. And I think that means herbs. The herbal qualities of the beers we tried were just terrific. They did the same thing for beer that hops do. They add herbal, spice, bitterness dryness. Some of the herbs were so cool and fresh and even minty. I am kind of glad I made that typo because now I get to tell you about some more beer.

The traditional gruit was a bit sticky.. It was called them bones and had a taste like licorice. Lie an herbal clear liquer. There was another traditional gruit that had juniper berries heather tips and was so light and woody. They also had an IPA called gansta which was sweet fruity and smelled so fresh. Soft malt, sweet with a light lemon peel and a good bitter. Anyway I am on someone else's stuff so that's all for now. Tonmorrow is my brew day and the end of my beer journey.

    Cheers!

This helped ease the pain from that Giants loss :slight_frown:
The more sour beer I try, the more I enjoy the style.
The problem with them is how damn expensive they are! (This ran me $13 for a 12.7 oz bottle)
But it was definitely worth it..wasn't super sour and I didn't pick up much cherry flavor at all but it was a very enjoyable wild ale. Wish I had another bottle

Good evening NBS! Hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend. I brewed a Scottish 90/- today and took my Mosaic/Hull Melon IPA out of the keezer to be racked to keg tomorrow. I just made a new recipe up today. Making a bourbon oak aged Barleywine to be aged on Wild Turkey soaked cubes for 6 months. Also thinking about another lager, probably a dunkel or vienna to lager out for 2 months while my Helles keg disappears. I am brewing full capacity right now :grinning: (more than ever before)

    New brews:

This is a good and pleasant amber ale. Taste of grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, toast, biscuit, light caramel, floral, grass, and light pine. Fair amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish. Well balanced hop and malt flavors. Very smooth and crisp finish with some lightly creamy/stickiness in the mouthfeel. Enjoyed it thoroughly. 3.68
    [IMG]

This was awesome! I absolutely loved the aromas; really vibrant and balanced notes of yeast, spice, and malt complexity. Taste was really similar: Raisin, plum, fig, berry, licorice, chocolate, cocoa, toast, dark bread, clove, pepper, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Good earthy yeast spiciness on the finish. Great balance of the really bready/roasted malt flavors along side the yeast/spice; just damn impressive. Smooth and crisp finish with a fairly creamy/bready type mouthfeel. Just fracking delicious, I might actually go buy a full 4 pack of this. 4.2
    [IMG]

This is a fantastic Belgian style imperial stout! Tastes of big raisin, plum, fig, date, licorice, molasses, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, toffee, with some light-moderate vanilla/oak/bourbon noticeable and a fair bit of earthy/peppery yeast as well. Extremely well balance malt and yeast flavors and extremely smooth to sip on for 11.8%. Nice fairly full bodied mouthfeel, very creamy and slightly slick. Damn I totally love this. Belgian stouts need to be made more often IMO. 4.33

Bout to wrap up the day of my lazy butt nailed to the couch watching NASCAR and football. Chillin it out right now watching Peyton work his magic once again. Got this one from @tulpenhiney, very nice:
    Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron

Poured a very dark brown, almost black, with a big two finger thick tan head. The aroma is nice, with dark fruit, vanilla, roasted malt, chocolate and lots of booze. The taste is also lots of dark fruit, vanilla, followed by dark chocolate and some coffee. The alcohol is pretty well masked up front, but really stands out in the back end, along with some nice oaky type flavors- very complex, but nicely balanced with no one flavor overpowering the others. The beer has a medium/thick mouthfeel, just enough to linger on the palate nicely. Overall, this is an excellently made beer- very complex, but nicely balanced.

    Prost BAs!

Fuck Brat Punkelowski!! I saw his dad race a few times back in the day, and he was tough. Wouldn't give an inch, wouldn't knock somebody out of the way just to get around them. Great racer. I can't see what Roger Penske sees in the twerp.

I hear ya, I can't stand the punk either- Matt Kenseth's my driver so it was really galling to see him win today- although Matt advanced to the elimination round. Brat K's made a lot of enemies along the way, wouldn't be surprised to see some payback coming in the near future
