I swear, every time I go to the liquor store, I tell myself I'm just going to get a 6-pack of something around $8.99 or $9.99 and get out.

Then I decide to browse, just to "look" and then I see they have a bomber of something great from FFF or Pipeworks and I convince myself if I don't pick this up now, I might not see it again, so I get that. Then I see they have 4-packs of Breakfast Stout and get excited so I get one of those.

So my original plan was to walk in, get a 6-pack for $10 and walk out, and instead, I walk out with 5 beers and spend almost $30!

I'm working on budgeting, but it's tough. I've got my store holding a 6-pack of Sculpin for me to pick up tomorrow, and that's already $15 so I've got to show some restraint!

I really felt good about myself the other day getting the Sierra Nevada Snow pack for $16. First time in awhile I've paid under $1.50 per beer!

I actually don't have that problem because I don't have any FFF or Pipeworks beers staring at me while I attempt to make a sound decision on some economically friendly beers. However, I will concur when it comes to Breakfast Stout. I bought a 4 pack last week not knowing that I already had a 4 pack in the fridge.

Preach it brother. My wife and I are both in Masters programs and can't work much, so we budget everything. Craft beer is painful on a budget! I am about to "spurge" on a VT trip and I am mourning the FBS I won't be able to get.

I hear you there. For the past 2 years I averaged about $40 each trip to the beer store, that worked out to be about 6 beers a day. I've recently cut that down to 6 beers a week. It's better for my brain and wallet. The struggle is real!

    Yes. I have this problem.

Felt the need to go find one more Pumpkinator so that I could drink the 2 I have left and cellar one for next year. Called Whole Foods and got them to hold it for me.

Well, I get there and they have: 1 more Mirror Mirror on the shelf. Love that Barleywine, so I had to pick it up. They also had one more Deep Ellum Numb Comfort, another Barleywine. Decided I should grab it to hold on to for a while.

    So I walked out spending:
    8.99 on Pumpkinator
    16.99 on Mirror Mirror
    11.99 on Numb Comfort.

Yeah, it's awful. I have an issue with beer I really like that I don't see too often. I feel like I need I need to pick it upor I'll miss my chance!

Why can't they just make a ton of the beer I like so I never feel that way haha.

I usually have inner struggles likes my fellow BA's seem to experience as I scroll down this thread, as in : I'll walk into my local craft retailer and just feel totally dumbfounded by the sheer volume of awesome items and like-minded individuals. List or not, the soul-pummeling choices take way longer than you always intend. This is even 3x the trainwreck of social skills and decision making if I've previously had a bit of the hops' also widely embraced and adored cousin

The explosion of Sours, BA stouts, and lots of other great beers only available in bombers, plus trading to keep up with all the great brews being released by smaller breweries with more narrow distribution isn't helping the monetary strain of this already expensive hobby.

I used to have this problem. Not so much anymore. I just got tired of that whole 'what's new this week? cuz I gotta get it' kinda thing I was doing for a while. I also got tired of the absurd bomber prices. So in a sense, I just kinda stopped playing the game. Started keeping it simple. I still buy bombers occasionally - especially when I'm out of the state, but I just try to keep it simple. There's so much good stuff out there that you don't have to worry about missing out on something. Most likely there's something just as good further down the shelf or coming out next week.

All the time. That's one reason I have so much damn beer in the fridge. It's not a bad things at all, I just always buy more than I intend because I figure it won't be there next time.

I guess I am lucky to have such a problem, but living in Chicago does really make it hard to walk into a bottle shop and not spend $40-50 every time through the doors.

I try to limit my visits to Monday's and Friday's. Well because beers after work on Monday and Friday are glorious!

I had adopted the same mentality until I got Into the trading game. After completing the ones I already have going hopefully will return to it.

I try to not spend much, and I've done a good job avoiding bombers for the most part, I just hate that some of my favorite beers are so expensive.

    Stuff like
    Sculpin
    Breakfast Stout
    Furious
    Coffee Bender

    Are all so expensive!

At least Fresh Squeezed IPA is cheap and once Celebration Ale comes out, that's nice and cheap too!

You could save on things like Sculpin and Breakfast Stout.

Stone and Lagunitas have fairly priced IPAs.
Narwhal is a great shelf stout.

There are several other, readily available and very quality beers to help save on the wallet.

Just get Sculpin and Bfast Stout every now and again. I know, easier said than done.

There are many great options that don't cost an arm and a leg. I drink those most of the time and save the expensive stuff for an occasion. Usually that involves sharing it with my sons or brew club buddies. Not a problem as a great beer always tastes better with good company even if you don't get to drink it all.

Haha yeah man. I've done a few trades, and I really don't see myself doing it again. It's a fun and cool thing to do, but goddamn is it expensive. Unless you're trading some high end stuff, I really don't get it. It's not for me. Although maybe if I was making a lot more money, I might get into it.

I know the feeling...I will walk in with the intention of purchasing a 4 or 6 pack and a half hour later - $50 or more is sitting at the checkout counter......And sometimes its worse when they have a full case of let's say Breakfast Stout....$$$$$

Yeah if you add the shipping costs onto the beer price and look at that number as what your spending on the beer you're recieving its really nuts. I dont want to discourage anyone as its alot of fun but the expense shouldn't be ignored.
