So. I was on Craigslist trying to trade beer with someone. I get a "mass reply" promoting this website called Brewdex.com. Apparently it is a price guide for craft beer. I'm guessing they go off of recent eBay listings. In my opinion this could screw up the craft beer scene more then it's screwed up already. I saw something like this happen with the sports card hobby when eBay started booming. People started valuing their sports cards from eBay prices vs. the Beckett price guide that came out monthly. Well when people wanted to trade they would use the price guide value when it worked in their favor or the "eBay Value" (recent listing endings) other times. I see this starting to happen in the beer trade. People sometimes trade for $4$, sometimes they'll say " bro, that bottle is selling for 'X' amount of dollars on eBay" , or sometimes they pull the bottle count card. I guess it all factors into a trade, however...what happened to "I have this bottle and want that bottle, let's trade?"

I just don't see this website helping out much...possibly causing more problems. Just my opinion...yours?

That's a whole lot of insight on the beer trading scene since March 22, 2012.

The game done changed since early spring.

@Shogo - now why do you have to go and set off Widespread Panic?

This site is stupid. Not only are the price valuations rediculous but their claim to be a universal benchmark for the craft community is ludicrous. That's not what the craft community is about. And if you argue otherwise then you don't truly get the craft community.

Anyone who uses this site to value beers in a trade is an idiot. Beer trading is not about getting a good price value for your beer (shipping alone cuts into any of those margins). Beer trading is about things like getting beers you're unable to get in you area, to try something new, to make new connections, to be part of a community, and most of all to get a beer that you want because you want it, not because of it's value. If you're looking for something otherwise then go hit up eBay.

if people in the trading/craft scene can keep some sort of reasonable perspective on what a beer is worth, this shouldn't have too much of an effect. once again, THIS is why you need to establish regular trading partners.

Based on this particular forum, with its consistent focus on apparent and relative values of beers (both in terms of money and other beers) as though an absolute value exists, I'd say this site is pretty damn close to BeerAdvocate, sadly...

This website is great! It got me thinking about all the stuff on my desk that I can sell. BM me if you're interested.

Half used pad of yellow sticky notes - $35
Half used bottle of hand sanitizer - $45
Stack of business cards from random suppliers I'll never talk to again - $85

If you're on the fence about any of these I can throw in an expired 2-pack of DayQuil to seal the deal.

This site sux. I was just taking a quick look and they cant even get thy style right on beers.

they have DFH Faithful as an Imperial Stout.
    35
This is from the DFH website (and I have had it so its no dam Stout)
Faithful ale is a Belgian-style Golden fruit forward and 20 IBUs

This is just one of many mistakes I found. God I hope these guys aren't making a profit with this site. Treebs that GIF is disturbing

Sad, but true. I was trying to negotiate a trade with somebody a month ago and I offered up more than $4$ with similar bottle counts/release and he basically told me that he saw what the beer he had was going for on eBay and that it wasn't worth it to him. I'm starting to see this more and more lately and it's unfortunate.

    Really.

Can't believe this is the new normal. Argue against this and you will get unsolicited mail telling you that you're being negative.

Lucky for me I have great trading partners, a vibrant distribution in my area, great local geek friends, I make lots of homebrew, and new fantastic local breweries are opening near to me.

Hope I get to reply to the first person who tries quoting from this "guide" to make a trade on the forum here.

I think we will get the occasional ass-hat that isnt here for the community and to maximize profits. But if the true community traders stop trading with them they will only be left to trade with themselves. Which will make Ebay more attractive the them and hopefully they will leave. (wishful thinking I know)

I have not traded much but I have started looking into some trades where I sensed the trader was more about the deal than the beer and i backed out.

That's pretty funny since its been two years since the release and it still isn't sold out at $9.99. I had no idea I was shipping a $70 bottle as an extra in a trade. Like others have said, this is just stupid.
