First off, sorry to make another pricing thread, we all know they're everywhere. I am a bit curious about others thought about this one though.

Sun Kings Bourbon Barrel Batch 666 has been advertised through multiple social media sites as $15 / 2 pack for weeks. Having won a silver medal this year I have no questions as to quality, taste, etc. Today they announced the price is actually $25 / 2 pack, and they are saying the original price listing was a typo that had been overlooked for weeks.

By no means am I encenuating malicious intent, but it does seem suspicious. I consider myself a fan of Sun King, however I am having a hard time standing behind them with their pricing of this reserve series (even before this). I'm curious if I'm the only one questioning this or if my thoughts are in line with anyone/everyone else?

I'll let you know that you're definitely not the only one who questioned this. There were several lengthy discussions I saw happening as a result of this.

$15 for 2 14oz cans was already too high imo. I've never had anything from them that would warrant $25 for 28 oz. I wish them good luck in all their future endeavors and all that happy horseshit, but I'm quickly finding myself completely over them. I'm happy to support Outliers, Bier and Black Acre instead.

Really, $25 for 24oz of beer? Are they adopting the FFF business model now?

I agree that it's shady as hell. On the occasion that I have bought their special releases I have usually split the 2-pack with a buddy, but $25 is way too much. Since getting into craft beer I have supported SK less and less as time goes buy because they just don't get me excited. I believe that SK has a niche and that niche is the person transitioning from Miller, Coors, Bud, etc. to craft. Their main staples have more flavor that those but it's nothing that is in your face, which is good for a person in transition.

Now for the more important question: Our team won a state championship in high school, can I go ask my boss for a raise?

Read it all, I understand their points, and I still think it's vastly overpriced. And while the Alumi-Tek cans are nice and all, it seems like a poor choice to implement such a system if the labor and yield are so skewed.

    Those people have:

    1) Never been burned by SK special releases
    2) Have more disposable income than common sense

I'm not saying that it's dumb to spend a decent amount of coin on beer, because I have and still do, but it's typically on beers/breweries that have proven themselves worthy of my hard earned money.

I thought Whip Fight was $25 a two pack, but I just looked it up and it was $15. I think that was very reasonable for how amazing that beer was. $25 for a two pack is a little different. However, one of my favorite breweries, Jackie O's, sells 375ml bottles of BA beers for $12 a piece...so considering there are about 6 more ounces in this two pack, I guess it's not that bad all things considered.

I thought this was kind of shitty for them to say. "Hey guess what, if you don't want to spend it, plenty will" That's basically saying fuck it we'll price our shit how we want. GABF has apparently gotten to their heads. They should realize 99% of their business is locals that like their sub-par every-day beers like Wee Mac and Osiris.

I think we are going about this all wrong. We need to talk this one up into an Instawhale.

As the guy that made the pricing error on the art, I can tell you that it was indeed an error, and not a secret plan to fuck over people. We know how this looks, and that's why we offered the lengthy explanation of what went into the price of the beer.

We hope you'll buy it, and we know you'll enjoy it if you do. We realize this pricing is not palatable to everyone, but this is what we feel the beer is worth.

Well @mikeat, don't you think the classy thing for Sun King would be to have just kept it at $15 since they sent out that pricing 4 different times already. Now Sun King just looks like jerks who are saying "Because we got an award, we think you should pay more for this beer."

Maybe you should look for a new job at a company that wouldn't hang you out to dry so they can charge more than what they originally decided on @mikeat...

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one in this line of thinking. The price is what it is, while I personally don't care to spend that much money on this product (medals say very little in my book), it doesn't bother me that some people will.

@mikeat I commend you for owning up to a mistake on a public forum. No one here is blaming you at all for the pricing, but since you're the only employee standing up - you are unfortunately getting the heat.

This is just an example of a bad business practice that is definitely going to be remembered by many, and will (IMO) hurt the company more than it will help.

Given the math, using SunKing's own number (400 units), the net difference is going only be $4,000. If Clay is running Sun King on razor thin margins where $4K makes a differnce, then there are bigger problems. With $16 for 4 cans of Fist full of Hops, I doubt margins are really an issue.

All I'm saying is once the mistake was recognized, the call for most businesses would have been easy... "leave it at $15 for our fans."

I'm pretty sure those Aluminum screw tops of Coors Light I get at the ballpark are filled at a faster rate than 6 cans/minute.
