I recently conducted a trade with a guy I met in an online nerd group for a seperate hobby, it was his first trade. He's from Massachusetts and calls his liquor store a 'Packy'. I didn't know they called it that. @markdrinksbeer can you confirm?

Anyway, the reason I'm posting is to ask about other regional beer slang. Also curious if anyone can tell me where the term 'packy' comes from.

Also, the theme of this thread feels vaguely familiar, so if this thread's been done before, I apologize. Feel free to nuke it if that's the case.

Packy is definitely a MA term!

Edit- short for package store i think (convenience store, where you can get beer)

In Philly beer store is a Distributor, and Liquor store is just how it sounds.

For NJ I just called it the liquor store or whatever the name was, didn't have anything special I called it.

Here in CA its "I'm going to go outside...and buy beer"

We use "offie" as in off license, our version of liquor stores

That makes sense, seeing as the industry term for such a place is 'off-premise' or 'off-sale' (where it is purchased and taken away before consuming).

Ha - this guy kept calling them Pint bottles. I suppose it's pretty close to an imperial pint, yeah?

Here in Ottawa "A two four" is another term for a case of beer (24 bottles/cans) as in "I'm picking up a two four of Molson Ex, eh?" :grinning:

An imperial pint is a little over 19 US ounces, so somewhat close. I just don't think he knew what else to call them. He has good taste in beer he just does't know all the finer details.

I'd never heard bomber until I was on BA. Still haven't heard a non-BA person use the term bomber in real life, it's always 22s.

This - plus using the MA "slang" mentioned in the OP isn't going to go down too well in the UK either...

Anyone else ever heard "bat and a ball" for "beer and a shot"? I heard someone from Boston say this once.

I don't think the term "package store" is used around here at all (unless the people I talk to are idiots and someone else wants to correct me). It's just the "liquor store" or "state store".
I've heard it north of Philly, and south of Philly, but never here.

edit: semi-confirmed with my roommate. He looked at me like I was insane.

In NYC we call the liquor store "the stupid f**king store that can't sell beer"

Around here it's either just the liquor store or "party store."

"Package store" is (or was) also used in a number of other states - Texas, Mississippi, Wisconsin and Oklahoma are some I recall. The diminutive slang "Packie" I've only heard used in New England.

And the similar legal term of "Package Goods" for bottled/canned alcoholic beverages is used in many other states. Here's a example from NJ's ABC Handbook:
