Yet another new barrel-aged beer announcement coming from Sierra Nevada, who have been killing it lately on that front. This time, it's bourbon barrel-aged Torpedo. This beer will clock in at 8.5%abv and will be packaged in 750ml bottles. It looks like this was/will be brewed and bottled at both the Chico, CA and Mills River, NC locations, so I assume it will be available on both coasts. No word on release date or distribution details yet, but here is the label description:

"Our year-round hop bomb Torpedo Extra IPA received special treatment, spending nearly three months in bourbon barrels into which we stuffed fresh Citra and Pacifica hops. While Torpedo's normal aroma assault evolved during its hibernation, it emerged equally bold. The rich barrel character and fruity hops intertwine for a dynamic brew whose mango and peach nose precedes coconut and vanilla sweetness. The smoothness of our Barrel-Aged Torpedo belies its might and depth, so sip slowly among good company."

As long as it's not BA Narwhal price (I'm still looking for one), I'll try this. Wonder how it'll compare to Burton Baton.

Never have been too impressed with BA DIPAs, but let's face it...I see this I buy.

Me too, Burton Baton is the only barrel aged IPA that I like, all the others I never quite "got". Still, if I see this I'll try it.

    indeed.

however, i've personally had good results adding woodford reserve outright to torpedo... so i can only imagine actual time in a barrel does nice things.

Cigar City Humidor Series is aged over cedar, it is very good, I could double check but I don't think the DFH BB is bourbon barrel either. I am not so sure how I feel about bourbon barrel age for an DIPA.... But I don't think Sierra would make a drain pour, I will try it. The add of additional hops may make the difference.

DAMN YOU SIERRA NEVADA! DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!

My wallet would really appreciate it if you didn't have a bunch of great stuff coming out. Says the guy who just picked up the 24 bottle Snow Pack...

No kidding! Picked up a few bottles of their wet hopped ale, then a 12er of snow pack, BA maple stout, BA narwhal, 12er celebration and now this?!

I think the key difference here is that Burton Baton is oak aged - not bourbon barrel aged. The oak tends to smooth out the finish and lends a subtle complexity that helps to extinguish a bit of hop and alcohol. This contrasts with a bourbon barrel which instead thrusts in an entirely new and robust flavor dimension with that sweetness and some woodsy tastes. This is just how I perceive the difference and thought would be worth mentioning lest people seek this out with a Burton flavor profile in mind.

Personally I like oak aged DIPAs over bourbon barrel. The two flavor dimensions just don't marry well for my palate.

this scares me. I'm typically not a fan of BA IPAs. I will try it, not sure i'll buy a bottle of it for fear of hating it...

This was only available on draught at the Torpedo Room last year... Something tells me that this is only available at their gift shops (Chico, Berkeley and Mills River). @sierranevadabill

    No kidding!

As much as I love Torpedo and SN, I'd hate to be disappointed by this, since it's an awesome idea, so I'll reserve my opinion for right now. I'll buy one for sure.

Never had a bourbon barrel aged DIPA before, but seems like Founders Doom was well received. I'm in, why not?!

I doubt I will be buying a bottle of barrel aged Torpedo, but I will definitely be trying this one day.
