All said and done, sounds like they spent more on the packaging than the actual beer.

I'll join you on that. One of us buys the 1759 bottle, the other brings 10 single bottles from Total Wine.

honestly, i might buy this as a gift for two good friends of mine. because i think they would really like the beer itself and get a kick out of the packaging, etc, not because i think it will be an awesome beer.

I find 25 ounces to be about a quarter of a serving

I thought Arthur Guinness failed as an ale brewer so switched to Porter. Even then the brewing was done by a London family brought in.

As opposed to special releases only available for a single day because they don't make enough to adequately meet demand and then charge $20+/- a bottle?

To me, it's a price that's worthy of ridicule, especially in conjunction with the packaging, and that's about it. I do know that they are capable of making great beer- which is where I'd put the FES- and I'm sure this will be well made. But, comparatively speaking, I recently got some Traquair House Ale for around $8/500ml, and I can't see this being much better than that. Maybe I'd pay half of what they are suggesting, taking the packaging into account, but it does seem like they are getting a bit greedy here.

If I get it as a gift, however, I'll look forward to savoring it on its own merits.

All those who think this is a new concept - a large format bottle of a "special" brew by a macro brewer, released for the Holidays - don't remember Anheuser-Busch's Budweiser Brew Masters Private Reserve, I guess?

8.5% alcohol by volume, 46-ounce bottle, suggested retail between $10 and $11 for a single, or as a boxed gift set (not shown) that included two fluted glasses for $22. Circa 2005-2007.

Just a slightly more reasonable price .

I sort of remember that one. Was that the 'uncut' high gravity beer, or was it a special all-malt version?

My post did come off as a bit strong, and I don't think the initial supposed price is above criticism. Which is why I sneakily added, "admittedly high" into my post.

My reply wasn't really aimed at your level of critique, yours was more measured. As was @Domingo who fully admits to being the target market, and that he has purchased expensive beer before. To put it simply, I think a lot of initial anger is directed more towards the brewer making the beer, and not the price itself. If a more high profile brewer amongst the Beer Geek crowd did this, the price would be looked at with an inquisitive eye, but I think there would be far less uproar, and most likely many positive comments.

Such as Hill Farmstead, Cantillon, Founders (they overprice special beers routinely, certainly not the same price as the 1759 though)......etc.

If it was as great as this beer, would anyone care? $85 per six pack.

IIRC, there were two recipes - the original was "rumored" to be the non-diluted high gravity Budweiser (based, in part, on the wording of the rear label) but as I recall it, AB later denied that, stating it was a special high gravity, all-malt version of Budweiser.

Then the second recipe (I guess only the '07) was a dopplebock.

No. $36 is usually how much I spend on beer in a month. I could buy 3 six-packs for that much money.

no but not because "ZOMG A MACRO BRWRYE IS MAKEING CRAFTEE BEERZ I WONT DRUNK THEZE"

but because i've only ever spent 35 on one beer and it was BA Speedway

    that said, i am curious

While I'm curious, $35 is out of my price range. My wife won't spend that on a bottle of wine nor I on a bottle of scotch. For that I can buy three 4 packs of FBS or five 6 packs of Satin Solitude. The choice is easy.

also, $35 is more than the price of half a case of Bell's Expedition. I'd rather have 12 bottles of Bell's Expedition...

Try it? Sure, what the hell. Drop $35 bucks? Not a chance. Any knowledgeable member of the craft beer crowd is going to know better and the average beer drinker is never going to pay that much for a bottle of anything. So what exactly do they expect their customer base to be? I'm sure they know more about this than I do, but it seems like a sure loser.
