i've enjoyed the slow progression of this thread from "new brewery, you guys! :grimacing:" to "what's the meaning of life?"

Progression? Beer is the meaning of life. It always has been. I think we started and ended there with this thread. :stuck_out_tongue:

I could not have predicted the direction that this thread would take either. My goal with the initial post was to give the BA community an update about Wolves & People and what we have been up to. We very much appreciate the support we have received from so many of you. Thank you Snowshoes and others for being so passionate about beer. Stay tuned for updates on the NW forum. Cheers!

This is the opposite of what a kickstarter usually is. Almost all of them give you a discount on the final product because you are giving up capitol with the risk and a long wait for the payoff. Crowd funding in no way represents paying more money out of good will.

I have no problem with the expensive society, but to say that we are donating money to them is really dumb.

Thanks for including "others" in there. If your beer turns out to be good, I'll drink it passionately.

I still don't understand why even offer this type of thing if the beers haven't even been brewed, or at the very least been poured at an event. I mean i love good beer but there should be at least some sort of promotional event. Also has it been mentioned what beers will be for distro or if the beers that come with the membership will be brewery only?

I dropped out of the conversation several days ago, and I'm not sure that I missed much....

At the end of the day, W&P sold out of those 75 cellar memberships priced at $350 in three days. So regardless of what you feel about cellar clubs, Kickstarter, investing, or having wolves as pets, the memberships are gone. So were they priced too high? Obviously not. In fact, one could argue they were priced a little low, given the length of the campaign versus the speed at which the memberships sold out.

Now for the people that did purchase a membership (myself included), we'll see whether it turns out to be worth it. The one thing I can guarantee, there will be a discussion here about it...

I think it's probably good to lock this one down until the brewery actually starts selling beer.

    BULLSHIT!

This is actually one of the best threads on the NW page in the 7 years I've been on BA. Lots of great opinions, differing viewpoints, very little name-calling, and the way the road curved, have kept me interested all the way through. Cheers and congrats Everyone!

Plus, now @JordanBrewer will have an extra spark to make great beer. I mean, after all, we don't want to confuse him with Fat Heads, now do we?

I disagree as well. While I mocked the length and topic of this discussion in my last note, I don't understand why this thread would be locked. It contains a discussion about beer, breweries and the business of brewing beer. AND the discussion has been a decent one without a large number of personal attacks or purely troll posts. And as W&P gets closer to a grand opening, I sense the discussion will continue. If BA wants to be a community about beer, then this is the type of legitimate discourse should be encouraged, not discouraged by locking it down. IMHO.

I don't strongly have an opinion on it, but I personally un-watched this conversation a while ago when it seemed like it was just going around in circles with people repeating the same conflicting viewpoints over and over. I think that's the argument to lock it: while it's been interesting we also don't need another 5 pages of people repeating the same things.

    From their facebook page:

"We had some questions about our Cellar Club beers. Glad to help clarify this matter. The first six beers reserved for Cellar Society members will be released only to members and be served at select special events, i.e. private beer dinners and a festival or two (there won’t be much to go around). The second six will be released to Cellar Society members at least one month before going on sale in the tasting room and possibly another retail location or two (as well as certain events). Either way, Cellar Society members are granted first dibs to many of our first releases. Thanks for your support!"

Anyone else more confused now? I thought it was two sets of six beers we were getting...

    Yeah that was my thought.

The seems kind of like the Upland thread (see link above), where even though more could be said, it was kind of tapped out. I do think this has been pretty civil though, barring a few posts by this trollish asshole:

I'm totally stoked for this brewery. Us Oregonian beer enthusiasts are truly a lucky bunch. I passed on the membership though because $350 is 38 Bu Weisses (and 1 Hose) so I think I'll stock up a little more next time I'm at de Garde and not feel as bad about it.

The two longest threads in recent memory in the Northwest forum have been about how Fat Heads will clog our arteries and fail and how Wolves & People are really the wolves of Wall Street with their objectionable financial schemes.

For a part of the country with so many breweries, we don't seem to be welcoming them with open arms.

I appreciate the desire for substance and the realist's skepticism ... but at some point it crosses over to cynicism and negativity. Not that it's on topic - but when has that stopped this thread - but it's curious and interesting to me that "we" seem (based on my limited sampling) a lot less positive and welcoming than the other regional forums.

Probably because I'm soooo cynical, I see this a bit differently.

When I first saw the post about Fatheads, my gut reaction was a "like bringing coals to Newcastle" response. I'm not opposed to them coming (seriously.... when it comes to the availability of good beer, the more the better), but it just struck me as a very, very odd destination selection. The demand for FatHead beers and the IPA/DIPA's in particular is huge in the midwest and East Coast, whereas out in the NW, it's only the real uber beer geeks that tend to know anything about their stuff. Of course if they planned to open a huge brewery with a bottlling and canning line that might supply the entire West Coast, then the move would have made complete sense (which is probably why I initially just assumed this is what they planned to do). However, it sounds like their presence is going to be very localized, with the beer only distributed in the PDX area (if at all). So yeah... my initial reaction was one of puzzlement. Why here? Admittedly, that feeling turned more to one of resentment when we started getting posts from folks out of the area, many of whom have no familiarity with the beer scene here, and yet were quick to assure us that FatHeads would be brewing IPA/DIPA's superior to anything we currently have here in the NW. I'll admit that rankled a bit, especially as I don't believe it for a minute (and as I've actually tried a number of FatHead beers, including Headhunter, and have been to the pub in Pittsburgh several times, and so feel as if I have some basis for my opinion). That being said, I AM looking forward to the opening of the pub, but yeah, you're right... I doubt it's going to be a culinary destination for me and the GF, and my guess is that after a couple of visits, I'll probably want to go back to drinking our completely lame NW beers (including the IPA's and DIPA's made here).

As for the W&P thread... shrug. You really feel that was negative? Assuming it came across that way at all, my feeing is that was probably because one particular poster was so over the top passionate about what a great opportunity this was. I thought most of the responses were pretty level headed... along the lines of "gee, this sounds pretty good, but that's kind of a lot money for beer no one has ever tasted, and that no one even seems to know when it will be made or released."

I just think folks on this forum are passionate about good beer, are pretty opinionated when it comes to the topic, and love to talk about. I don't feel that makes them especially cynical (OK, I admit I am) or negative.
