About new breweries in specific or less welcoming in general? I don't think these two threads are representative in either case, but I see your point better if you're talking about new brewery skepticism. I think that comes with having a more mature market than most other cities/states, but that's not to say we're immune from cynicism either. Is the passion in both these threads because they revolve around an out-of-towner coming to up shop? Maybe, but I think it's more driven by speculating on an unknown commodity rather than distrust or other negative motivations.

I don't spend a ton of time on the other regional forums, but I don't recall seeing any "Visiting..." threads with as much detail as ours updated as frequently as ours. Just one aspect of the whole "welcoming" vibe, but it's evidence we're not totally jaded...

Both Wolves & People and Fat Head's should really say screw you Oregon and come to Washington instead.

Coming down to Portland in 2 weeks - you can bet your ass I'm going to Fat Heads. I'm not going to eat there though, because when I come into town and need to eat, I seek out the Pigeon's, Beast's, and Pine State's of the city. I would never eat at Deschutes/HoTd/Cascade/etc either.

I think we have a healthy mix of pride, localism, cynicism, and hospitality.

i moved a year ago from washington DC. for such a dense metropolitan, they are severely lacking in local breweries, let alone reserve societies. one of the few local breweries, three stars brewing, charged $100 last year for their illuminati society, which basically got you 5 of their normal beers they randomly through into a few random barrels and aged. membership sold out in it's first day.

other regions are desperate for something that has the potential of something like wolves & people. if w&p opened in DC, my bet is they could charge $500/membership and fetch that easily.

TL;DR -- crowd-fund a "future" brewery in DC, offer a reserve society for $500/yr, open swiss bank account, once reserve society sells out deposit all money in swiss bank account, never brew a beer and move to an island of your choice.

Yeah, to my ear the tone in both threads has, on balance, been negative though there has been interesting, often critical discussion in both. It's a rare thread in the Nortwhest forum that goes to 100 posts let alone 200; these places obviously inflamed the passions.

That both are ambitious in scope seems to be a problematic undercurrent for many. Start small, pay dues, grow organically; that's an ok model. But state bold aspirations and that strikes people as pretentious or over-reaching. In some instances I hear echoes of my crotchety grandfather saying things like "who do they think they are" or "too big for their britches."

Fair point. Very welcoming to visitors, small new breweries, etc. I think the default on ambitious new stuff is where it gets less welcoming. Though perhaps there's no pattern and I just think there's one since these 2 things happened close together.

Like I said in the other thread, I'll be checking out Fat Head on my next trip to PDX. But I'm confused by the choice of location too. Chicago/Milwaukee/Indianapolis would have made more sense to me. Maybe it's as simple as being able to write off trips to Portland?

You're going to compare DC prices to Oregon? Really???

    Come on, man!!! :-)

$500 for any sort of reserve society in DC would be like chump change. No one would hestitate for a minute to plunk down that paltry amount of coin.

I was only trying to imply that le Pigeon and Beast (2 of my favorites, anywhere) should be lucky to be mentioned in the same breath as the holy Pine State. Nom nom nom

I'm glad we can agree on food.

Now if only Pine State would crowdfund a Seattle location and offer me exclusive bisquits for $30 a pop we'd have something to talk about.
