Good Morning all you Lascivious Lords of Lagerbier and Apoplectic Aces of Ales, Happy New Beer Sunday.

A windy morning of winter's entry follows a night of howling , with an occasional cold, white particle joining. Yes, let's not use the "S" word for them just yet. The recycle center was a mess of material blown out of roll-offs whose covers were forced by the gales. Good to see my neighbors brave the weather to return materials to the manufacturing stream. As always, thanks to all who spare a few moments to care for our mother.

Certainly a changing of season is perfect for a new beer. Seems it is stout weather, but I will be going for a beer that reminds of summer. First, though, some favorites are chilled and ready to share with @doomXsaloon and @Oldladyfingers . How great it is to be able to just drive to a local brewery and have 8 great beers available for tasting and purchase. One, War Elephant, is in a chilled growler and ready to be enjoyed.

Today is the day, and this is the place. Why not TRY a new beer today? TELL us about it. What do you taste, smell, and think? Do you LOVE it? Why? What do you love about it? Not your "cup of tea "(love mixing metaphors heheh)? What didn't you care for in the beer? Your review or a description that tells a story is greatly appreciated by all. Feel free to hopshot our heads (in homebrew fashion of course ) with linked review, pics, videos, and other world wide web wackiness to enhance our virtual tasting session.

Thanks to everyone for their participation, thus making NBS fresh, fun, and informative.

    ---------

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

Deep red, with a bit of burnt rust color to it, but fairly bright for it's dark appearance. Opaque, with very slow crawling fine bubbles rising. Minimal head creation with a faint tan color, leaving a thin collar on the glass.

Wonderful bouquet on this brew. A great mix of balanced sweet caramel and tangy sour red fruit. Senses like a bowl of sour cherries, and sweet malts. Definitely getting a Flanders like vibe from this for an American brewery for me is kind of rare and very impressive. Sweet taffy throws itself in the mix too. Real nice.

Palate comes off a little more than disappointing. Light malted body and slightly wet, with not a lot of hint of barrel aging character. Some good sweet mix of cherry/raspberry like tones in the mid palate, with a nice controlled finish. Aftertaste comes off more light and hinting towards a summer light brew, which is impressive since this rolls in at a much higher undetectable abv. Slightly flat carbonation, but not giving to the caramel sweetness on the palate. Some mild pepper finish seems to give a bit of menthol heat too.

Overall an ok wild, but feels more like a summer quencher quick thrower, than a malty classic oak wonder.

    look: 4 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5 | Final: 3.73

    -----------

Usually leave the music for WBAYDN but going to be playing a lot of Static-X today...

    RIP Wayne...

Good morning, Dave and the rest of the crew! Well, good afternoon, but since football hasn't started yet, and I haven't gotten to lunch yet, it feels like morning. :stuck_out_tongue:

Today is a beautiful Fall day in Southern New England: bitterly cold, extremely windy, and threatening to continue yesterday's rains. The wind has already snapped off some branches, some dangerously large. At least it could drop some snow on us; we've gone all Fall so far without a sniff, and that's rather anomalous in my experience.

Today's New Stout Sunday features a beer that I've anticipated for quite a while, and can now enjoy courtesy of a fantastic trade extra (one of many; at least one other will be appearing later today, perhaps even here in NBS) courtesy of @aoampm: Evil Twin Imperial Doughnut Break.

    4.53 / +8.6% Review #679

+8.6%? From me??? Yes, I think it's that damn good. It's among the best non-BA imperial stouts I've ever had, and is also among the thickest: think Speedway Stout, FIS, and Ten-FIDY. It's sweet enough to be a dessert stout, but not so sweet that it can't also be a breakfast stout.

This is damn good. Read the review for more notes; there's a lot going on. The photo also doesn't do the beer justice; it's incredibly dark, head included.

    Cheers, NBSers!

New "Belgian Single" Beer Sunday (listed as Bel. Pale Ale)

    Greetings NBSer's,
Start of November pretty much means the end of fall and pre-winter in these parts. Cold and pretty dead looking all around. Some harvesting going on and hunting. For me, as Deadhead there is a special fun this month, but otherwise I enjoy the browns and hope the white stuff holds off as long as possible.
Today is a new beer noted by the brewery as a Belgian Session or a single (I like that concept). Really all in all, pretty good and interesting. I think the BA total score is a little too unfavorable. What do people expect from a 4.9% abv beer.
Happy New Beer Sunday and best to all this week.

Well howdy, NBS. It's been awhile since I've posted, but I've been scrolling for the past few weeks.

    Bottled 9/18 and poured 11/2. $3 single, I think.

Appearance: Aggressive pour throws up two fingers of a creamy, egg shell white head that stays awhile. El Dankerino is a purdy orange color. Very nice looking beer. (4.5/5)

Smell: This beer has a smell that I've had in a few other DIPAs, and I'm not sure what the smell is and it's impossible for me to describe other than... sweet and chalky. There is then a load of kiwi, papaya, and peach. (4/5)

Taste/feel: I get that sweet and chalky sort of thing in the taste as well, but it's very brief... really at first sip though this beer pounds you. The kiwi/papaya/peach smells follow through in the taste with a really nice biscuit and caramel malt flavor. There's a lot of sweetness up front, followed by a smack of bitterness, and then a bittersweet, super dry finish. The alcohol can be tasted slightly near the end. A full-body mouthfeel on this with a moderate prickly carbonation that works nicely. (4.5, 4.25/5)

West Coast style...? Doesn't taste West Coast-y to me much at all, but it does taste like a very good, quite unique DIPA. El Dankerino has a combination of bitterness and not-flawlessly-hidden alcohol that may turn some people off, but I like it. It's a little rough around the edges, but still another very well-crafted beer by Odd Side. (4/5)

    4.05/5

    Cheers!

New Bastard of a Beer "Sunday"

Just as I refuse to submit to the end of summer and stop wearing sandals and shorts, so to does my tree out front. It is just now changing colors.

I actually found the Arrogant Bastard box set outside of a box for some reason. I am guessing he was selling them for more individually. It is an excellent store quite a ways from me, but they tend to be a little on the high side compared to the rest of Ohio. I paid $7.99 for Lucky and $8.99 for Bourbon. Price check on the 4 pack @Greywulfken ?

This new beer was actually consumed and reviewed on Saturday, but that work thing came into play. It was Sunday in spirit.

In the eloquent words of Kool-Aid man, Oh yeah!! Very solid toasted bread like malt base. A slight peppery spiceyness along with the hops. Both piney and citrusy. The hops and malt are very well balanced. Rock candy like sweetness. Slight caramel. Oak chips are noticeable, but not nearly to the extent of Oaked Bastard. Finish is very smooth and not bitter - if you let it warm. Bitter hop blast when cold.

Perfect feel. Just right on the carbonaion, the body, the alcohol. Leaves a nice slick coating and a general feeling of happiness.

A unique beer. Almost like a sexy, sophisticated American Barleywine had a baby with a fined tuned, athletic world class DIPA and sent it to the American Strong Ale Academy for gifted beers. Each version seems to get even better. If this were in 12 oz bottles I may never buy Oaked again.

Happy NBS; hope everyone is enjoying the start to November. I guess that means I will be drinking more stouts. Anyone else find it humorous that it has already snowed in the Carolina's? No snow in WI; although there was a trace of in on Halloween morning.

Ale Asylum has had Big Slick for quite some time at the brewery, but for the first time has bottled it. I've never had it so I thought this would be a good beer to start the day.

The nose is rich, dark, intense maltiness with both bitter and sweetness aromas. One would think there is chocolate and coffee added, so Ale Asylum has really done a nice job with the selection of roasted malts. The flavors are not quite on par with nose, but enjoyable. Bitter malts and coffee flavor up front. I pick up some bakers chocolate in the middle. Finish is bitter with a big roasted malt flavor. A very well done oatmeal stout that I almost thought was imperial.

Good afternoon all, Thanks CaveDave for keeping us tuned in.
Today we watched all that yard work go for naught, nothing like 40 MPH
swirling winds to re distribute the maple leaves. So go to the basement and retrieve
a stunning saison from Hill Farmstead. Technically I am having this a second time, full disclosure.

A 2012 bottle poured into a modified tulip glass.
A - A light honey color, furious carbonation, culminating in a thick creamy froth of a cap.
The lacing hangs in full glory for the entire experience. The clarity is striking.
S - Upon popping the cap, the nose explodes with lemon, honey suckle ,and hints of lily. That was at arms length! Get up close and white pepper, green grape skins, and fresh chopped lemongrass are all forward. The nose is amazing.
T - As introduced by the nose this Bière de Miel, is floral forward. The flavors run across the palate in a dance contest, blending, sweet and sharp, soft and tart. There is no dominant flavor here, the honey is subtle, the yeast keeps it tart. As the glass warms some light straw rises up.
F - This is medium bodied, well carbonated, not over carbonated. The palate starts clean and fresh, lingers a touch then, as you enjoy, the middle, rounds out leaving a slight coating all pleasant. The finish is clean and delightful.
O - Anna is a delight, with some cellar time the beer is more tart, and the round mouth feel is a pleasure to behold.
Another display of exacting execution by Hill Farmstead, creating a superb craft beer.

    Cheers all

    New Hometown Beer Sunday Redux

Cheers everyone and a Happy new Beer Sunday to you all. Today I have another beer form Ithaca Beer ( I had one last week) and it's another Rye Beer. This one is a rye IPA called Rustic Harvest Red Rye IPA. I loved it. I thought it was a delight to drink and showed off the idea that Ithaca could make an exemplary porter ( last week) and a wonderful IPA with rye as well.

    4.09/5 rDev +11.4%
    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

Pours a lovely hazed orange amber with soft pastel yellow hues around the edges. A fat off off white head of foam that lasts and leaves lace. The nose is terrific with fruity hops. Grapefruit mostly and a faint floral under that. A spicy bit of fragrant rye to peak the interest. A bit of soft sugar for malt. taste is lovely and smooth even though this beer has a good bit of rye. Spicy and piquant, an exuberant character form the rye. Buoyant and flavorful but always in tune with the rest of the beer. The grapefruit is earthy with a touch of it's pith but it does not go over into pithy bitterness. The peel of the grapefruit lying stately underneath that and a touch of the tart citric aspect as well. The malt in this one is a very light medium and carries nicely across the palate. The bitter is perfect in this. It's just enough to have coated your palae after a few sips with a bit of stickiness and resin so that it leans down onto the palate and does not take it over completely. It does not dominate the drink or the finish. It leaves you with a point of contrast so that you can taste once more this beers fruitier and sweeter aspects as it once more boasts a little malt sweetness before a dry finish.

Congratulaions ithaca on a well done replacement for double zilla.

Cheers everyone and Happy New Beer Sunday :grinning:

I had that on tap on Friday. I didn't know what to expect, since I don't particularly love the Bastard series by and large (Double is OK; I've never had Oaked fresh). But I thought this beer was damn amazing! Strong Ale / Barleywine / Nectar of the Gods, I don't care what they call it. I thought it was delicious.

I have never been a huge fan of Arrogant Bastard either. Still find it a little harsh. I do like the Oaked, but dont get it often. I like Burton better in that price range/category. This one I would love to see in 4 packs though. Hope to try the Bourbon Bastard tonight, but I am already wondering what the Lucky would be like in bourbon barrels.

    Good Morning/Afternoon All,
I've put an hour somewhere and I can't find it. My dogs have no idea why their schedule has been interrupted. It's some kind of plot. We took our walk in heaving wind and temps in the 30s. I love it. It's amazing how much faster people move when it's cold. It would not be polite to mosey when everyone is in such a hurry, so I moved as fast as I could.
I've always found Left Hand to be a very solid brewer with beers at a great price. Warrior IPA, a fresh hop offering is very tasty. Big citric nose and a bit darker than many IPAs, and so damned fresh and quaffable! I liked the Great Divide version more, but at this quality level, who cares. This is a solid tasty brew and buy it and drink it up!
I'm comfortable and laid back, so Doc Watson and John Prine just seemed to happen. My wife and I saw Paul McCartney Thursday PM at the Greensboro Coliseum and we were thrilled. I've been around music and shows, but this last US performance before heading off to Brazil was mind boggling. McCartney is an utter genius!

I would like to try Oaked fresh to give it a fair shake, but Burton Baton is beautiful fresh and aged; Oaked aged is.....not particularly good, at least IMO. And since I can nearly always get fresh BB, that's a no-brainer.

Happy NBS everyone! My first non-flag football Sunday in 8 weeks and I'm rather enjoying it

Sun is out and it's a crisp fall day in Central OH. Been enjoying some of the fresh hop beers hitting the shelves lately.

Aroma: vibrant white grape-like and melon hop aromas up front. Soft peach and citrusy character abounds. Clean fermentation character.

Appearance: Slightly hazy pale amber pour with a moderate white head that retains well.

Flavor: More white grape and peach character up front. Firm earthy hop bitterness as a base. No malt aroma to speak of. Finish is bone dry with a powdery and lingering bitter aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with medium high carbonation. Slightly oily due to the hop resins.

Overall impression: A very dry, very bright American IPA. While bitter and a mouthful of hops, the light body and low malt character make this immensely drinkable. Another winner from Founders.
