[IMG] Well another COLD weekend here in CT. Today was really windy and topped out at 45deg. So I did some house work I e been neglecting for a month. Then proceeded to rip the top end out of my neighbors car for him. :slight_frown:. Either way a couple hours and a couple 7 budweisers and it runs like a top. Figured I'd rewArd myself with something in the fridge. Overall pretty tasty but not much maple :slight_frown: why do no maple beers have much maple flavor ? O Well on to the next one.

Damn photobucket, it's coalition brewing maple cup porter, is there any other ways to post a pic from an iPhone on here?

Good evening Perle purloiners and nefarious Nugget nabbers, another one of my NBS reviews coming at'cha. A note- today is Day 2 of Nanowrimo's challenge of writing a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. For more information, feel free to visit http://nanowrimo.org/

Today's docket: Belhaven's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale.

Poured hard into my Lucifer snifter.

Sight- Deep, deep brown body. Red highlights. Pours a beige head that reduces to a small floating island the size of a poker chip. Lacing hangs dainty on one side, thick and bandy on the other side of the glass. Is my glass not “beer clean?”

Smell- Subtle toasted caramel, sugar, roasted malt. Hops are not noticeable.

Taste- Mimics the initial aroma quite closely. Great caramel-ly malt, a bit of… butter? Again, hops are Spartan. It has that stereotypical Scotch Ale taste, one I enjoy. At 6.5%, no feeling of alcohol- much appreciated, though I have sought out boozier brews.

Mouthfeel- Gently coats my tongue, a bit oily. Maybe a Medium-minus? Tiny bubbles ceaselessly rise to the surface.

Overall- A nice offering by Belhaven, one I like as much as their regular Scottish Ale.

If you look up "wee" in Scottish parlance, you'll see that it's anything but tiny. Hence:

A unique beer. Almost like a sexy, sophisticated American Barleywine had a baby with a fined tuned, athletic world class DIPA and sent it to the American Strong Ale Academy for gifted beers. Each version seems to get even better. If this were in 12 oz bottles I may never buy Oaked again.

Wes, this is one hell of a quote, and awesome description.

You also make me want to open mine, right this second. The next best thing- wait until next NBS, so I can review mine.

Greetings fellow NBSers! A very PNW week weather-wise here in the Fourth Corner this week, lots of wind, and rain, and some scattered sun breaks as well. A local art gallery/artist studio/all-ages music venue hosted a "Haunted Beer Garden" at the brewery I help out at his Thursday and Friday, it was a lot of work setting up and tearing down, and the rain probably kept some people away, but they made a nice bit of change to help their mission, which is nice.

Since I keep about 9 boxes of beer in @okcomputer's basement, it was only fair that I went over yesterday afternoon and helped him construct some shelves. Which will mostly hold my beer. Along with the beers of a couple other friends. My first NBS entry was not one that went into the cellar. Courtesy of NBS' own @TongoRad, is an easy drinker that I've been looking forward to for a while. Now that I've had it, I want more: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26817/74467/

Last week I was post this on my NBS entry, but I ended up not drinking, so I didn't get it in. R.I.P.Jack Bruce

I ran a bar in the 70s and a group of Irish and Scottish guys would drop in when nearby and enchant everyone with sea shanties. Everyone would be standing, moving, and drinking. Great memories. Thanks for the updated version!

But it's a different barrel-aged offering for me today.

First Clown Shoes beer I've tried, actually. I'd thought I'd had something else before, but after reviewing it looks like not.

It's not bad. But not my favourite. There's a great, enticing aroma that springs forth upon uncapping—maple, brown sugar, cinnamon, pecans?? and bourbon bourbon bourbon—but the flavour that follows is a little one-note. Some interesting woodiness as it warms, but mostly it just tastes like bourbon and sugar.

Well, I guess there are worse problems to have.

@cookiequiz ooh a pecan pie porter. All the want!

And now the moment you've all been waiting for:
Hello and happy NBS Wizards of Weizenbocks and Princesses of Porters.

It got COLD here this past weekend. Halloween brought no trick-or-treaters but freezing rain to the normally sultry south where I am. What a low down shame. Someone is going to have to eat all this durn candy I bought.

And just in case I haven’t enough treats about I have Southern Tier’s Choklat all to myself tonight. Like many stouts this is best served a bit warmer. Bittersweet chocolate puts me in mind of a cake batter. Lactic acid and coffee present in this one. The base stout is well made. I would definitely say this has good bones. Not my favorite chocolate brew but not too shabby. This is good enough I think they should make it year round.

If you're following along on WBAYDN?, you can see how I arrived at this next beer for New Stout Sunday: Part Two: The Quickening: There Can Be Only One. And what a beer it is.

    Epic Brewing's Big Bad Baptist

This is an imperial stout with cacao nibs, coffee, and aged in whiskey barrels. Epic doesn't specify bourbon or whiskey, but as far as I'm concerned, it's not important; I'd imagine that even if it isn't bourbon, it likely is basically the same, vice Irish Whiskey or Scotch or Canadian Blended Whiskey.

This is a damn good beer. As I said over on WBAYDN? and in my review, if it's not in the absolute top tier of BA stouts (BCBS, Parabola), then it's just a hair below. Tons of chocolate and coffee, and a very nice BA note (a tiny bit up front, and then a nice, strong but mellow note on the back end where it belongs). There are just rolling fields of roasted barley, and all the various flavors come together beautifully.

    It's a stout-lover's dream.

Funny thing about weighted averages: I come in at a +rDev, and yet the overall wAvg goes down. Figures.

Thanks to @aoampm for yet another quality bomber. Delicious freaking beer. Cheers, NBSers!

    New Dunkelweizen Sunday

Hello fellow beer lovers! Relatively nice, mostly sunny day it was here in Milwaukee. Cool, but not as cold as the last couple days (though cooler than a few days ago).

Tomorrow I will be in Wisconsin a full year. It's been an interesting year. I've been trying mainly Wisconsin beers, and there are plenty. This is certainly an area for good beer. Today's selection is a limited release brew from Lakefront - from the "My Turn" series. This one is "Colin" - I found it to be an enjoyable Dunkelweizen. I poured it into a Ramstein glass (from my native New Jersey), and am currently enjoying the third of the six-pack. I gave one to a neighbor who enjoys German-style beers, leaving me with two left. There's no doubt I will enjoy the other two before the night is over!

I had this beer for the first time yesterday, and while I liked it quite a bit (3.89 / -1.8%), I'm a little disappointed (for you) that this is your first Clown Shoes beer. They have some ridiculously good offerings, and this is not among their best. But again, it's quite good.

Keep it mind it's only like 25% BBA, so the bourbon is very low impact in the flavor department. I got most of the same flavors from it that you did, but the bourbon seemed much more subdued to me.

    Greetings All:

Checking in on a sunny Sunday here in the great northwest. Temps in the mid 50's with the Seahawk game on TV.

With that in mind I'm having 12 Man Pale Ale "For The Fan." Poured in to my old school Seahawk mug.
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1345/109253/

I was torn on buying this one. Dick's Brewing has a reputation for good beer, so I was pretty sure it wouldn't be horrible, but with the marketing gimmick, and a target market which would probably include macro-lager drinkers, I was skeptical. Thankfully it's not as bad as it could have been. Inoffensive, malty with a minor hop presence. Actually it reminds me of my own home brewed pale ale, which is OK, but something I am still trying to improve upon. I doubt I'll go in for 12 Man again.

Meanwhile the Seahawks are in a bit of a battle with the hapless Raiders. Not the Seahawks of last February I'm afraid.

Well, with daylight savings time gone, and darkness upon us early, the grills have been shutdown for the season and the dutch oven is fetched from the bottom of the kitchen cabinet. Time to dust off the indoor cooking recipes.

    Until next time,

    Happy Trails!
