You have ten minutes to walk from where you are, right now, to get good beer.

You can't get a taxi, you can't drive. You have to walk. You can't delve into your cellar/refrigerator either. Or drink that beer that is in your hand.

Do you have a good choice of beer within a ten minute walk? Good pubs? Good bars? Maybe a good beer store?

If not, how long does it take you to walk to a good beer place?

I think it takes me fifteen minutes to get to a decent pub, similar for good off license for some takeaway beer.

Within ten minutes though, I only have a hotel with Guinness and worthingtons cream flow on tap. Or some shitty pubs with Tennents lager.

We're currently in a hotel room just west of St. Louis. We could walk to a gas station which MIGHT have something like Boulevard, or hit up the local site of Granite City Brewery. I suppose it could be worse...

I ten minute walk from where I currently sit puts at Kulshan Brewery, with a Trader Joes on the way, so plenty of good beer. From my usual location, a ten minute walk puts me at 3 other breweries, and about a dozen bars with very good-to0great taplists. Good beer is alway close at hand when you're in the PNW.

I could walk 10 mins to the liquor store and get a decent selection. But my best bet is to drive 3 hours to somewhere that is not Oklahoma.

What a very cool thread! But I feel my European (and urban American) friends have a great advantage. I most certainly cannot walk 10 minutes and get a good beer; I can barely walk 10 minutes and get a Coors Light. So, no, I can't, and I'm very envious of those who can (like @beertunes above).

Edit: to fully answer your question, how long would it take me to walk to a place with a decent beer. Hmmm. I'm thinking almost certainly 45 minutes. I live in an area where driving is kind of necessary, and (for obvious reasons) I haven't tested out how long it would take me to get anywhere by foot, but I know it wouldn't be quick.

The archaic grocery store that seems to be stuck in the 80s. Okay local selection but a lot of the beer doesn't sell well so I imagine some is not good anymore.

I'm a 5 minute walk from a burger bar that serves good local beer, and another bar that specializes in gourmet sausages and craft beer. I'm also a 15 to 20 minute walk from -- arguably -- the best beer (and wine) bar/bottle shop in the city. Could definitely be worse!

I can walk 10 minutes to get to one of my favorite bars... although that walk may not be 100% legal. I am out in the burbs and have to cross an intersection with no pedestrian lights/crosswalk.

I live in a large neighborhood. I could walk 7 minutes to a gas station that has probably 10-15 different craft and import offerings.

However, the issue sometimes is the freshness. So I'd have to walk 25-30 minutes to a local beer store in town. I walk slow and enjoy the scenery.

I live in the suburbs though.

My old condo, I could walk 5-6 minutes to a world class beer store in the city.

I could get to a liquor store that is a few steps up from a gas station but it would be 40min to get to a good liquor store and not walkable to a good bar. :slight_frown:

Probably a gas station but I don't think I could get anywhere in 10 minutes. Might take me 15-20 to walk to the closest gas station and 30 or so to walk to the best bar/decent craft store!

I have a decent liquor store within ten walking minutes from where I live. Founders, Stone, Green Flash, Weihenstephaner, Goose Island, Orval, Chimay, Sam Adams, Ithaca, Grey Sail, etc etc...I hardly ever go there though. A touch overpriced but if I had no car, it would be me lockdown spot.

I'm a 10 min walk from a cool little "gastropub" that typically has 20-30 "craft" beers on tap at any time. Unfortunately, a lot of them I find to be pretty uninspired. I typically order Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen (from the pint glass...boo). Food is excellent, though.

Here's one of my shitty pubs, it was part of a three story tenement but they tend to pull down tenements here but keep the corner businesses. You can see the tenement to the right of it that would have extended over the pub maybe sixty years go or so.

Notice the lack of windows, as windows can be smashed. The last time I was in this pub, it was painted black and I saw an old man getting threatened with a baseball bat. Interesting fact, Glasgow sells a lot of baseball bats, but no one plays baseball. They are just used as weapons

In ten minutes I can get to Toronado, Burgundian, Latona Pub, Elysian Tangletown, Whole Foods and PCC.

Edit: Just remembered there is also a coffee shop within ten minutes of my house that always has Boneyard RPM on tap, too.

That's not counting a bunch of smaller bars and restaurants with nice local and/or craft options around me.

A 10 minute walk for me gets me no where near beer or anything else for that matter. Oh, the joys of living in the country. I honestly wouldn't trade it for anything . . . . well maybe I would trade life in the counrty for a Bourbon County Rare and a Cigar City Life is Like . . .
