I'll admit, I'm a bit weird, but I think HopSlam is drinking better now than when I popped my first bottle of the season. Does anyone else like "old" IPAs? Better yet, is anyone aging some of these IIPAs in the hopes of mellowing some of the abrasive (in-yo-face!) hop overload?

Color me crazy, I'll be drinking HopSlam in August... and it'll be delicious.

Well, it's called "HOPSLAM" for a reason.

Maybe you should explore amber ales?

It just doesn't/wouldn't last that long around here. With that said, more power to you if you're liking it better now. It's quite odd, but not as odd as penis farts. Yup.

Good luck with that around these parts. If you can't get an IPA within 30 seconds of coming off the bottling line, well dammitt that's just not drinkable

I've got some (2x6 packs I think) HopSlam from last year actually, so it's going on 16-18 months old now. I bought too much, tried one after maybe 4-5 months and didn't like it, and it hasn't moved from the back of the fridge since.

Not a huge hop lover myself, I would have to think I would enjoy a hopslam with a few months on it vs fresh. It's all about what you enjoy not the masses.

I've had a 1 year old Hopslam and thought it was terrible...however...to each his own and I'm glad someone is enjoying it! Cheers!

I've got a few friends who prefer Hopslam with at least 6-9 months on it.
    I prefer it fresh myself...

I bought a case of celebration fresh off the truck a few years ago and thought it got better a month or two after I started drinking 'em.

Hopslam is different, holds up better. As does Surly Wet which I just had an old can of and it was still phenomenal.....

That said I just drank a Yards IPA that was past its prime and it was aweful. I try to drink them all fresh though.

First, to each his own. Mix your IPA with black Folgers coffee if it makes you happy. But I think those of you who are talking about aging IPAs to let the hops fade are missing an important part of the equation. The hops taste/aroma doesn't just fade, it changes in a way the brewer (in most cases anyway) never intended in American-style IPAs. This is like saying I like my stouts best when they're near boiling hot and blended with melted gruyere cheese and jalapeno dip. Maybe this is absolutely delicious, but it's not how the beer was meant to be consumed. Just my 2₵.

I DO love ambers, but I enjoy hoppy ambers - Napa Smith Lost Dog is a great one, as is GLBC Nosferatu.

I had PtE after 60 days and a freshie and I agree that particular beer doesn't hold up well to age. I'd be interested to hear what, if any IPAs or IIPAs that people think age better than others or those that don't age well.

Pliny, Double Jack, and Abrasive are definitely on my "drink as fresh as possible" list. But then so are most IPAs. The only IPAs I'd even consider aging are 120 Minute (not a true IIPA in my opinion) and Celebration—and I don't even recommend Celebration past a few months.
