I ordered some Cantillon bottles from a Belgian store online and had it shipped. When I got my tracking number I saw that the status of my box was "retained at customs: reason unknown" at the JFK airport. The company they used was Kilopost International. This is my first time having beer shipped overseas so I was curious if anyone who has had experience with this could chime in and let me know if this is a regular occurrence or if I should be concerned. Any actions I could take to ensure that my box arrives safely and/or isn't stuck in customs for a long time?

How long has is been there? I've had a few boxes held up for a while (week or two) but that eventually came through without further issue.

How are you tracking it via USPS or BPost?

Do they guarantee delivery? I've ordered Absinthe from France by private courier and it costs, but it avoids customs, and they guarentee delivery.

My company ships a bunch of stuff back and forth overseas. Customs hold is not uncommon and usually clears in a week or so. It usually takes some interaction on either the shipper or receivers part. I'd reach out to the company you bought it from. Chances are good they have a shipping agent / broker who can help you.

I was suppose to take a Trappist class tonight but it got postponed because all the beers we're suppose to taste are stuck at JFK in customs.

I'd imagine they will eventually release your beers.

I had an order from trappistworld held up with this status for 4 days last month. Didn't have to do anything, it was released and delivered shortly after. here's my tracking info from bpost:

I work in the shipping industry and if customs is holding the package there is nothing anybody can do until customs finishes with their inspection. Customs is an arm of the government and we all know that the government doesn't care about customer service and will finish with their inspection when they feel like it. As long as what is being imported is allowed all you can do is wait. It sucks but that's all you can do now that customs is holding it.

the last box I had shipped from Belguim was held up in customs for a few days.
It showed up on my doorstep before the status was changed on line.
Just be patient, it will show up.

The shipper hopefully has a broker to clear the issue. I'm sure you'll have it soon enough, but you should definitely contact the retailer

My backwards American brain was like "Holy shit. Does it seriously take 8 months to get something delivered from Belgium?"
    There's no 14th month, Mark -_-

They must be inspecting more often. I've never received this message in the past from Belgium in a Box shipments. I recently purchased 16 glasses and I just got an update with this message. I know it's common, but I've personally never had it pop up. Oh well, this time around for me, it's just glassware, so I have nothing to worry about.

    Update? Just curious.
