I'd like to know what types of beer are sour, so that I can avoid them in the future. I know that New Belgium Snapshot is. No wonder it is on sale for half price here (less than $3.00 a six-pack)!

I don't think that's on sale BECAUSE it's sour, more because it's an either spring or summer seasonal that stores are trying to move to make space for fall and winter stuff. Plus it's probably not at its peak for flavor at this point. Also, I'd say that's more of a tart beer than a sour.

Beers like lambics, gueuzes and wild ales are the ones you apparently want to avoid since you don't like sour in a beer. Maybe you'll come around. Gose and berliner weisse probably won't be your bag either.

Snapshot is not sour. It's on sale because it's their spring or summer release. Sour beer styles are American Wild Ale, Gose, Flanders Red Ale, Flanders Oud Bruin, Berliner Weisse, Lambic, Gueze, Faro. Snapshot is American Pale Wheat Ale.

It would be impossible to list every sour beer brewed here in the US, let alone imports. There are some breweries that tend to specialize in them, such as Jolly Pumpkin Ales here in Michigan, but most breweries have some as part of their regular portfolio selections. Avoid them for now if you choose, but sometime in your future you will try more of them and decide that they are okay, or maybe you'll even like them.

Lol what. So it's on sale because you hate sours? Even though it isn't a sour?

Actually gents, NB Snapshot is sour: lacto is added. That info is on NB's website. http://www.newbelgium.com/beer/detail.aspx?id=a099139e-d2d9-433d-8029-66f760839ccd

The lacto is pretty damn apparent in the taste, too. It may not be traditional, but it is definitely sour.

I'm thinking the term "sour" was used as if the beer went "bad"...bad milk is soured?

If so, that beer is not bad, just not what was originally intended. If I saw that price, I'd buy a case in a second.

    Huh?

Sour beer is produced by the addition of certain acids to the beer, through fermentation, lactic acidulated malt, or food grade chemical acids. Lactobacillus is a lactic acid producing bacteria, that New Belgium purposely incorporated into Snapshot to, I would assume, give the beer a 'snap' of acidity. Main acid bacteria in brewing are Lactobacillus, Pediococcus, and Acetabacter. Sour = pH (acids). pH 4.2 ish is standard beer, while pH 3.0 is very sour, just to give an idea.

FWIW, I brew and drink a lot of sour/wild beer and I think NB nailed it with Snapshot. Flavorful, light, tart, highly drinkable.

Just avoid the words "kriek, oude bruin, and gueuze" and almost always the price point will be higher. Do continue to be narrow-minded though. Once you get into sours it's an expensive endless spiral of never getting enough.

I've had a few Russian Rivers sours, a few other sours, and I have learned that sour beer is not for me. Tried a gose for the first time tonight and it tasted like Sprite with orange juice. Not what I am looking for in a beer.

And anything that has Funk or Funky on the label. Avoid them. Sours are disgusting. I don't get the hardons for them. You'll overpay for heartburn basically. You're better off drinking vinegar or Real Lemon.

Going on prior posts, OP doesn't like bitter beers either "This morning I decided to save the remaining bottles of Summertime and throw the Honker's Ale and IPA away. Bitter beers are not for me!", but who likes sweet beer "I'm not a fan of bitter beer. Are there any good beers with some noticeable sweetness?"' who is allergic to Blue Moon "Has anyone on here had allergic reactions to certain beers? My allergies have been bothering me since I drank some Blue Moon Belgian White earlier this week. Maybe it's a coincidence, but I don't know. :slight_frown:". Not that there's anything wrong with that.
And I have to much free time today.

My beer shop of choice does a great thing. They put a little off color (reddish) circle on all Beer description designated as "Sour" by definition. Makes my picking a lot easier.

The first time I had a sour I didn't hate it but I also didn't "get it." The second time I had one I started to come around. As of last night they're my new love in beer. At Cask Republic in Stamford CT I had three sours in a row on tap that went from sour to sourer to sourest (are those words?).

OEC Brewing Blend #2. A delicious and tart saison.

Rodenbach Grand Cru. Definitely sour and an absolutely delicious Flanders Red Ale.

La Luna Rossa from Birrificio del Ducato. An American Wild Ale easily twice as sour as Grand Cru and while not as great of a beer, still a great way to end the night.
