Nope, I'm not talking about that failed Brazilian from your significant other.

I'm talking about the wax jobs on some of these bottles of beer out here. Just had a Seizoen Bretta and quite enjoyed the beer. But the sad little waxed cap looked like someone had taken a candle and a lighter and dripped a half stick over the cap and then used a popsicle stick to distribute it properly.

Trinity, I love their beers, but damn if they don't seem to also employ a third grade Arts & Crafts class to wax their tops. The shit just looks sad, man.

Now, I know this can go either way as some of these wax tops are TOO WELL DONE and are harder to remove than a chastity belt. At least those look pretty though.

What are some other offenders out there?

Logsdon's caps are like their beers...organic.
They use beeswax to wax dip their bottles vs bottling wax.
Give 'em a break, they're doing something different.

I have had a few from Freetail that I've almost severed off my hands on. Their wax was primarily plastic that seemed to have an inner wrapping like a radial tire. brilliant!

De Molen wax jobs are half ass, not enough wax to cover the cap.

I know presentation is important to some people, but who cares if the beer is good. Great Lakes has the worst artwork and the beers look boring as hell. but I still drink the beer cuz they are good. Isn't that what's important?

Was the wax on there and did it serve its function? Are we complaining about wax that didn't work, or wax that wasn't appealing to the eye? If it's the latter then I think we've hit a new low in regards to what gets complained about on these boards.

No joke, right when I read the title of this thread I immediately thought of Logsdon's! I saw a case of Sezioen Bretta at Decicco's in Brewster, NY last weekend and it looked like the bottles were waxed, dried, then left in some hot attic somewhere. They were an absolute mess. It actually prevented me from buying it because it looked like it was in horrible shape.

Second vote for De Molen. With them, I always find myself asking, "What's the point?"

Came to agree with @ONovoMexicano, but I actually didn't know it was intentional on Logsdon's part. Appreciate the lowdown, @brewmastercat.

    ^^^ Giggles.

That's all fine and dandy, but if it looks like shit, they might consider skipping the wax entirely. Why make a world-class beer and then add a touch that rather than make the beer more attractive, really makes it less appealing?

    ^^^ Giggles.

Taste is supreme, but let's not pretend presentation doesn't matter.

On the subject of too well done Terrapin CRWnB comes to mind. Great presentation, definetly! Ease of breaking 2 layers of wax, almost impossible! Took almost 20min and every sharp object in the house.

I have to agree with everyone on Logsdons, what a mess. I do not give them a pass because it's bees wax, it's just a plain pain in the ass.

Just got a bottle and have been staring at that bad boy, wondering if I'm gonna have to get out a tile saw to get that stuff off. Looks classy as hell, but hot damn it's thick.

The thought did cross my mind. Since then I bought a waiters corkscrew that's got a curved knife meant as a foil cutter, but it does wonders for wax too.

I don't know how to post pics on BA, seems so complicated. The upside is that it keeps me out of the Post Your Latest Haul and WBAYDN threads.
