I picked up some Sixpoint beer today and am wondering how their dating works. The pack of Resin is best before 7/7/15 which seems crazy. The pack of Sensi is best before 12/17/14. Anyone have an idea of when these were canned?

With Sensi being a fresh hop beer, I'd guess 9/17/14, three months out. As far as the Resin, that does seem extremely far out, but has to be pretty fresh. I'm sure @Sixpoint will be able to answer this.

Sixpoint beers are dated for a year so that resin was canned 7/7/14. Their beers hold up pretty well with things like last years Hi-Red drinking still drinking wonderfuly. Sensi is dated for 90 days due to the use of fresh hops

@Sixpoint Would be your best bet. There was a thread way back that talked about their dating. Message him/her?

Sixpoint goes through a lot of trouble to make sure their best by dates are legit, and they vary based on the brew. As a frequent Resin drinker, I can vouch: that beer holds out impressively well. Obviously, drinking it fresh is best, but it's going to be very, very good at 3 months, and drinkable at 5 months.

I don't think I'd want Resin at 9 months, but don't be scared off by the seemingly generous date.

I'm sure Shane will clarify for you.

I also think the dates are based on constant refrigeration, too, which would make a pretty big difference (it probably says something to that effect on the cans, but I don't have one to check).

The Resin is currently 9 months. That means your 7/7/15 beer is super fresh - only a few weeks old. The Sensi is about 1.5 months old at this point.

The core beers that are produced for export are 1 year from packaging. Seasonals tend to be 90 days but are even lower in certain circumstances.

FWIW due to the confusion with all of the different dates, feedback from fans and customers, and other reasons - we are investigating putting a "born on" date as well as either a) a best by date on the package can, OR b) a code/key on the website that provides the consumer our personal "best by" recommendation based upon laboratory tests. We need to do more research on this AND most importantly, investigate what the capabilities of our machinery at this point are, as well as our wholesalers. thanks for your business!

    thanks for the heads up

    Indeed. We appreciate the support.

Well, you know how the BA community would react to born on dates (vice best by): we'd love it! But we also understand that we're a small part of your market, and more casual craft beer drinkers (and certainly retailers) might prefer a best by date.

I'm used to your freshness windows (is that a thing? it should be), but obviously many drinkers new to Sixpoint are not.

Either way, this reminds me that I only have one more Resin in the fridge.

I will state (once again) that if there is a production restriction a canned on date is the best way to date the Sixpoint beers. If at all possible, then dating both with canned on date and best by date would be optimum. Staying with the status quo of solely a best by date is the least desireable IMO since there is ambiguity in the best by timeframe from brand to brand.

    Cheers!

Yes, from initial research it appears our biggest restrictions are:

    1) LEGAL - in certain jurisdictions, its actually mandated that we have a "best before" date on the package - i.e. a manufacturer's enforced expiration date.

    2) OPERATIONAL - our wholesaler agreements require us to have some official stance on code dating, so an arbitrary suggestion may not be sufficient when it comes to freshness

    3) MECHANICAL - we're not sure if our current equipment can actually print both the expiration date and the packaging date on both the can and the cardboard wrap - it may be too many letters to fit on the package

If we can find a way to overcome these three things, we'll be rocking and rolling...

So my can of Bengali dated best by 31 July 2015 is canned on 30 July 2014? Not sure what Shane means by 1 yr for export. Seems like a long time for an IPA to stay in top form.

    Enjoy

Let me weigh in because I have had problems with Resin. The can DOES say refrigerate. The beers that they brew(especially Resin and Bengali) should be kept cold to keep the integrity and quality of the beer at the top of it's game. I have had Resin that has sit on a shelf(unrefrigeretaed) for se veral months and it kills the beer. Shane was very gracious and professional dealing with this problem AND I SUGGEST THAT IF YOU ENCOUNTER THE BEERS unrefrigereated, speak to the store and tell them that unrefrigerated, these beers are not good !!!!!!!!!

Having both the born on date AND the best by date makes the most sense. I work in food service and we always label food with the produced on date and the discard date. Same thing should apply here. Common sense.

I'm surprised that more bottles don't say refrigerate on them, or at least IPA's. I feel that the fact that the new Resin bottles state that they need to be refrigerated is a major reason why one of my local stores chose to refrigerate them in their small devoted bomber fridge next to the wall of six-pack fridges, which are all flanked by a wall of bombers.

All beer should be kept refrigerated at all times, I once left a couple bottles of Troegs Perpetual IPA at my mother in laws house in her fridge. When I went over a year later to help her clean up her basement I found the bottles, popped one, and it tasted exactly the same as fresh bottles I've had. The problem is many places just don't have the space to refrigerate everything and if they do, they may not have enough space to display all the items that they have cold so those would be forgotten about by the customer. Our local sixpoint rep also told me to keep all their beers refrigerated if I could as they'll hold up much better this way. Also local brewery carton who self distributes has trained their drivers to force retailers to keep all their cans cold, when we got our first delivery I told the driver to drop his stack of cans on the floor over in the beer aisle and he adamantly told me "no, these have to be kept in the cold box" I liked that, showed a lot of knowledge and love for the product.

A lot of places just don't have the space to keep that much beer refrigerated, especially here in PA where most stuff is sold by cases. It is just not feasible to keep cases all cold, there is not enough space.

@Sixpoint stuff is awesome when fresh, so for me a canned on date is the best way to insure I get my beer fresh. If there is one thing you can guarantee though, it's that Sixpoint will do what the beer community wants, they are awesome that way.

Funny you mention this. I brought it up in one of the Sixpoint threads over the summer and got bashed. I had brought it up in relation to be wary of buying Sixpoint in stores that have it on the shelf because those stores clearly aren't paying attention. Then a crowd of fellow BA (insert favorite plural derogatory term here) jumped all over me asking how did I ever know any of my beers were always kept cold, etc, etc. Shane never really weighed in on it although he was in the discussion.

OK @Sixpoint i need some clarification please.
You said the core beers get a best buy date one year from packaging and the seasonal stuff gets 90 days. I picked up a sixer of beast mode and a 4 of hi res yesterday both dated best by july 9 2015. When were those canned? I can't imagine my beast mode was canned in July.
