Tonight's line-up for "Crafty Poker". I figured it bee easier to take a couple group picks now instead of in between hands of Hold'em.

Busy Saturday already, it seems! I'm taking this afternoon to try out a couple of experiments on aging. First up: Founders Backwoods Bastard.

2014 on the left, 2013 on the right. Damn, if one of those backwoods bastards is creepy, seeing a small gang of them coming for you is definitely scary!

    2014 left, 2013 right.

The 2014 has a more pleasant smell. There's more bourbon, more fruity maltiness. The 2013 has a bit of an aspirin thing going on, and everything else is subdued (by comparison).

In the mouth, the 2014 is a little hot, with a fairly strong bourbon presence on the finish. Dark fruit and chocolate. Yum. The 2013 is definitely more subdued, although the bourbon finish has a way of growing hot as it settles down in your chest. Plenty of fruit flavors and chocolate are still present, with only the slightest hint of a stale aspirin or metallic flavor suggested by the aroma.

Both taste plenty much like a Scotch ale, and both have noticeable bourbon. The 2014 is hotter, and a little bit sweeter; more of a kick in the teeth (I'm assuming the hop presence has a part to play there, at 50 IBUs). The overall flavor profile is about the same, with the 2013 being smoother, but imperfectly aged. I think I prefer the fresh version, but it might be at its best with a few months on it.

I'm wondering if my basement is imperfect for aging conditions; I don't like that hint of aspirin in an aged beer. I'll see if that is replicated with tonight's experiment.

    Cheers!

Mowed the lawn for the final time of the year, raked the leaves, and cleaned the garage. Time for a beer and some football. First time with this one, very unique taste. Cheers all!
