Sometimes a beer is too perfect and there has to be a deduction for that.

Jake, what was the biggest difference in Elder vs. Younger in your opinion?

My only two 5's are Heady and HF Ephraim.

    53. Might seem high, but that's out of 1,957, so it's 2.7%. I tend to rate based on the style and I think that multiple beers in a given style can be a "5".

For example, I did an imperial stout tasting that included non-BA examples -- Kate the Great, Darkness, Dark Lord, Baller Stout, Hunahpu's and BA examples--FiftyFifty Elijah Craig 12yr, CBS, Black Tuesday, Life Is Like and Bourbon County Rare. Sure there were notable differences among them. I liked some more and I liked some less, but it became fairly obvious to me that it would be a bit silly to rate any of these lower than a "5". Splitting hairs really.

Zero so far. Waiting on it if someone wants to send me one, though...

I haven't given any beer a perfect score. I doubt I ever will. That score is reserved for a perfect beer, which I may never find. I'm sure there is one out there though.

5, I think? I could give a few more. If everyone has a top 10 list, then why shouldn't those all be 5 point beers? Certainly, there can be personal connections with a beer that make it better than ratings for ratings sake.

Perfection is hard to achieve. 4.89 for the Weihenstephaner Hefe is highest I've rated.

Bump Founders Imperial Stout up, I first rated it a 4.75 but then had it again and realized I was just kidding myself not reading it a 5. It's perfect for the style!

I've given 11, so I'm probably overly generous. Looking at them now, I would re-rate the following at 4-something:

    Maple Bacon Coffee Porter
    Last Snow
    KBS
    Cubano Espresso

But I stick by my 5 ratings for these:

    BCBCS
    Snowed In
    DB Huna
    Cantillon Gueuze
    Peche Mortel
    BCBW
    Lagunitas Sucks

As far as I'm concerned, you have to have at least one 5. If you don't, how could you fairly judge the other beers you drink? Without a pinnacle, a benchmark (if you will), there is no point from which to judge.

^^^^^^ there's always room to grow, always a beer better than what your drinking, has to be some cusion.

I have only given one 5 and this was just 2 weeks ago to CBS. I think a 5 has to somehow surprise you and exceed your expectations which might be hit or miss depending on your palate on any given day. I would really like to try something 2 or more times before rating it 4.5 or higher, but anything I rate 4.0 or higher is a great beer to me. BTW, I also tried DBH that same night and was under-impressed, but it may have been bad timing on my part, or just from a glass that I could not verify. Would like to get another chance on that one.
