Damn fine (and windy) day on Hank's patio.

Hank comes back from Wichita, KS after the Joe Bonamassa show with a growler of River City Down Town Brown Ale. Nice!

Lots of vanilla and coconut. I get some of the quad though too. My first bottle of this and I am impressed. I live relatively close to Ommegang, so I imagine I'll be able to find their stuff easier soon. Looks like people are drinking well! Cheers!

Avery Samael 2014, snifter. Aroma strongly suggests boozy caramel, hint of industrial chemicals. Flavor is better, albeit straightforward. There is some suggestion of vodka-dipped apples (you know, the kind you get in a "fruit bowl" at a college party) liberally covered in caramel sauce. Sweeter than it smells for sure, but a mild alcohol burn keeps it from being cloying.

I remember reading some horrendous reviews of this beer and Mephistopheles, the primary reason I have avoided their high gravity beers for 8 years. Tasting Pumpkyn a few months back convinced me to give their other stuff a shot. This isn't nearly as good as either Pumpkyn or Rumpkin but it's still surprisingly smooth. That being said, given batch variation I can easily see some releases of this being utterly horrid when fresh; its alcohol burn is already borderline unpleasant and yet at 14.2% alcohol this one is actually the weakest Samael release since 2006 at least.

Widely available and probably fun to age as well. Hmm, there's an idea...

Thought I missed out on Backwoods this year. My Friday night shop had some surprises for me. He saved me a 4 Pack of Backwoods, Big Bad Baptist Release #40, and Barrel Aged Narwahl. Also picked up a sixer of Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. Was an expensive night but already well worth it.

Bottled 10/8/14. Glad I finally got some.
