Part of the journey that drew me to BA was a deep nostalgia for my grandfather. I remember sitting on his lap when I was a kid and asking him if I could smell his beer. It made me wonder recently, what beers did he like? What did he drink most often? What was his go-to beer? In talking with my dad a few weeks ago, he mentioned that my grandfather liked Ballantine until it floundered in the 1970s, then he switched to Miller High Life. In the final years of his life, he drank Miller Lite. My other grandpa always had a Rolling Rock in his hand, or sometimes Natty Boh. So I began to wonder, what did your grandparents drink? What beers did they love that don't exist anymore (or at least not in their original form)? What beers from their era do you wish would come back?

My Granpa was a Navy man, not a fan of beer, he drank rum and lots of it.

Schlitz, PBR, Budweiser, and Old Style. Needless to say he had no impact on what I now drink, however I do occasionally enjoy Schlitz or PBR from time to time.

My grandfather didn't drink beer, but he loved a good Whiskey and 7-Up

Neither grandfather drank beer. Both enjoyed their Scotch. But there wasn't much of a beer choice when most of our grandfathers were around so you had a better chance of guessing which one of the few they did enjoy.

Both grandpa's grew up in Sicily, immigrated to the US in the late 20s...one drank only homemade wine, the other was a bootlegger during prohibition, probably sampled the wares before delivering to the speakeasy's....Dad is about 90 years old, not much of a drinker, liked a cold beer (whatever was on sale) with pizza, or when grilling out, he did, however, mention a fondness for the "sweet beer" that he drank in Germany, during WWII

My grandfather – crap beer. Although my wife's grandfather lives in Rosenheim, Germany, and he's been drinking 1 Rothmooser Hefe-Weißbier a night (and no more than that) for as long as we can remember..

    Great discussion.

I am old enough that my GF was born in the 1800's. He would have come of age during WWI. I was fairly young when he passed away and never remember seeing him with a beer. I will change this one to my dad. In the 60'd and 70's he was a piels guy. That was probably the cheapest or near it at the time. I am a lot like my father.......he never met a beer he didn't like. He came of age during the depression so always gravitated to the cheap stuff. Some of my fondest memories of my dad was of us sharing a black and tan. When I came of age in the mid seventies there was very limited availability. We would share a 16 oz stroh's returnable mixed with a guinness. May just be the situation, but the first beers you share with your dad are special. What I would give to have one more.

While I never met him, my paternal grandfather was born and raised in Belgium, but it's likely too much to ask that he was a beer aficionado. He was apparently quite the rabble rouser, so I'm leaning towards whiskey and lots of it. My maternal grandfather was by my mother's accounts of his life, likely a blue collar drinker, so whatever was Budweiser equivalent that was available in Oklahoma after prohibition through the 60's.

My father drank Falstaff when I was a kid but then became a devoted Natty fan. I'll earn odd looks at bars I frequent because near Father's Day each year I'll get one can of it and take a few sips before I order from the craft selection.

    since you asked...
my grandfather was raised in Malta and therefore drank one beer, Farsons (Malta Export Brewing at the time). it would have most likely been "Cisk", a lager. the brewery was the product of a merger and the Cisk beer was released right around his teen years in 1928. in fact, a Maltese man drinking beer from 1928 through the war would have been drinking Farson and most likely Cisk. not a lot of choice on a small island of 300,000.

my first beers were while living in Berskshire County, UK. the very popular Courage brand, from nearby Reading, was a partner in the founding of Farsons. so there is a connection, though only mildly interesting to a beer nerd such as myself.

later after immigrating to America it was cheap beer in a can, Schmidts. he did not drink very much. Mediterranean culture was not so much about beer. that and those old world people lived through the war and rationing. beer just was not a priority.
    Cheers.

Michelob in a frosted mug. I have always associated that weird bottle shape with him.

my Mom's Dad was actually pretty ahead of his time beer wise, drinking imports (along with Miller High Life) in the sixties (he also brought the first Toyota I ever saw). My Dad's Dad drank Old Granddad.

As a kid, I remember my mom's father drinking Busch cans.

Wasn't until a short time ago that I found out the maiden name of one of his grandmothers was Busch.

Wonder if there was any connection there. Who knows?

My paternal grandfather died a few months after I was born, so I never knew him. What I do know about him is that he was religious, and I'll guess that he was not a drinker at all.

My maternal grandfather was a lover of Burger Beer. I think it was brewed in Cincinnati. (I liked in Ohio back then.)
