I apologize in advance if this thread is either needlessly crude and juvenile, or cliche, but I actively consider the raucous, gut-ripping belches to be an essential part of enjoying a beer.

And secondly, has anyone noticed flavors in a beer through belches that they hadn't noticed initially in the taste? For example, I had a Founders Dark Penance last night, and while the beer itself tasted primarily of citrus hops and toasted malts, I could clearly taste dark fruits in my burps.

If this thread is too immature or disgusting, feel free to delete it, but I felt the topic had to be raised. :grinning:

It isn't too immature. One BA chose bigbelcher as his avatar/screenname. I see these threads on wine forums all the time. yeah, respect beer.

Sadly, I do notice flavors in a burp that I did not smell or taste going down. For example, I am enjoying a COTU El Duderino at the moment. Bottle describes the white Russian stout with all the normal: lactose, vanilla, chocolate and espresso. I traded everything but vanilla really. Then I burped and bang! There is the vanilla.

I agree that the after burps can sometimes bring out new flavors that I missed while drinking it. I enjoy a tasty expelation of tasty gas. Beer burps should be discussed in BA reviews after appearance, smell, taste and whatnot. it's an important factor.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I will have to add, though, that high carbonation is not a positive thing in all beers. For example, I prefer little to no carbonation in imperial stouts that are already thick and heavy on the stomach. IPA burps, though? Yeah, I'm not ashamed to admit I enjoy that.

I like Hefe-Weizen burps, all morning long. Nothing wrong with that.

I see no shame in the burp. But never point it at people. Like a cough or sneeze, cover or at least turn away. I am not ashamed to admit my favorite is the "Euro pale lager" skunk. Yes, I lack social graces.

*burp* "Not bad manners, just good beer"!

Thoroughly enjoy the after-swig-belch, and completely agree that it is important and can bring out hidden notes.

Also get a kick out of the face my girl gives me, same face every time....A face of pure disgust. She knows it's uber-manly, secretly she's attracted to it. :grinning:

My girlfriend always says something, like "Excuse you..." whenever I burp, even when I attempt to hide it. I don't care, though. I'm still going to enjoy my belches. xD

I believe that the true / pure hop flavour / aroma is carried much better on the burp rather than when just drinking it - something to do with a burp (gaseous) also filling the nose. In any case, my SO can't bag me out for my beer burps - her Coke burps are worse

Next time your gf says "Excuse You!" when you burp, just employ my tried-and-true method - just reply with "I'm excused" and keep right on drinking.

Beer doesn't really make me burp too much. However, the room temperature Sprite the morning after sure does, and a lot at that. I just don't burp that much, unless there is a lot of excess carbonation or I drink something really fast.

Nothing screams "I am Man!" more than a nice beer belch. With that said, I notice more hop diversity on its way up than on its way down.

If I burp while my wife is around, I blow out the gas (like I'm blowing out a candle), then sniff/snort it.

I was once told by a friend, who has been drinking beer considerably longer than I have, to make sure to close my mouth at least on the first burp in order to capture and savor the flavors present in the gas that weren't in the glass.

I've heard in some countries/cultures that it's rude not to burp.

I hate when I drink too much and go to cut a loud belch and end up vomiting all over the floor. Especially after drinking imperial stout, that was a PAIN to get out of my carpet.
