I bought a Westbrook Teku glass today. I've always balked at Teku glasses because they seem to be rather expensive for glassware. As I sit here drinking my WnB stout in my new Westbrook Teku I am pondering what beers are appropriate for Teku glass and why are they so much more expensive than tulips?

It's a tulip, but with a sharper features so people know you aren't holding a girly wine glass, reducing shame-based off-flavors for the more insecure.

“As I sit here drinking my WnB stout in my new Westbrook Teku I am pondering what beers are appropriate for Teku glass and why are they so much more expensive than tulips?”

The purpose of the tulip-type shape is to concentrate the aromatics of the beer. It could be argued that any beer could benefit from this type of beer shape but classically the types of aromatic beers associated with a tulip-type shape are Belgian Ales. I would suggest that beers that have significant hop aroma would also be suited to this type of glass. Maybe Imperial Stouts would benefit from this tulip shape as well?

As to the specific question of “…why are they so much more expensive than tulips?” the only response I can think of because people are willing to pay that amount.

Ironically I was doing some wine and beer shopping at my local Total Wine & More earlier today. They have a pretty big selection of glassware there (for wine, beer and spirits). I actually wrote down on my shopping list “Teku glass?”. When I was in the store I didn’t even look for this glass, I thought to myself: I already have a number of Tulip chalices at home, why pay the money for a Teku.

I am sure that a Teku glass plays a useful role in beer appreciation but just too expensive for me.

    Cheers!

    From Truebeer.com

The Teku glass was developed by Teo Musso of the Baladin Brewery in Torino, Italy, and Italian sensory analyst Lerenzo Dabove (Kuaska). The design of the glass allows for a full sensory drinking experience by capturing and releasing a beer's aromas in the outward curve of the glass. This glass is one of the world's finest beer glasses ever created and is perfect for use with most craft beers.

I just don't dig the long stems. Smash 'em down more like a snifter and I'm all in.

I know @augiecarton swears by them. Maybe he can give some info here for us. I have one of their teku glasses and use it occasionally. I don't really see a big difference.

My understanding is that some beers would be less appropriate for the tulip shape primarily because of carbonation. It may work for a pilsner but a taller / narrower glass would probably be better, keep carbonation from subsiding too quickly.

That said, I use a tulip shape (same purpose as a Teku) or a wine glass for most beers other than lagers. If I'm feeling nitpicky I might do a goblet for some heftier Belgian beers that I find inclined to produce way too much head in a tulip and a snifter for heavy beers that I know aren't going to produce much head at all. Flatter beers in a tulip / teku just feel weird to me.

So I guess carbonation and head are what really guide my decisions.

Retain / focus carbonation > flute or some other tall / narrow glass.
Big beers with little carbonation > wine glass or snifter
Big beers inclined to go crazy with carbonation > wine glass or goblet
Everything else (billowing beers, IPAs, sours, more carbonated dark beers) > wine glass or tulip (which is where I'd put the Teku)

I have a Firestone Teku that I was excited about when I first got it, but now I rarely ever use it.

My standby is my Dogfish Head snifter. Perfectly shaped.

I could get down with a short-stemmed Teku though.

I pretty much drink everything from my Teku now. I admit it's mostly because it's trendy, but damn does it look awesome.

Though I do use a snifter for high abv beers and my Duvel tulip for anything that's really heavy on carbonation because of its capacity.

You might still be able to get them from B United with no logo for about $7 a pop plus shipping. Gotta order by phone though.
