So my package is still set to arrive today but the shipment to me was labeled as "Damaged - handling per shipper instructions". Now I have read many threads already discussing this, but I have some other questions. I ended up calling them and they asked me what was inside. I wasn't sure what to say so just said BBQ sauce. The lady ended up calling me and said I was unable to pick up the damaged package and that it will be heading back to California.

What do I ask of the trader?
Should I just wait it out and see what happens?
I am just worried I am out all this beer I sent and will end up getting nothing. Maybe it's too early to worry, who knows. I just hope the trader does right and helps resolve this with me.

UGH this is not what I wanted to happen during my FIRST trade ever. At least it wasn't my package, good beer karma for me!

Let yor trading partner know box is damaged and headed back their way. It is their responsibility to resend out everything from original trade.

What if the original sender doesnt have any more of what was damaged? Come someone enlighten me on the protocol there?

If the original sender can't replace what was damaged, the two parties try to work out something they can both agree on. That could be another package that the recipient values equally, paypal for the cost of the beer and shipping possibly if the other party is open to it...or, i've seen in some cases where no agreement can be reached, the other trader ships trader 1's beer back to them.

That's what I did. I will text him later. No need to wake him up now if he is sleeping.

That's what I hope did not happen. Hope the extras broke and not other stuff.

These are the options I see for that situation:
    1) Find more of the beers that were damaged.
    2) Negotiate with their trading partner to decide on suitable replacements.
    3) Return all the trading partner's beers. (This is why I won't open any beers I receive in trade until my box arrives safely.)

Edit: I use these options for the agreed-upon beers in a trade, not the extras. If an extra breaks, it's unfortunate, but I don't figure that any further action is necessary.

Yeah, I'm hoping for #1 as it was a huge want for me and the only reason i setup the trade - my partner is pushing for #2

That's always my first choice. I've never liked the idea of shipping something I can't replace.

What was the beer possibly lost that can't be replaced?

Well he does not have another on hand. And sounds like he's not willing to try to find one at least anytime soon. He basically told me he's busy from now until Christmas and won't be able to do any more trades to secure what he would have to get me.

That's not how this works. Either he didn't package your beer well enough, or some act of God caused damage to the bottle(s). Either way, it's his responsibility to work with you on this. If nothing else, he needs to ship your beers back to you and reimburse you for your shipping cost.

Well he got tired hand growlers so I hope he enjoyed them. And to be fair he is sorta working with me. He offered to reimburse me what I spent to buy them but I don't really want cash. I wanted the beers we agreed on.

Give him a break, take the money, and cut him loose. He's already lost his beers, even at his own fault, and doesn't have the same beer to ship to you and can't obviously return the growlers to you. You're out of TH growlers, not some rare or limited beers and some of your time. If you're understanding toward him, others may be also understanding in the future toward you, not to mention maybe once things settled, he and you can trade again and you may get even better beers.

I'd agree here, if he's willing to reimburse you for the beers and shipping, I would be OK with that if I was in your situation. You're not out any beers or money here...

Don't despair OP, the one time I've ever had this happen to me FedEx re-packed all of my beers in a new box and sent them back to me. Everything came back perfectly fine, except I guess one of the extra cans I had included had opened and made the box leak, because it was missing 1 Hop Drop can, that was it. Not sure how that happened, since they were bagged up, but it did.

I know that not every story turns out this lucky, but just saying it might end up not being a big deal at all.

Yeah I hope so! Thanks for the encouragement. Hopefully the worst part is my IPA's are just one week older.

I think this really depends on what was sent from you. You said TH growlers, so maybe those are like shelf beers (or semi-limited shelf beers) for you. In that case, him paying for beers and shipping turns the trade into a beer mule with shipping, nbd.
The downside is you can't really get feedback on BA because they didn't do anything that merits them getting feedback. I've done this for past traders to hook them up when I had to take a trade break.

However, if you had sent limited stuff or rare stuff like Paraguesia 2 and the guy was pushing for sending you money, that's something I wouldn't accept, unless he was a previous trade partner who you want to hook up with greatness. The right thing to do is for them to try to set up a box you value equally or near equally.

If it can't come to that, I think at minimum they need to send payment for the beer and shipping, AND a thank you for muling box. This is standard procedure. For example, almost every trustee I've talked to says that the person they trustee for sends them 1. funds for the beer; 2. a shipper for shipping the reserve beer back; 3. a return label; 4. Inside of that shipper are thank you beers!
A trade-gone-unlucky mule thank you box would vary from a trustee thank you box in that it should probably be better. But hopefully you can work out the details with the trader if he can't replace whatever broke.

And if anyone thinks I'm a hard-ass, great. I understand things sometimes break and if the bottle that broke wasn't one of the crown jewels of the trade, then asking for a replacement might be unnecessary. Stuff happens, most of us are on some sort of budget. But having a trade go from 'sending a rare beer for getting a desired target beer!' to 'sending a rare beer for whatever it cost' sucks. Good luck to everyone involved, and remember to bubble wrap it up!

I disagree. This was not a muling request from the start, you don't just force that on the other trader and triple up on their loss (loss of beer, money to the sent beer, thank you box + shipping cost of that box). That just harshly unreasonable. If that's your expectation, I hope you spell that out with every trade partner prior to their committing the trade with you because I guarantee you that very few people will trade with you.

As for the trustee service, all I can tell you is that I'm going to be a trustee for 6 people in the Tired Hands Believers Club. My #1 condition when I accepted to be each person's trustee was that the DON'T send me a "thank you" box. This is the same condition I place on every gopickmeup request/volunteer ever since I got into trading. I feel that my time and help are more valuable than any "thank you" box and can only be matched by the trader returning the favor if asked. Even this, I usually communicated, isn't mandatory. Because of this approach, I have so many partners around the country willing to send me beers, limited or otherwise, at cost and shipping label. That said, I DO send thank you box to my De Garde "mule" because he doesn't want any pickup for him in return, which I'm very happy to accommodate.
