Good NBS to all you, brethren of beer and prioresses of Pilsners. This is JMS1512 filling in last minute for Utopiajane.

It’s a sultry 50 degrees F here in NWNJ. The leaves are on the ground, the sun is out, and my very ugly pumpkin sits proudly on our doorstep.

We gather here today to talk about and sing the praises of a new beer. Tell us why you like it. Send us a picture, music, a story, all to enhance our wonderful tradition.

    My offering today:

    Brasserie Caracole’s Nostradamus

Poured hard into my Duvel snifter

Sight: Dark, dark brown with red hints. I see a colossal tan head that deflates like an underdone soufflé, resting at a finger-high head. Streams of tiny bubbles make their way up from the bottom of my glass. Lacing looks to be even bands with icicle-like fingers.

Smell: A tangy spice, malty sweetness, a bit of alcohol, but very little hop presence, if any. I’m not convinced I smell them in the bouquet. Do I smell the “Belgian yeast smell?”

Taste: The taste mimics the aroma, with a moderate dryness to it, and very little hop bitterness. I have not tasted one of these in a while, so I had to look up the BJCP guide to try and figure out what I tasted that I could not identify- I get almost a funky fruitiness to it, which must be the esters manifesting themselves in the taste. It definitely gets maltier as it warms.

Mouthfeel: It coats well, I’d say a medium-plus. It ends on the sweeter side, not the traditional dry finish, which makes me place this in the “Abbey” category, not the “Trappist.”

Overall: I nice post-dinner drink, especially if you, like me, have a 750 mL bottle of this to finish. I like it and its more popular cousins from time to time. In fact, it’s a pleasant alternative to trying to find a Westy, a Rochefort 10, or a St. Bernardus Abt 12.

Good morning, NBSers, and thanks to our host for the fill-in!

Today, I'm visiting a beer I picked up yesterday on a whim: Rotebraunsaueraltfranzösicheicheaufaventinusundschneiderweisseweizenbock

....errr, Schneider Aventinus Cuvee Barrique Weizenbock aged on French oak.

This is a delicious sour Weizenbock. It's as sour as a Flanders red-brown, or an American wild, but it retains the fruity, bready malt profile of a more traditional Weizenbock. It's truly quite remarkable; I have a feeling that this beer would average around 4.5 if it were put out by Russian River; as it is, it's quite a surprise profile coming from Schneider & Sohn.

    4.3 / +7.2% / Review #723

Fairly rare for me to get a +rDev these days. I think that's a combination of factors of how much I like this beer, and it possibly being underrated (I don't think people expect something this sour from a well-known German brewer).

    Cheers, NBSers!

Greetings fellow NBSers! A gray day here in the Fourth Corner. This week was a reminder as to why I moved out of a "Lake Effect" belt 14 years ago. Hang in there Buffalo, and stay safe!

I will be having New Beers on this NBS, but probably not posting them. It's my birthday, and I'm hosting a bottle share for about 35 folks. Brewers from at least 7 different breweries, sales reps from a couple more are coming, a bunch of my friends and myself have reached into our stash's, and it looks like the forecast calls for Beer!

I'll try to post an update later, but no promises. Cheers all, and have a fun NBS!

I just got home from running the 10 mile Turkey Trot. I decided to crack open a new beer to celebrate: Mountain Livin' Pale Ale by Crazy Mountain Brewing out of Edwards, Colorado.

We just got Crazy Mountain distributed to Kansas, so I'm excited to explore their lineup, although I've already had a few of their brews. Okay, let's check this beer out!

First of all, the can feels a little squishy when I press on it, as if it's not fully carbonated or something. It pours a nice light cooper color, and the head leaves a lot to be desired. It completely disappears half-way through drinking, and lacing is very light to say the least.

The aroma is pretty woody with notes of cedar and some spiciness coming through. The taste follows the aroma although I pick up some apricot fruitiness in the middle, while a nice hoppy, bitter grapefruit rind is there in the finish. The mouthfeel is a little watery.

Overall I'm a little disappointed. This beer just didn't seem fresh. Too watery. I rated it 3.09 but I'll revisit this beer later and adjust my review because I think this beer is better than what I'm experiencing right now.

    Good Sunday all.
Started his late morning with a fruity little number from Italy.
    Prunus from Birra DelBorgo
I found it refreshing and quite fruited, some more tartness and it would be a home run.

    look: 3.25 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Poured from bottle into a modified tulip glass.
A - Pale crimson, opaque rose color. Had to coax some light froth through aggressive pouring.
Gentle even lager like carbonation. Narre a hint of lacing.
S - Cherrie, with mint, light toast and some fusil notes. As time passed the nose migrates
to rose, hibiscus and spring fruit trees. Interesting.
T - Again the cherries and light malt are the bulk of this beer. Tart notes rise and quickly fall off.
Green grape skin comes walking through and leaves with the other fruit notes.
F - Very light in body, gentle carbonation cleans the top of the tongue, the fruits notes keep this a bit tart. Finishes with a little slickness.
O - The framework of a fruit beer, that doesn't offend. One could have this and then reach
for a nice Lambic for dessert.
    Worth trying for sure.

    Cheers all

Introducing Belgian Mare Hemlock Stout from New Hampshire. Brewed with New Hampshire grown hemlock tips. I have had spruce tip beers but this is my first hemlock. Same concept. Hemlock does not come out as vibrant in that pine aroma and flavor as spruce does. But the way it mingles with the dark roasted malts of this traditional stout makes it appealing. Only 4.6% ABV so you won't get drunk on one 22 ounce bottle of it. It is only sold in New Hampshire in 22 ounce bottles. And it can only be found in about 4 or 5 stores or at the brewery in Walpole, NH in the Western part of the state. The biggest disappointment with it was that it was very thin bodied.

It's listed as a one-off on BA, but was added last year in November. I wonder if it has become seasonal for Schneider & Sohn.

    Poured into matching Parageusia1 glass.

This brew pours a golden orange with a beautiful head that fades rather quick leaving lots of lacing. Probably would have lasted longer if I didn't have to pick out a couple bits of wax.

Smell is strong white wine, grape musk, funk, citrus, and barrel.

This tastes pretty impressive. Again at the forefront you get a lot of the wine and grape up front. Follows beautifully by the funk and citrus along with some tart cranberry and sour cherry.

This brew has fantastic carbonation and is very dry. Provides just the right amount of puckering you'd like in a sour.

Overall this is an exceptional beer. I tend to prefer fruited sours, but this is just an overall great brew.

What does our hero think, well read below...

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Poured from the bottle into a large snifter glass.

Deep chestnut brown out of the bottle, and filling with a classic dark walnut oily black body. Real nice mocha brown colored head, controlled to a finger, settling with a thin top and fairly bubbled collar. Not to slick on top, or shiny, pretty solid.

Excellent aroma even just pouring off the bottle. Hints of warm roast coffee, a hazelnut and dry wood like aroma, with splinter oak qualities also. Hints of dark brown bread crust, and a real oily bean and nutty quality, almost like macadamia nuts or something. Very impressive, and not hot at all on the nose either.

Palate is real diverse. Silky body, with a large huge coating. Hints of tight tiny carbonation, but with lots of berried fruit. Huge tobacco notes and roast finish, cigar whiffing and hints of hot smoke. Very diverse and complex mid palate, warm raspberry, leafy tobacco, oily roast charring and coffee bean. Oily sense continues but manages some silky quality on the aftertaste, with a big coffee burst, and even almost hop oil finish.

Slickness in a bottle, with a diverse and big palate. Surprisingly not too out of control, not totally balanced but not out of kilter either. Very impressive as well and one to take in nice and slow.

    look: 4 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5 | Final score: 4.48
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Nice that the weather has changed to cool and making it a good one for beers like this for a change. Somehow the high is supposed to be in the 70s tomorrow?

    I am not buying it.

But if so, it will make some easier drinking of those lighter beers in my arsenal ready to go.

To a New Beer on Sunday... It's just like every other day, but comes with an Sun and a Day at the end.

    Cheers!

Good afternoon and morning to everyone!
It's a 40 degree drizzly day. The deer were laying low and the woods were unpeopled on our morning hike with the hounds. I love these days. The quiet is truly a pleasure.
Wicked Weed has hit the beer scene with a flourish, with a great little brewery, restaurant, and now The Funkatorium. Asheville continues to churn out creative projects, beer and otherwise. Lusus Naturae is part of Wicked Weed's Terra Locale series and is Freak of Nature Double IPA finished with brett. Weighing in at 8.4% and made with local Riverbend malt and wet hops from Echo View Farms, this beer is highly aromatic- a beautiful floral elegance disguising a robust brew. A very soft mouth feel, very fresh malt and hops, and a slight presence of the "bug", but disguised at this point. How can I age a fresh IPA to allow the funk to grow? I cannot. This is a great beer with a prickly white pepperish acid/alcohol snap that gets one's attention. Another wonderful rendition from the very nice folks at Wicked Weed.
Three takes on a rock and roll classic. Happy Sunday all and take care.

Both were phenomenal, but a bit different. The wine is extremely present. I had a 2013 version of the Cuvee, but the 2014 sounds more intense; however, that might be due to its freshness.
