Did a group blind tasting of 20 different pumpkin beers this weekend, thought I'd share the results for anyone interested:

Interesting, but Schlafly Pumpkin Ale and Warlock aren't on the list, and are my number 1 and number 2, way ahead of Pumking. Still, a great comparative pumpkin tasting. Would have loved to be there!

Ditto on the Schlafly....over the last 5 years or so I'd consider it the most consistently great of them all. Interesting concept to age a pumking....I can't imagine it will help the overwhelming butterscotch which has plagued the last couple years.

No Williamsburg Alewerks of Schlafly!? I've had all of those, and those rankings aren't very surprising.

Schlafly Pumpkin Ale had to be a part of this taste test since its the best ever.

Never had it but always heard great things of Dogfish Punkin. And the Pumkings at the top don't surprise me.

Final thought: Jack-O from Curious Traveler is amazing.

Me too. I think DFH is overrated, but definitely not bottom of the barrel...while I would say Shipyard Pumpkinhead is down there. Really liked their Smashed Pumpkin though - that was one of my fav's this year.

Dog Fish Head Punkin Ale has been on a steady decline over the last couple years, becoming increasingly watery. I personally found this year's batch not at the bottom like that list shows, but definitely very low mid tier. My surprise this year was Sam Adams Harvest Pumpkin, this year blew last years mess away (my parents buy it, not me lol). Wish I had access to Cigar City or Schafly (ie., too poor to trade).

And Shipyard Pumpkin Ale upper mid tier? That is the worst Pumpkin Ale ever.

I haven't had Dog fish head in a couple of years and don't really care for pumpkin beers anymore but I used to love them and I would have rated them Pumpking, warlock, Dog Fish, Schlafly as the top ones I can get in KY.

Add me to the group of people that's wondering how/why you did this without including Schlafly. Must have been fun regardless.

Good lineup, but I agree with many others. If you are going to have any pumpkin ale tasting, Schlafly has to be a part of it. Although I atually like Stevens Point Whole Hog the most.

Also curious what order they were tasted and if this was a blind tasting? Those two things can make a huge difference on the results, especially with this many beers.

I also concur with including a Schlafly - best of the style I have had.

Is Pumking known to have bad batches? Bought a bottle for the first time in September, and it was just vile. I'll drink about anything without considering a drain pour, and I was very close to pouring the Pumking. It was soooo sickeningly sweet with some sort of an odd taste as well.

As much as I don't like the whole, last years was better statements around here, Punkin has definitely changed. It used to be one of my favorites because it was a decently flavorful brown ale underneath the spices while most pumpkin beers are flavorless ambers with spices added. Unfortunately it seems as though it has also gone the flavorless amber route over the last couple of years.

Last year it was bad, but not nasty. Just a far cry from 2012. This year I've had several but it's not the best batch. Better than last year but still decent. Had 2013 a couple weeks ago, it's better but still missing that 2012 goodness. Heard 2012 is really good now. Not sure what's up with them lately.

Love the list. Have you had rumpkin? That's my favorite.

This list is bogus without Schlafly. At least you got Good Gourd right...but Punkin lower than Blue Moon Harvest??? LOL.
